My fucking stupid 18 year old son racked up $15K in credit card debt. Now the wife and I are arguing over it. What to do? by MySonIsFuckingStupidin AskReddit

[–]weegee 0 points1 point ago

when I was 19-20 while at college, I racked up $5000 in credit card debt. when I came home from college, my father helped me pay it off by:

  1. Having me hand over all my income from my full time landscaping job to him.

  2. He helped me create an Excel spreadsheet with all the accounts I had and the balance of each one.

  3. With each paycheck, these accounts would be paid down.

  4. He would allow me to buy gas for my car commute to work and back, but nothing more. If I wanted to go anywhere else, I had to ride my bike or walk.

After 6 months I was debt free.

I would highly recommend you make your son pay it off in the same manner. There is no other way around it.

If you pay it off for him, he doesn't learn anything, and the behavior will continue.

Hey, r/guitarlessons, what's the best book for absolute beginners? by iDork622in guitarlessons

Last night at Half Price Books (they have a 20% off everything sale this weekend) I got the book "Essential Guitar Chords - The Easy-To-Use Guide" for $5. 383 pages and over 350 chords. Spiral bound. Should be a good one.

Almost One-Fourth of US Suicide Victims Drunk at Time of Death by narrowayin science

all of them probably on some other drug. and many are probably accidents, not suicides. just because someone dies when ingesting too much medication or mixed medication doesn't mean it is a suicide.

what kind of a fucking pointless study is this??

Certainly I am speaking of the NA Subaru image, not the rest of the world.

AWD differentiates Subaru from all other Asian marks. Without it, it fails miserably due to the boxer engine, which is inherently inferior in design and performance (hp per litre displacement) to the more common straight-4 engines. So to produce a non-AWD car dilutes the brand value of Subaru. I predict this BRZ will sell below target and be a money loser for both Toyota and Subaru in the long run. It is the modern Fiero.

Without AWD it's not a Subaru, which has been 100% AWD since 1997.

High winds lift the nose of a parked 747 by commentor2in aviation

[–]weegee 1 point2 points ago

no, those are long retired from passenger service. a few survive, but only one or two are still in flying condition, used by the uber-rich or governments. Iran Air had one in service until recently.

yep. dash 400's around the globe are nearing the end of their useful passenger carrying life. really sad as they are fantastic airplanes. did in by the success of the 777. I am very glad to have flown roundtrip SEA-LHR back in 2008 aboard an 18 year old BA 747-400. Fantastic airplane to travel in. Real roomy, and a real smooth ride too.

TIL Lake Oswego city council has voted to ban the public from entering their lake, and is considering selling their lakefront parks to a corporation. by oregone1in Portland

[–]weegee -1 points0 points ago

yep, and perhaps in the future, the interstate freeway system will be sold off piecemeal to corporations, who will charge a "per use" fee to use them. same with public parks, national parks, etc. All will be owned by corporations.

Republicans hate the idea of public ownership, they think that is Socialism (they hate Amtrak, National Public Radio, Public Television, the National Endowment for the Humanities, etc), which is what Communism was a generation ago. They think that making a profit is better than providing something paid for by all to be enjoyed by all.

Get a good look at how things are today, because 100 years from now, it's all going to be used by people who can afford it, and those who can't, well, "go fuck yourselves", right?

The Emergence of the Fix-It Society--I would love to see this catch on by minerva_qwin Frugal

Years ago I bought a toaster. A $60 Kitchen Aid, bought at Target. My previous toaster had worked perfectly for 8 years, and it wasn't available anymore so I bought this one. Thought I was doing the right thing buying a good quality toaster that would hopefully last another 8 years. 13 months after I bought it, it failed. Took it to a small appliance repair place where the guy explained to me that it was built so as to not be repaired. Once it failed, it was junk. Indeed, there was no way to disassemble it at all, and no parts were available. He happily pointed out to me, a $225 toaster that was built so it could be repaired, but I didn't think spending that kind of money on a toaster made sense (I've since learned about the Sunbeam toasters that work almost forever, and can be found at garage sales for $5-10).

So I bought a $25 Toastmaster at Target and it's worked now for almost 7 years. Cool. Will replace it with the vintage Sunbeam (after I clean all the dead bugs and dust out of it from long term storage) when it breaks.

I love being able to repair stuff. I'm in IT and we repair computers all the time. Swap out parts, sometimes even solder on a new component if it means saving a few hundred bucks from having to buy a new board for the server.

This disposable society we live in is pretty sad. I feel terrible throwing so much stuff into a landfill that should be repairable.
