I have just begun writing in earnest. I am not as good a writer as I thought I was. How bad are your first drafts? by luckykoboldin writing

I write the same way, it's encouraging to see I'm not the only one. But I also spend so much time figuring out a passage before I attempt to write it - I use a detailed outline, I visualize the entire flow of a passage, figure out the purpose and why readers will be engaged with that passage, etc.

Something of a TL;DR: "Locating the bases of emotion at least partly in the brain’s seat of reason has several practical implications. None is more intriguing than this: it is possible to transform your Emotional Style through systematic mental practice."

Those numbers for your children's book are really encouraging. I'd love to write children's stories but never imagined there was an e-market for them. Can I ask for a link to your book to see what a successful kid's book looks like?

How should I respond when JW comes to my home? Is there anything I can do to be helpful to them? by whiskey-priestin exjw

[–]whiskey-priest[S] 0 points1 point ago

I would try to show them where their organization is heading.

How would this help them? Do you mean they would question their religion if they saw that it was small and shrinking, or did I miss your point entirely?

I'de like to ultimately show them that mine is a compassionate and harmonious way of life and that if they are going to reach the rest of the world they should hold their system to a higher standard/see where improvements can be made.

I like your thought of showing them something positive to aspire to. I'd rather have my conversations with them be about calling them to come into something good instead of just being about criticizing what is wrong with them. What would this better way look like more specifically? - Your statement makes it seem like you might still be JW, but some kind of reformed one. Or maybe there is a more practical and rational religion that JW's would be attracted to?

Thanks for the info. I looked up the "Criticism of JW" page on wikipedia, there's so much stuff there to work through, so it's good to have a place to focus in on.

I thought I knew most of what religion had to offer, but JW seems to go beyond what I thought religion was capable of in modern society.

It's tragic that people are shunned from their family b/c of their pursuit of knowledge. It simultaneously makes me want to fervently oppose their religion b/c stuff like that is so wrong, but it also makes me wary of doing so b/c I'd hate to contribute to the disruption of families.

I suppose I would want to know the truth even if my loved ones rejected me for it, so I guess I should continue to press them as long as they are willing to keep coming.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your piece is a beautiful tribute. Can I ask how digital painting works: do you start by altering a digital photo, or do you have to recreate the entire image yourself? I ask b/c I have some poor photos of my deceased dad and brother, and I'd love to see those images recreated similar to your painting. Also, can I ask how long it took you to learn the process and complete this picture?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I too lost my brother to suicide. The most helpful thing for me was getting into a support group for suicide survivor's - it provides a room full of people who can understand what you are going through, when perhaps no one else can sympathize in quite the same way. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk about anything.

It sounds like you could use a friendly ear, try posting this comment in r/depression or r/suicidewatch. Best of luck to you.
