Zap your brain into the zone: Fast track to pure focus by shenglongin science

[–]viborg 0 points1 point ago

No, it wasn't a matter of self-discipline. I went home and meditated by myself for ten hours a day for a week. I just found their approach fundamentally wrong-headed, from my perspective.

What do you like about that method specifically?

I've been on retreat too, but it wasn't really that great for me and I left after three days.

Very interesting that the article mentions focusing on an external point, I've never really tried any meditation that incorporates that. Although frankly I stopped reading the article when I realized they weren't really going to mention meditation; instead they discussed how the military uses this knowledge to train killers.

I would argue any form of meditation would be beneficial, it doesn't necessarily have to be Buddhist.

You could also try meditation, it seems odd that it wasn't really covered in the article.

That was his only question.

Yeah, I haven't really listened to all of it yet for the exact reasons you mention.

House Republicans late Thursday night adopted an amendment that would prohibit California from receiving any high speed rail money in a huge five-year transportation bill headed to the House floor next week. by viborgin bayarea

Actually, before the 30's, in the Bay Area, there was a highly developed system of street cars that even crossed the Bay Bridge. A lot of the major streets in Oakland seem to be laid out along former street car lines. The system was dismantled, under considerable pressure from the automobile industry presumably. I don't live in the city anymore so I'm no expert on the politics these days. But I do know that a big part of the proposed funding for the high speed rail proposal was expected to come from federal transportation grants, the same thing that pays for highways, etc.

Regardless, what right do these dicks from Texas or wherever, who could possibly be said to actually represent friggin Exxon Mobil, have to micro-manage our transportation policy? They don't live in California, and they don't have to deal with the realities of moving millions of people around in this state. If we decide high-speed rail is in our best interest after thorough consideration, it seems highly presumptuous for the extreme right wing of the US government to cockblock us.

Why doesn't the state have money? Mainly because Republicans have to sign a pledge that they will never raise taxes, no matter what. What's the best way to boost a sagging economy? Raise taxes on the rich, and spend money on public works projects to create jobs.

Additionally, the external issues of petroleum dependency and greenhouse gas emissions are tied in with high speed rail. Not to mention car traffic congestion, and our aging highway infrastructure. But you're right, Somalia is a shining example of how a nation can function without government intervention.

I just realized this is in the grey area for the proper source rule. The source is an interview by the writer with Jimmy Wales, but it's not a link to the full source of the quote.

A Meditation on Anxiety/Depression. Thought I'd share. by Savetonightin Meditation

[–]viborg 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that sounds really tough, I'm so sorry.

Most of the thoughts I could share with you have no objective basis, they're merely my own interpretation. When I meditate, it is always an emotional process. Emotions seem to be correlated with physical sensations - anxiety is a tightness in the abdomen; joy or love may be a feeling of expansion or relief in the chest/heart. Depression and sadness to me feel like emptiness in the heart. Anger is more like heart blockage.

When meditating, I allow my emotional body to relax and heal, as it naturally tends to absent interference from the 'monkey mind'. I feel that it's best to have some object of focus in order to distract the mind, I use a mantra or counting to focus on. It's also crucial to have the intention to relax while meditating. It's what your body wants to do, if you let it.

He is a reporter. If his reporting is based on solid science, it would be better to link to the actual evidence rather than his interpretation of it.

I have issues with mindfulness but I'll put those aside. I feel that it's more constructive to think of anxiety and depression as a lack of something rather than a presence of something external.
