TROPHY CASE

Hey /r/maine I have to prepare a "northern maine accent" for a role, if you could help that would be great. by needamainerin Maine

[–]xach 2 points3 points ago

I can't help, sorry.

The best Maine accents I've heard in a movie is in Dolores Claiborne. It wasn't perfect all around, but John C. Reilly talked exactly like my Nth-generation neighbor, and David Strathairn was pretty great too.

That was a Downeast accent, though, and I'd bet the Aroostook accent differs a bit.

Good luck!

Lodging Recommendations- Honeymoon Trip by lawnygnomyin Maine

I don't cab around in Portland, but it's such a small place that I don't think you'll see much of a difference between something right near the train station and something across town.

Also, I've heard it's worth the extra $8 (if you buy in advance) per ticket to upgrade the Downeaster from Coach to Business.

The transportation center is in the middle of a no-man's land as far as walking around goes. The only thing I can think of that is in walking distance is the Inn at St John, which I've heard good things about, but I've never been there myself. But if you have any luggage at all you'll still need a cab to get over there.

For Valentine's Day my wife and I went to the Portland Harbor Hotel downtown. The rooms are pretty nice, the staff was very nice, there's a low key classy bar with a great menu during the day (Eve's at the Garden). It's in the Old Port so you can walk everywhere and not be far from a home base.

How touristy is Old Orchard Beach? by MyNameIsBruce2in Maine

[–]xach 10 points11 points ago

How wet is the ocean?

edit I haven't been to OOB a lot, but my impression isn't great. It's not just that it's touristy. A lot of places in Maine get touristy. It's more that the tourists in OOB seem to like things tacky and loud and gaudy. They seem to like getting drunk and/or stoned and to fight. I have a few friends who work in emergency services in Southern Maine (ER nurses, paramedics, cops) and the horror stories of out of control OOB-ers are many. And in the height of the summer OOB is jam packed to the gills with people.

There are probably good things to do in OOB but I haven't had the good fortune to find any of them yet, and I'm not all that motivated to go back to look.

Sorry to hear a Montreal trip fell through. I've only been once, but I had a friendly local showing me around and it was a lot of fun. Lots of stuff to see and do.

Planning a mini-tour of Maine in late June or July, question about lodging. by simonmitchell13in Maine

I don't know what it's like now, but a few years ago I tried to book a room in Bangor on short notice and there was absolutely nothing available. After the fourth "sorry, we don't have anything" I asked the desk guy if there was a convention in town or something, and he said there had been a few hotel closings and there just weren't a lot of rooms to go around.

Who has the best wings? I tried to do a survey a few years ago but kept losing track.

Great Lost Bear had the largest wings I had in Portland. I think Beale Street had the tastiest but maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I used to eat at Norm's and they had great fried chicken but the BBQ was average. I'll have to try East Ender sometime.

From the review it sounds like they have the real thing, though.

I like Buck's, but I kinda wish they hadn't moved out of their little shack. The new place has way more space but it lost some of the character.

People drive all kinds of cars in Maine. I drove a 2002 Saturn SL for many years. It sucked in the snow, but I avoided trouble with two rules:

  • Stay off the road when it's truly awful out
  • If driving can't be avoided, drive slow and take it easy

A question for all you Maine-ahs by Jimmybucksin Maine

I buy a pass ($70) and go a lot.

If you know of another sandy freshwater beach that's as clean and well-maintained and free, I'd love to know about it. $70 for a summer's worth of a great beach feels like a bargain to me.

They are in separate files; what differs is whether an object describing the file (and under what conditions it is built) is available as part of the system definition object.

This is handy if you're writing, say, an archive operation, where you really want to include all files, not just the files that are built under your particular *features* set.

I don't know what else Nikodemus has in mind, but that alone makes it pretty useful.

Swimming at Tassel Top in Raymond. Fills up fast, unfortunately. I haven't found a good backup freshwater beach yet.

I don't smoke pipes, but I go to Calabash for a cigar from time to time, and I think they also sell tobacco.

Roque Bluffs is cool (as mentioned a few times). I also like checking out Jasper Beach, which isn't far away from it. Cool pebble beach and lots of places to explore.

Anyone ever do urban exploration in Portland? by ZaphodbBroxin Maine

[–]xach 1 point2 points ago

It's a long-ish trip, but Fort Knox in Bucksport is pretty cool if you're into forts. I went with two kids last month, when it was officially closed, and we explored some parts of the fort that were accessible. There were some scary dark staircases and dank tunnels and weird storage areas and stuff like that. And it's huge. I haven't actually been when it's officially open, so there might be even more to explore. Bring a flashlight.

Anyone know where I can find a 6-pack of Hoegaarden around Portland? by Skrooblesin Maine

Hannaford used to have it. I haven't checked lately though. Allagash makes better Belgian-style and it's local.
