TIL in WWII, J.F.K. saved a man - after their boat was sunk - by swimming three miles to a nearby island, all while towing the man by his life-preserver's strap...with his teeth. by riedmaein todayilearned

ok, deep breaths one and all. let's try this again.

LBJ spent most of the war in 'active service' - he volunteered and had himself proclaimed a hero.

of those several years, less than a week was spent doing any active service. it was spent using political connections to avoid doing anything other than wearing a uniform. a lot of it seems to have been connected with sunbathing in the south pacific.

when he stumbled into the front line, he had himself awarded a silver star by MacArthur for getting shot at.

in short, he dishonoured the idea of service to your country, what medals should stand for, etc etc.

and then he spent the next 10 years boasting about the number of raids he flew, Japanese pilots he personally shot down, and whatever else took his fancy.

so yes, people who serve their country during war are doing good -a whole lot of it, whether they kill people or not. lbj wasn't doing that, he was using the uniform to hide his lack of service. thanks all the same for your interest.

he was a passenger, and it's not like he was shooting back.

that said, he was at least wearing uniform, so perhaps it counts in some very abstract way.

he saw active service once, by mistake, when a plane he was in flying to the Philippines, was nearly shot at.

Regular Chrome user... except for The Daily Show website, which I can only convince to think I'm in the US when using Firefox.

Excluding the anticipated strength of the Obama campaign in 2012, to what factors would you attribute the lack of electable & strong candidates in the 2012 GOP primary race?

Given your concerns about the direction of the Republican Party, who would you most like to see Romney choose as his VP?

Don't know if OP meant to do this, but when you zoom out, the colours begin to take the form of a double helix... If you squint at it, that is.

It's a weird position for an uncle to be in, and I couldn't imagine teenage me having been glad to have had that conversation with my uncle (or indeed my parents), but I think most of reddit here is missing the point. Her parents weren't the ones who found out. They aren't part of that part of her life. Every family is different, and in this family both a son and a daughter have ended up talking to their uncle about porn. You can think that's weird, but that's where we're at.

Given where we're at, I don't think the father would be pissed that the porn conversation happened. Keeping a secret that the daughter's done something potentially illegal, maybe. But then again with perspective the father could very easily be glad that he got to skip what must have been an incredibly awkward conversation.

TL;DR: Some Dads aren't that much in parts of kid's lives and uncles can appropriately step in.

you know, let's say this was some other illegal behaviour. say shop-lifting. i was say it's excusable for the uncle not to tell the parents about that, if he's certain she knows it was a bad thing to do, wouldn't do it again, etc. and whilst she's the wrong side of the child/adult line in terms of age/consent/sex issues, when you look at actually parenting a person and letting them increasingly make their own decisions over time you do find that kids need more latitude to make mistakes as they grow up.

nah. that wont' work for websites - she can use another computer briefly to compile a list of links, post it + passwords to a new google account. key logger would only see a series of Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V combinations.
