Have we slowly slipped into an era of Newspeak? by ExcessivePunctuationin politics

I came to find Orwell and was not dissapointed. I re-read this roughly once a year, mostly to help my own writing.

miracle + surgical extraction by ultilinkin magicTCG

So if it's an instant miracle, could it be cast at non-miracle cost in response to Surgical Extraction?

If so, that's pretty interesting..

You say that like it's a bad thing. I think we could use more large money-soaked futurist orgies.

If you want to put in primal surge, you might as well throw in the laboratory maniac-abundant growth-primal surge combo for an alternate win condition.

Birthing pod might be nice too.

As I've heard it said, "Expect the Euro to leave Europe before Europe leaves the Euro." by NarwhalBaconCatin Economics

[–]trisgeminus -2 points-1 points ago

If I had money to invest, I'd buy Euros, because there's two scenarios:

1) Greece exits, and the remaining eurozone is stronger because of it

2) Greece stays, and the euro survives it's first major test intact, boosting confidence in the Euro program.

The cat's out of the bag, and no-one wants to go back to european currency babel. Everyone is committed to keeping Greece in the eurozone, from chancellor Merkel to the far-left greek political parties. Besides, what we're seeing is not a run on the banks in the traditional sense (where people have lost confidence that their money will be there when they go to withdraw it), but greeks on the street are withdrawing all their money BECAUSE THEY ARE UNEMPLOYED AND ARE GOING BROKE.

B/G Morbid & Undying by Ishtukin Magicdeckbuilding

[–]trisgeminus 1 point2 points ago

This looks pretty fun to play. This is basically a Birthing Pod deck, you might want to go ahead and add the Pod.

Couple of things:

-Drop paralell lives. It does nothing in this deck.

-Maelstrom pulse, verdant catacombs, woebringer demon and cauldron of souls aren't standard legal.

-I think you meant "cavern of souls" now that I think about it

-Glissa wrecks face if you're already in B/G

TIL Back in ancient china they used Mannequins to lure the enemies to shoot arrows at, and that they would later pull them down and get a free supply of arrows. by thecreator1337in todayilearned

[–]trisgeminus 17 points18 points ago

Social upheaval in ancient china was actually pretty common. Ideological purges where whole classes of intellectuals were murdered happened somewhat frequently during these periods of upheaval.

Your example itself shows the real story. Technologies were destroyed following a change in leadership and ideology. In this uncertain environment, tradesmen and proto-scientists guarded their innovations rather than disseminate them.

I wanted to ask you: some of my intelligent but non-technical friends have expressed interest in learning what this whole "coding" thing is all about. What's the best way for someone to get started in learning how to program for fun and self-improvement (without buying anything)?

Heh, I was thinking of putting together something like this. If you can manage the white splash for travel preparations, gavony township would be great. Some mana dorks might not be a bad idea, since you can make them large later in the game. Nightshade Peddler might be cool too - deathtouch pingers are awesome.

How are they going to address the Reed situation? (Spoilers) by vangorelolin gameofthrones

[–]trisgeminus 1 point2 points ago

It's possible that they could have swept their "function" into Osha, and dropped them from the story. It's a shame, because they're awesome characters, but it IS something that they could cut to make the story fit.

The only way that we, the audience, would trust Jojen and Meera is to explain the background with Eddard Stark and Howland Reed. Maybe they'll introduce the crannogmen when Asha takes Moat Cailin, but probably not.

If they chose to drop the Reeds entirely, I'd understand, but I'd not be happy about it.

World-building with Mercenaries. Ideas? by ImmrtalMaxin rpg

[–]trisgeminus 2 points3 points ago

I don't know how much Game of Thrones you've seen or read, but this is basically exactly how things work on the OTHER continent. It sets up some pretty interesting situations later in the series.

Also, if possible I like to use current events to inspire the politics of my games. There's a fascinating situation evolving in Mali right now that was touched off by Qadaffi's mercenaries heading home with the money and weapons that they got in their (failed) task and starting a pretty good separatist movement.

This is pretty similar to how Switzerland get started, actually.

So one possible hook for a company would be a "would-be liberation army in training" another hook might be an army that's owned by a certain nation, and then "hired out" for money to other nations, like the Hessians in the revolutionary war.

Some other semi-independent companies throughout the ages: Abraham Lincoln brigade in the spanish civil war, the knights templar, french foreign legion, the german Landsknecht, Blackwater USA, Hezbollah, the Janissaries. They're all in Wikipedia.

I think the overall lesson is that there are very few truly independent soldier-of-fortune mercenaries. Many of them started in a specific time and place for a specific reason, and then time and circumstances made them drift from their original context, but brotherhood and common identity kept them together.
