TROPHY CASE

My fucking stupid 18 year old son racked up $15K in credit card debt. Now the wife and I are arguing over it. What to do? by MySonIsFuckingStupidin AskReddit

[–]treebox 1 point2 points ago

They kept offering me them everytime I went to the teller to do something, eventually I got so pissed off I told the guy I'd sign for one right there and then if he could explain to me how I would pay it off with zero income (I'm a student), when he began to repeat his pitch over again I told him he was a fucking moron and walked out. I go to a different branch now, however if anyone in the UK is reading this, avoid Santander, awful retail service generally.

Actually I've been studying politics and communications for five years and thought it was an informative yet obviously slightly unbalanced look at the military industrial complex. I am well informed on politics and foriegn policy, so take your condescending comments elsewhere.

Already asked you a question in another comment but just stopping by here once again to say your writing/conversational style is really enjoyable to read, you sound like you'd be fun to have a drink with. Thanks for putting yourself forward like this, it seems everyone is enjoying your answers.

I study Communications, in fact I'm currently heavily immersed in Great War propaganda and Edward Bernays. I've been to a few highly competitive corporate gradjob interviews and with one large US corporation I'm through to the final round which involves them dropping a couple of grand on flights and hotels for my final interviews which is obviously very exciting. I can honestly say that despite all I've said that could be seen as negative, I couldn't have got as far as I have without my experience at the fruit company. It taught me how to do effective public relations first hand and gave me experience in brand management, creating a popular perception, repairing damage when things go wrong and creating the illusion of value. I'm pretty entrepreneurially minded so essentially I got what I came for and moved on. I can only say that in hindsight really, obviously that wasn't my thought process at the time. Business and society needs leaders, and it also needs employees. Such is life, it's just important that the right people end up in the places they work best.

Honestly I was afraid I'd first of all, underperform in my degree since my 20 hour contract was pushing 26 hours a week by the time I left. It was unreasonable. Secondly I was afraid I would get stuck in retail. At first I was mega enthusiastic about working there and loved the thought of staying on internally until another person studying an MSc who had been there a while took me aside and told me not to get so caught up in the hype and remember 'it is just retail'. I seriously have to thank her for this, because I know that attitude can be seen as demeaning by some, she was right to keep me on the right track. I guess what I took away from all of this is to be a bit more wary around masters of psychology (retail sales managers) and that not everyone has the same aspirations

Yes you're right, what I wrote didn't make sense at all. What I mean is this. When I worked at Apple I suddenly realised all the employees were about 22 or 23 and almost all had degrees. Many of them had been there for around two years. Apple's retail strategy appears to look for highly educated young people to fill their retail roles as they are usually highly socialised and also think at a particular intelligible level. Realistically after graduation you should be looking to get a 'real' job. I think Apple has achieved something remarkable and clever in that they mobilise the prestige of the brand to appeal to the exact 'type' of person I just described when realistically you do not get paid much more than someone folding tshirts in a clothes shop for significantly more mental stress and work in your daily activities. What I was attempting to say when I mentioned devaluation is that this is evidence that an academic degree has been devalued. A graduate settles or stops by this kind of role and pay, either on their way to corporate roles, or perhaps indefinitely as Apple promises internal promotion which can seem attractive. Once again I will say this is an absolutely outstanding business strategy that they've pulled off to great effect, but not one that I was comfortable participating in. Instead I am focusing on finishing off my degree and seeking corporate employment that earns more. I don't want to be rude in writing all this, just my thoughts.

Sad isn't it, a Creative position is now suited for someone with a degree. Devaluation of the workplace in action.

Definitely good you're still here to regale us with your experience. Quick question, trivial compared to the topic of this post believe me, what's the timepiece you're wearing in that picture?

"If you want the American Dream," Ed Miliband says, "go to Finland." by newpua_biein TrueReddit

[–]treebox 0 points1 point ago

Do you feel a lot of the stigma associated with immigration in Finland has a lot to do with the colour of the immigrant's skin? I'm quite nomadic and I intend to live and work in another country when I graduate in a number of months. One thing I find interesting is that if I talk to German students, for example, about maybe working in Germany they'll be happy for the idea and think its awesome. I'm an Irish & British white male. It's interesting because talk to them about their country in detail and maybe they bring up the topic of immigration to their country, they'll complain to me about immigration when I would be an immigrant myself, yet they don't feel bothered by the thought of me living and working in their country. I believe it's because I am white.

I just find it an issue of fairness. Stealing a TV show from a director is the same as stealing a photograph from a photographer, thus the irony.

This is pretty much the irony of reddit. For example people complain that HBO shows get canceled yet they torrent them, giving no revenue to the producers of the content. Also my friend is a photographer and becomes irate when people steal and misuse his work, yet he torrents huge quantities of TV shows for free.
