He's not entirely right. For starters the PC isn't the best platform. If your only basis for determining which is the best platform is how often you can dump money into then you're wrong. It's multi-purpose device too. I don't really care if he (or myself) dumped a lot of money into it. There are millions of things I can do with that aren't gaming.

But more importantly there is a difference between the loud mouth rage tards who feel they're entitled to everything and people who are upset because a company is trying to con them. Implying both groups are right in what they do is wrong.

Oh and as always he talks far too long. He makes his point and then bangs on about it for 10+ minutes longer than need be.

Still that is how the authors wanted to end it. Whether it is good or not doesn't matter because in the end that's subjective. It's very weak to give and change the ending afterwards.

And the thing is just in the first month alone it sold 1.3 million units. I'd put good money on the fact that easily less than half of those people were contributing to the noise about the ending on the internet and yet here we are with an artistic compromise in place.

What ending is the right one now if they continue the series? Are we going to have arguments over which ending it should follow from?

They should have just said they're sorry that some people didn't like it but that's the story.

No, he does have a point. Gamers are far too forgiving and as a result they receive sub-par quality products.

Of course gamers can get upset but it will usually be over something stupid unfortunately.

I've not learned anything in the sense that I've pretty much known everything I said already and only looked up links to avoid the possibility of "Citation needed" replies.

Like I said I never said it came to a complete standstill, it's slowed and it's certainly not been as exciting and even though we can even reach up to 3.9 ghz we still see plenty of systems being sold in the 2 to 3ghz range. Less in some cases if it's an atom.

It's no surprise desktop sales have slowed as well. Windows XP is actually pretty good and there is just isn't enough incentive to upgrade something every 6 months.

And it's no surprise Windows 7 reportedly runs fine on XP level hardware. The idea that you can run Windows OS that's 2 generations newer and the same hardware isn't exactly a common occurrence.

So yes again processors that are a decade apart aren't exactly the same but it's not like the days when I bought a win95 machine and it was effectively out of date in the same year.

That's all I'm saying. More cores is obviously nice but it's not quite the same.

It's not only old applications. I believe CryEngine 3 has some of the best multi-core support and that only supports up to 8.

Which, yes is fine for now, but down the line if you have a 16 core machine that's still only say 3.0ghz and run it against a 4ghz 8 core machine, the 8 core only quite likely will run it a bit better. Assuming all other hardware factors are equal.

Games aren't doing a single relatively dumb task that can be split an infinite number of times against infinite threads so games will for the foreseeable future always benefit more by faster cores rather than adding more cores.

And no one said there was zero improvement within the last decade. But it's certainly been slower and what improvements we have seen aren't necessarily being taken advantage of unless of course you're running multiple programs for most people there isn't going to be any real significant reason to go from a dual core to quad core machine or a quad core to a 6 core.

That's also probably part of the reason desktop sales aren't exactly great and the dekstop market has been shrinking recently rather than growing. People just aren't seeing the benefits to upgrade as often as they used to have to.

Of course there are some improvements per core but you won't see that sort of difference unless you can take advantage of all 6 cores.

I'm not going to look up a load of info on it but here's a good link on Valve's process to best decide how to handle it.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/11237

And here's a guy talking about how he had to tweak Windows to get TF2 to better use his system.

http://www.kwokinator.com/blog/20091221/team-fortress-2-quadcores-and-you

You can't just throw more cores at the problem and expect things to get better. At least not for awhile because multi-core programming is much harder and not everyone is up to handling it just yet. A lot of aspects of a game can't be spread across multiple cores and even when you spread different items across separate threads they are still all reliant on the slowest one.

And with most games, yes you'd almost certainly see more of an improvement with a 6ghz dual core system than a 10 core 3ghz system.

Games are changing and we'll see even more improvement over time but those statistics are slightly deceptive because a lot of games won't use your whole processor if you've got 4+ cores.

Yes people even hang out in Wal-mart and Target. Why else do you think they have restaurants in them?

From 2002: http://www.codingforums.com/archive/index.php/t-9619.html

Intel is going to be releasing their 3GHz Pentium 4 processor this Thursday. Its gonna have some new hyperthreading technology in it. New P4s with the new hyperthreading are gonna have a 'HT' on the P4 logo. What the hyperthreading is supposed to do is increase efficiency on the existing P4 architecture. Looks to be intresting!

I can still buy systems with processor speeds below 3ghz. It's not hard at all to still find systems with like a 2.3 ghz.

Hyper threading isn't new and quad core actually isn't necessarily any sort of real benefit. Most software can't take advantage of more than one core anyway and you're benefit will be more in running multiple applications rather than improve an individual application.

In fact actually running multiple cores can make certain applications slower rather than fast.

So yeah, I do think they're stagnating.
