TIL that adults are supposed to be lactose intolerant by jhawkbball27in todayilearned

[–]vitty -1 points0 points ago

My last point was rhetoric, I understand what the drivers are. Though assuming the pressures was based around battle is a bit daft. I don't think milk-drinking has a greater effect on survival than say culture, metal shields, better swords, position of township etc... I imagine it would be a lot more subtle and based around long-term survivorship.

Several tribes in Africa are based around pastorial milk production - in these cases, tolerance to lactose is high (though, interestingly, a result of different gene expression: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/tcga/tcgapdf/Ingram_HG07_LCT-africa.pdf)

You know they're not talking about adults drinking human milk, right? And that the 'developed world' hasn't been around long enough to drive significant evolutionary change?

How can you cherry-pick one letter to the editor (it's not a scientific, peer-reviewed paper) written by a paediatrician who basically says "there's loads of good reasons why I'm right, but I don't want my letter to be that long"?

Your TIL title is about as sensical as one saying "TIL humans are supposed to be black". No, some are, some aren't.

Aside from the above stated flaws in that letter, he proposes no other explanation as to why there is a high prevalence of lactose-tolerance in Western Europeans (and in other pastoralist societies in Africa). He just says "there's no advantage" - yet something must be driving this adaptation.

Ah, I've found the source of the confusion: In this post the question is how long ago was this, but you answered how long was it. The other posts were hidden due to their lower karma. A little hypocritical seeing as you jumped down my throat for not reading things properly. Especially seeing as I did.

I was hoping you'd talk a bit more about the details of all this rather than call me names. Probably the worse reaction I've ever had on Reddit...

Woah.

No, everything I uttered you mentioned in a reply to a different user, they weren't points you addressed (i.e. the issues came up in replies to other questions). I read most of them looking for an answer - I was interested in just how you'd managed all this. But there weren't any, so I posted that. I was going to link to the source of everything I paraphrased, but didn't bother.

Why the anger? I love talking about the stuff I've done like this - I lived in the woods in the some mountains in Spain for a few weeks and was happy to explain in painful detail how I'd done everything I'd done. I assumed you'd be the same, rather than make a reply like you're a 12 year old on Xbox live... Am I a niggerfaggot too?

Super late to the party, but I've got to call you out on this.

You said you spent 2 months living off nothing but game, all of which you found less than 5 miles from your cabin. Not only would you be feeling pretty rough after two months of nothing but protein, finding that much naive game mostly using a bow and arrow is pretty unlikely. I know you claim to have shot since you were 12, but that's not the issue. You'd be needing a rabbit a day (for example), at least - over two months that's 60 odd rabbits. You said you got one big kill that lasted a week or so... Unless you had some hides built, I don't see you sneaking up on something that big, naked (i.e. no camo).

Even if you live in a hot country, it's cold in the evenings/mornings. I used to live in a forest in Madagascar (i.e. pretty close to the equator, in the summer) and in the mornings I'd have trousers, a tshirt and a jacket and still find it a little cool. You make this sound like temperate forest. That would be cold as balls.

Plus, you said you met your wife after this, but that this was only 2 months ago - you met her, seduced her, and married her all in 2 months?

Fuck, man, that's pretty much it. Looks awesome. Shame it's PS3 exclusive, only have a PC.

Looks really good though.

Sweet! Looks pretty awesome. Still all grey and desolate though... Half the attraction of my 'fantasy' game is the process of nature taking back over, everything getting greener.

But it's the greyness I wanted to avoid. I thought playing in a realistic world, with green and grass would be more powerful. The whole 'grey, barren post-apocalypse' is a bit over done. Nature would go mad in reality, and you could hunt game for food etc.

This is the new chain, so neither of those plans would work - need to take out the link at a specific place, and can't cut it :(

Hey man, after closer examination, it seems you're right - there's a lip on the rivet stopping it comng out. How are you meant to pop it out?! Any ideas, bearing in mind I have no access to dremels etc at the moment....

How do the manufacturers expect people to adjust the chain? Is there a special tool?

I didn't mean a link popped out, rather that all I was left with was a tight link, instead of the rivet coming out.

I think the tool might be wrong, and that I need a smaller pin.

I was wondering if they had a cap, but from what I read only some types of chains do, and that even then you can sheer it off with just a chain tool (but you have to replace the rivet with a proper tool after)

Yeah, the other position is for overly tight links. Got that bit down.

The chain tool was inherited along with the bike, from a guy who knew his bikes. That's all I know. Based on another comment, I think I might need a different tool.

Yeah it wiggles around a lot, takes a lot of fiddling to get it lined up. I'm thinking I need a smaller pin..

The pin is there, but seems to be about the same size as the rivet, rather than a little bit small as with the old chain.

Yeah, I was just being a pedant - I agree with your advice whole heartedly, I wouldn't know half the scientific names I do if it wasn't for understanding their roots.

Some are sort of funny, too - Balaenoptera musculus is the blue whale. The specific name means 'little mouse'. Not sure about the generic name - something about wings.

Atro is from Ater for dark rather than deep, but pretty much.
