Also nose the glass from various angels.

Not sure if done on purpose or...

My memorial day treat. Got a bonded Old Grand Dad for Peachy Old-fashions to go with a gourmet burger and fries. Might as well give a review, too! (tasting notes inside) by zillah1985in bourbon

Yes. Muddle peach, simple syrup and bitters in glass. Top with ice. Pour over 2oz of bourbon. Stir. Then garnish with peach and cherry.

Sounds like a more extreme version of a brass monkey.

Old Grand Dad Bonded (100 Proof)

N: vanilla cornbread laced with carmelized apricots, citrus zest, fruit cake

T: spicy carmel at the front, oak mid palate followed by cornbread at the back end

F: clean and bright with lingering cinammon spiced cornbread

O: I only expected to use this in an old-fashioned (it makes an awesome old fashioned) but I am pretty sure I love this bourbon neat on its own. The cornbread note is pervasive, interesting, and delicious. Really easy finish makes this a fine sipping whiskey. Really looking foward to seeing what the 114 has to offer. This is a delicious whiskey perfect for mixing at its price but great to drink on its own.

R: Damn good

What is a good affordable Scotch? by DirtDog13in drunk

[–]zillah1985 1 point2 points ago

Dewar's! White label. Lol. I remember drinking that from my friends parents liquor cabinets back in high school and thinking I was classy as fuck.

EDIT: Actually, you could probably class it up and get the 12 year old for cheap too.

Good/affordable whisk(e)y that's not sweet? by ololcopterin whiskey

For a rye whiskey, try Rittenhouse Rye. Note: Spicy

For an Islay scotch, try Laphroaig 10 year. Note: Smoky

For a bourbon, try Knob Creek Small Batch. Note: Dry

Looking to buy my husband a bottle of bourbon. How do I know what's good? by WhatIsAGoodBourbonin bourbon

Sounds like your hubby likes a wheated bourbon. Maker's 46 should be easily available wherever you are.

Just finished my first week at an awesome new job, now I've got a three day weekend with the house all to myself. Some drinking will take place. by 5thWorlderin drunk

Glen Miller. Haha.

For drinking alone I would think a little bit of Duke Ellington should be in order.

Cheers!

What do you do when/if you drink alone? by Pozlain drunk

Play some games while I drink and then when I am sufficiently drunk, watch a shitty movie that I could not watch sober. Usually a crappy creature feature. Love me a crappy creature feature.

Barrel-Strength Bourbon – Awesome fire in the belly or overpriced hooch? by bourbonbanterin bourbon

[–]zillah1985 0 points1 point ago

I was just thinking of this. I lurk around r/scotch quite a bit. It seems that there is a huge hatred of blended malts there rather than single malts. Given the way the scotch market has exploded, I figure that single malts are popular for a reason.

I love scotch but I also like keeping my money. So when I realized that bourbon had similar flavor profiles to my favorite scotches, I realized that I could get something that was a half or 2/3 cheaper and in some cases...superior. Much chagrin to that of the master distiller. But I was changed. Turns out I love blended and small batch whiskey's. Sure, you don't get much individual character of a particular barrel, but you get consistency. Blending is just as much an art as selecting a barrel for release. So I wonder, why the hate for blended whiskey? IMO, the comparison between blended bourbon and single barrel bourbon is really the price. While they do taste different, and may offer a little bit more proof, I don't exactly see how they can be justified. In fact, if I was going to spend scotch prices on a single barrel bourbon, I might as well spend that money on a scotch.

To me, it seems, that the single barrel whiskey movement was a direct cause of the niche single malt market and their hate for blended whiskey's and bourbon distilleries are trying their best to capture that market. But to me, bourbon just doesn't (no, shouldn't) work that way. I don't want the single barrels to disappear, of course - I see them as a treat like any other...could I be wrong? I would definitely like to see single barrel bourbons much cheaper.
