Condescending Wonka - Oh Delhi too much heat you say... by 18Lamain india

[–]wanderingmind 1 point2 points ago

Oh Wonka funny line you say? The rest of the memes must be looking at you in awe.

See, just saying "Oh really?" is not a joke.

I woke up late. "Oh really?" Its been raining. "Oh really? I upvoted this. "Oh really?" Nights are dark. "Oh really?"

Does not work.

We have plotted and killed people, admits CPM leader | Firstpost by rahulthewallin india

[–]wanderingmind 0 points1 point ago

Every CPM cadre knows this, regular people in Kerala and West bengal know it too. Openly admitting it probably means a lapse of judgement.

You do not join CPM cadre and expect to have a life of non violence.

I wish a few more would get carried away and admit the same.

r/india does not praise SRK. Are you mad?

So metros are becoming too crowded, with un-affordable (housing) and high living costs. What's a good smaller city to plan to be in, after around 5-8 years? by LordSnugglywiggumsin india

[–]wanderingmind 0 points1 point ago

Why not Shimla? I know the city proper is quite crowded, but step a kilometer out and its empty. Or has it changed? It has an airport, decent internet.. but I think there are serious problems buying land there.

Anyone from there with some insight?

Hey BJP, if the fuel prices shouldn't be as high as you think, you rule the state (with an absolute majority) where petrol prices are the highest in continental India. Why not do something about it, like lifting the 25% VAT, rather than calling for a Bandh? by strayadvicein india

[–]wanderingmind 0 points1 point ago

What I don't get is, why you're trying to make this about the Gujarat riots.

Just the political reality. Congress' USP is perceived minority stand, MNREGA, other social security legislation etc. BJP's USP is its perceived 'victory'. No bigger point.

Regardless of whether Team Anna's statements are a 100% right or wrong, Corruption at high places is a real issue in India. by nobribein india

[–]wanderingmind 2 points3 points ago

No doubt about it. There is only a question mark on the motives of Team Anna - the general idea they communicate is quite valid.

You call BJP out for hypocrisy? That's not gonna work. It is the standard in politics, and they just follow the system.

Seriously, no state government - or central government - can politically afford not to tax. Goa? They have increased taxes on a lot of other stuff to balance it out. Why? The petrol consumers are a vocal lot, and the needs of that vocal lot can influence the overall mood against the government. Positively, in Goa. And negatively, across India.

Reddit, or India, can't seem to agree on a system that will work on all circumstances. So one day, we are for capitalist free economy, and another, we are for government interfering in favour of the poor.

Also point to note. Delhi I think has the largest number of private 4 wheelers - and it is still only 12 % of the population. Add two-wheelers, and it goes up to 33 % approx. The rest, travel by public transport. The petrol price hike does not affect them easily, while a diesel hike will. They are already relatively less well-off.

Now, you can theoretically say we can fix all this by getting rid of MNREGA and subsidies in everything and fiscal discipline and all. But Congress has its MNREGA and Food security bill, BJP has its Gujarat riots and development afterwards. Without MNREGA and other stuff, Congress will easily fall before BJP which can proudly show its achievements in communal polarisation and development!

This thread explains a lot about r/india actually.

Username: the_unforgiven1 cares about kundli in 2012.

Rich Delhi Boy?

Seriously, why would she check if the kundlis would match if she did not believe in it? I can't blame your mother at all. She believes in some stuff, and acts on it. Therefore shaadi nahi ho sakti.

You, on the other hand, has a username the_unforgiven1 (I am guessing thats Metallica) and bothers about what people who bother about kundli think, or believe that their opinion is worth going wtf about.

Seriously, what ARE your convictions?

If you do not care about kundlis and such, say it and act on it.

Oh man. A very eloquent paragraph there, undone by the last line. I was poised to upvote when I saw that.

Now you know why some of us go over to the dark side. That last line.

That's interesting - 11 downvotes. Even assuming normal Reddit auto downvote fakery (which I have not seen on threads which no one has a problem with) it says something!

'Middle class ghettos' spreading in India: On the outskirts of Delhi, Gurgaon is archetypal of the new middle class ghettos sprouting all over the country: a disorganized gated community of luxury condos, shopping malls and golf courses missing basic infrastructure and public spaces. by marcussantiagoin india

Delhi proper itself is extremely unsafe compared to places with people out on the streets.

Gurgaon is just taking it to another level.

Have you lived in Bombay? You need to spend a month there, and then you know what the protection of the crowd means. Very difficult to understand otherwise. I am quite comfortable in Delhi or Gurgaon, but I have lived in Bombay - and the difference is very easy to sense. It comes from the people out on the street. In Gurgaon, after dark, I rarely see people walking on the street - say not even 1 % of what you see anywhere in Mumbai if you go off the main roads in any direction. Apartments are islands, with just a cigarette shop or two outside. The loneliness if you walk on the street is weird. It is a car-to-mall city like Dubai - which is precisely what this article says.

Bombay too has gated communities, but much fewer. Even then, the difference is that Bombay (or most of Delhi) has a street life. In Gurgaon, life is inside the gate - there is almost nothing outside. when life gets inside the gates, criminals take over the streets. This is standard practice.

In Bombay where I would stay, there would be families out walking with their kids at 11 PM, with little bicycles and all. And streets were safe till 2-3 AM. When people go inside, trouble goes outside.
