How come he gets to masturbate and I don't get to cheat? by throwaway_quinnin sex

[–]utterdamnnonsense 0 points1 point ago

Whilst doing this "I'm going to use formal logic on your words!" thing, you're ignoring the actual meaning behind the words. For example, saying "There are five people in an empty room," means "There are five people in an otherwise empty room."

While I agree with you to some extent (masturbation, especially when it involves pornography is in some ways similar to cheating, and should be something that is agreed upon in a relationship), your argument is really bad here. At the very least, you need to concede that having another relationship is significantly different from just the act of sex or masturbation.

Most of my peers have a very relaxed view of masturbation and pornography, and they believe that this is basically the only view anyone has ever or could ever hold. "Every guy uses pornography." I find it fascinating that sexual attitudes have such a short historical memory, and I suspect it comes from our discomfort in discussing these topics with the older generation. My parents are far less comfortable with the idea of pornography, and perfectly willing to compare it to cheating, or at least criticize it as an unhealthy addiction. Meanwhile, they still consider masturbation to be healthy and natural, as long as you're not married or it is for the purpose of exploring ways to enhance the sexual experience with your spouse. Or at least, that's the general idea I got from our very minimal conversations.

In any case, adultery and masturbation are neither exactly the same nor completely different. They both involve sexual pleasure. The biggest difference is the degree to which there is a human relationship with someone other than the committed partner.

By dismissing the idea that adultery and masturbation are different, you are dismissing a human relationship as irrelevant, even though human relationships are the most central and important part of the conversation. That doesn't really make any sense.

It really is! I've had that exact chair, and it's even worse than it looks. It's small and awkward to sit in, and the padding is mostly aesthetic.

What trivial act would you like to ban or make illegal? Personally, I would like to outlaw public speakers who start off by saying, "I can't hear you!" or "Let's try that again!" by danger_mcboomin AskReddit

In my city there was some kind of referendum, and in the pamplet meant to explain what it was about, both sides got to argue their positions. I guess the idea was to give the reader an unbiased overall view of the project. But for the life of me, I couldn't even figure out what the heck the project was. Were they voting to build a bridge? Maybe it was about education funding? Both sides were so far skewed that neither even go so far as to look more like mentioning what the referendum was actually about.

North Carolina Pastor calls for concentration camps for gays and execution by starvation by jstalinin politics

[–]utterdamnnonsense 0 points1 point ago

The guy is obviously just an idiot who is speaking to the lowest common denominator, so needs to use boiled down phrases like a few.

Actually, I think his intent with using "a few years" to mean a lifetime was to give a sense of grandeur and importance to his words. Using "a few" to mean a larger number implies that there is a larger context from which the years are being drawn. He wants his audience to know they're talking about changing the course of human history and doing work that is centrally important to the universe, god, heaven, etc..

It strikes me more as an ominous word choice than an idiotic one.

"Few" is a very contextual word, and I have no problem with how he was using it (other than that he was being an asshole). If you say you have a "few" fingers missing, it's probably 2 or 3 three. If you're looking at the sky in the evening but you can only see a few of the stars, you might mean you can only see 100.

It's clear that you didn't actually watch the video. The preacher specifically says

And you know what? In a few years they'll die out. Do you know why? They can't reproduce.

Which is an interesting statement in its admission that homosexuality is genetically transmitted-- or at least somehow is perpetuated through transmission to offspring.

What is the worst advice you've ever received? by sophalopein AskReddit

[–]utterdamnnonsense 0 points1 point ago

I should clarify--by "education" I mean formal education and by "useful" I mean for having the skills necessary to perform a job not for getting a job. And by "not complicated" I mean there are tons of rather obvious things that are still being done terribly, and you don't need to be a genius or a superhero or a college graduate to be capable of fixing them.
