TROPHY CASE

Fiber-to-the-door in Maine? by neuromonkeyin Maine

[–]xach 2 points3 points ago

My understanding is that the last time it was tried in Maine at the residential level it was a financial failure, and that has prompted reluctance by investors to finance another shot at it.

I think it's a great idea and I would love to get it too but it's a very, very capital-intensive process and you have to persuade conservative, risk-averse bankers to pony up the money for it.

My girlfriend and I are New Brunswickers that love Maine, we're thinking of heading out your way for valentines. What should we do? by dassoukiin Maine

You can't cross anywhere in Maine!

I ask because a friend of mine runs the pizza place at the end of Main Street in Calais, just up the hill from the border crossing, and the pizza is pretty good.

Hello fellows. Possibly moving from Phoenix. by ryandailyin Maine

It depends on how much wilderness you want. There's some in town, like the Baxter Woods or Evergreen Cemetery or the other numerous trails & parks, or if you drive a bit out of town you can be at a few different state parks, or if you drive for a few hours you can be, quite literally, in the middle of nowhere. You can get as wild as you want.

Portland gets the gamut of seasons. It can get hot & muggy in the summer and frigid and snowy in the winter. This winter has been pretty mild, but in winters past there has been snowstorm after snowstorm and that can get kinda old after a while, though if you gear up for winter recreation (skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, etc) it can be nice.

There are a lot of venues in Portland for local musicians to perform. As far as I can tell there is not a lot of money or a lot of career advancement involved. It seems to me like a strictly-day-job-having activity.

I don't know if it's still the case, but years ago I was always impressed by the music & art scenes around the UMaine campuses at Machias and Farmington. Lots of students really into interesting things and a few key music & art faculty shepherding a lot of interesting stuff. Either one might be a cheaper option if you don't care about the amenities of a city like Portland.

You can always contact them and ask them for different terms. Maybe you can negotiate something that works better for you.

Any Eastport/Calais area redditors on here? by machinedramonin Maine

[–]xach 1 point2 points ago

It helps to get in with folks that have the gear. I never had a boat or snowmobile or fourwheeler when I was younger but I knew a lot of people who did and who were nice enough to take me along.

The lighthouse at West Quoddy is nice. I always had fun going over to Campobello but I don't know what it's like these days. There are trails in Cutler. There's the Devil's Head trail in Calais. Jasper Beach in Machias is cool. Lots of places to just walk around and soak up some nature. (But bring bug dope.)

And if that stuff appeals to you but you don't know anyone to do it with, try the nearest Rod & Gun club and see how it goes.

edit: There are also a number of snowmobile and fourwheeler clubs that maintain trails and things like that.

Snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, off-roading, target shooting, basketball, sightseeing. Lots of stuff to do if you like to go outside in the woods or on a lake or on a trail.

Video games and Internet, too, though you can do that pretty much anywhere. Good luck if your Internet connection sucks.

Has anyone used DRAKMA? Does anyone have any reservations on utilizing it, or know of any limitations it has? by crowfeatherin lisp

[–]xach 2 points3 points ago

I use Drakma as substrate for a lot of projects, have never had a problem.

I think there's room for more than one HTTP client library, but Drakma is good enough to kill my urge to write one.

There's value in demonstrating the suppliedp lambda list feature, but in this case, a NIL is just as tasteless as a missing else clause. (if foo 42 nil) should just be (when foo 42).

Clozure CL or SBCL for personal project? by Stubbin lisp

[–]xach 9 points10 points ago

It's important, but I don't know about very important. As a library developer, I work hard to make sure my projects work on all implementations. I'd rather see diversity encouraged where it makes sense and let the bug reports (and fixes) flow.

Clozure CL or SBCL for personal project? by Stubbin lisp

[–]xach 18 points19 points ago

Both are pretty great.

They differ in ways that might not matter to you much just yet.

ClozureCL is the open-source product of a company that pays a few people to work on the project. SBCL is a volunteer effort; key contributors come and go, with varying degrees of availability at any particular time.

SBCL produces faster compiled code. The compiled code speed matters to me, because I produce thousands of PNGs per day, but it might not matter to you.

Clozure CL has a faster compiler. The compiler speed made a difference to ITA, where there are very large CL codebases, but it might not matter to you.

I checked Quicklisp usage logs, and 65% of downloads were via SBCL, 18% were via ClozureCL. Everything else was 10% or less.
