IAMA vegan- why the hate? AMA by acidpHarmin IAmA

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty cool what you did for your Dad.

On hostility toward vegans, I can guess it might be similar to the reaction of one friend when I went teetotal. He was actually deeply pissed-off and somehow took it as a personal affront. And, this went on for a good year with hostile remarks etc. It didn't seem to bother anyone else - if they notice (I don't announce it or anything). Hell, over at my place, I'm more than happy to serve them booze - I just don't partake anymore.

Do you have a physician, trainer, nutritionist or coach who advises you on your diet?

What do you typically eat in a day?

Good luck!

I think the biggest pain will be the rinsing and wringing/drying of your clothes.

Another thing if you don't have a dryer - I noticed that clothes sometimes get skunky due to mold or something like that if they've been line-dried. A lot of times, I think it's because the inner drum of the washing machine gets filled with gunk (something you won't have to worry about). Depending on the situation, you can often cure it by zapping your laundry with chlorine bleach, vinegar and/or baking soda; there are also commercial remedies available as it's a common problem in Japan due to the humidity etc.

How did you convert your father? Did you use any particular program? Did you make him go cold turkey or did you implement a weaning process? Any vegan products that you wouldn't normally consume that you got for him (for example, meat substitute products)? Am sincerely interested.

I quit booze for my health but it was one of the hardest things (psychologically) I had to do. It made a huge difference in my own health but I'd be hard-pressed to recommend it others (unless they were all-out alcoholics or something).

I don't want to sound like a party-pooper - but if part of your plan involves humiliating the guy by posting a video of him online, you really want to re-think the consequences if he decided to sue or complain to college authorities. A decade or two ago, this would never have been an issue but the whole environment in the workplace (and college) has been getting more and more anally-retentive. I am also thinking of the recent case involving Dharun Ravi and the suicide of his roommate Tyler Clementi.

When I was there (Paris) a few years ago around June/July, I only stayed less than a week before heading up to Switzerland.

Looking for some info on cockroach solutions! by shizu_murasakiin japanlife

Here is something you can use that is practical, low toxicity to humans and pets, and not too difficult to use.

First, (and this is the most difficult part) you need to get your hands on some boric acid. The Japanese for it is: ホウ酸. You can find it in a drugstore which looks like this. Or, you might be able to find a large plastic cannister of it especially for use as an insecticide in both drugstores and DIY stores which looks like this (around Y600 at most).

Second, read how to effectively use boric acid. This is decent. In some cases, you are trying to get it into the various hiding places like cracks and crevices. In other cases, if you live in a house where they are coming in from the outside, the powder is cheap and plentiful enough to create a white perimeter defence around your home.

Third, learn how to make effective cockroach bait using boric acid powder. This "recipe" from Hawaii:

"We make a mixture of 1/3 boric acid, 1/3 cornmeal and 1/3 granular white sugar.

"Then we take a tin can and put two or three holes in the sides at the base of the can. Next, we put a tablespoon of the mixture into the can and cover the top with a piece of aluminum foil.

"We put these everywhere that the cockroaches are, but out of the way of pets and children.

"This mixture never goes bad and works very well for us. I find dead cockroaches nearly every day in our house using cans that contain mixtures that are 10-15 years old."

Boric acid is "hosan" in Japanese and cornmeal is "kohnmiiru."

There is no particular time of the year that Asian cockroaches produce eggs, and females can sometimes be seen carrying egg capsules that contain around 40 eggs.

The females drop the capsule before the young hatch. Development from eggs to adults takes three to four months, and cockroaches can live up to a year. Females can produce up to eight egg cases in a lifetime -- that can mean 300-400 offspring!

What's the summer like from mid-July? I heard many Parisians leave for holidays so there are a lot more foreigners in town. (My friend indicated he prefers it that way as he claims the latter are generally more friendly.)

Since you indicated that you are 23 years old (and if you live in the US), then you just missed the time (before 1990) when McDonald's fries used to be cooked in beef tallow.

However, even though those fries are now cooked in 100% vegetable oil, they still have added a healthy dose of "natural flavor" for the "beefy" taste.

The flavor and/or aroma that you crave in McDonald's fries are likely the beef extracts - not those of potatoes per se.

Have standards slipped since you left? Why does it appear to be relatively easy to spot both NOCs and official cover officers? The former often claim they are State Dept but of course, none of their colleagues seem to know who they are. And, NOCs - especially at some of the relatively new sponsors like Goldman Sachs - stick out like a sore thumb.

And, plenty of those in training in the 90's would talk on the trains after language training in Rosslyn; and they were bad at lying too - claiming they were training at FSI for State Dept but forgetting that it was in Ballston. Three of these guys in a row were all Air Force Academy bozos - one pleaded not to tell. Maybe something in the water?

The most interesting NOC I heard of (after he had passed) and was your generation worked under the cover of a French news agency (who obviously had no clue) and was of Asian descent and a naturalized American.

what NOT to do in Japan? where NOT to go in Japan? by rico_bonsaiin japan

[–]wolframite 0 points1 point ago

There actually is a reason why certain items at McDonald's Japan really do taste better. Specifically, the french fries. Japan is still one of the few countries that uses beef tallow and not vegetable oil with beef-flavored seasoning. (If you're one of those observant Hindus and recently ate fries at McDonald's Japan, you had better get the River Ganjes to purify yourself or you are going to Hell.)

The beef for McDonald's Japan is currently all sourced from Australia. While some might argue the holdout over beef tallow (Japanese domestic sources) is due to superior taste, another more cynical school of thought argues that this is a concession to the burakumin-dominated meat processing & distribution industry in Japan.

Few want to mess with the burakumin who enjoy the advantage of being hardly ever referred to in the press. They are the "caste whose name shall not be uttered", and in many cases where they are causing trouble, it is the yakuza who take the blame.

The founder of McDonald's Japan once angered the burakumin when he decided that he would experiment with vertical integration and set out to breed cattle in Okinawa. According to informed accounts from McDonald's Japan insiders, Fujita immediately required bodyguards for the period he unsucessfully tried to get his cattle operations off the ground. The Eta are pretty ruthless.

On ethnic Koreans in Japan: actually this belief that the majority of them were forcibly brought over as slave labor is a myth that Chosen Soren in particular likes to propagate to gullible foreign press.

The majority of ethnic Koreans came to Japan voluntarily. Compared to the conditions on the Korean Pennisula, the perceived economic opportunities in Japan were considered more attractive. And, for quite a few, this calculated risk turned out to be for the better.

For example, Pro-Wrestler Riki Dozan aka Kim Sin Rak, Karate Master Mas Oyama aka Choi Young-Eui, Yakuza Boss Hisayuki Machii aka Jeong-Geon Yeong, LOTTE founder Takeo Shigemitsu aka Shin Jyuk Ho ... all came voluntarily to Japan to seek or make their fortune.
