Why are people so fascinated with gore nowadays? by NewRandomHeroin psychology

[–]thepurplemongoose -2 points-1 points ago

Sorry, I should have been more clear on what I meant by that.

People, mostly men, have always been fascinated with sex. When technology made pornography more and more accessible (with magazine, dirty films, and now the Internet) it grew into a hugely profitable industry, and one of the most common vices.

With violence and gore, I think movies, games and series are the current incarnations of what used to be (equally gorey) legends and tales.

As to why we (or at least a large portion of us) are fascinated by violence, that is a far bigger question. Personally, I think part of it is searching for some stimulation. Gore, especially snuff and other Internet stuff, does affect you, if only initially. As you become more desensitized you need something more for the same effect. For those who say I doesn't phase them whatsoever, I wonder why they would search it out? Morbid curiousity? Curiousity and boredom itself can be a powerful motivator.

I just got the impression from the post that your main question was why human culture seems like it is glorifying gore more than it has before, and I don't think it does.

Nowadays?

People have always been fascinated by gore. Consider gladiatorial combat, duels, public execution etc.

Much like sexual gratification, it's the medium of consumption that has radically shifted, rather than some psychological shift.

"It's tough to con Reddit." by soreillyjonesin worldnews

[–]thepurplemongoose 13 points14 points ago

Annnnd... it all came out. I don't think Reddit's too hard to con (if you know how to con and game Reddit), BUT I think by nature it quickly self corrects.

One of Reddit's greatest fear is of being conned, appear foolish or hoodwinked... and there are always users patiently waiting to call bullshit (even to the truth). Look at KONY 2012 for an example of how quickly Reddit can backtrack and self-correct.

What is something that society finds repulsive/taboo/etc. that you see no problem with? (Possibly NSFW) by ruckus666in AskReddit

[–]thepurplemongoose 0 points1 point ago

For me "slut" just means you are promiscuous, so I don't think it's wrong to call a lady who engages in lots of casual sex a slut. I just don't think it should be a pejorative as it is. The term for a guy, I suppose, would be a player. Essentially they mean the same thing, but the tone is different.

Whore, on the other hand, means prostitute, so if you get paid to have sex, then you're a whore. I'm all for legalization, and I don't think it should have such a stigma.

What practice would you engage in regularly if it weren't so socially unacceptable? by thebanisterslidein AskReddit

[–]thepurplemongoose 1 point2 points ago

As a girl it's easier to get laid, but it' far less socially acceptable (which is kinda the point of the thread) for a girl to proposition casual sex than a guy.

So her point is valid here.

Joss Whedon personally thanks fans for Avengers support in this letter. by nicks1205in movies

As much as I agree, it's probably best left buried, there is one thing I'm curious about...

Can you imagine the hype, the excitement, if Firefly actually came back. I think the Internet may explode... and it would probably make a fuck ton of money.

At some point... I think it will happen. It's a gold mine of a brand. Someone's going to try cash in at some stage. I'd rather it be Whedon... and ASAP... before Captain Malcolm Reynolds gets too old, with a wrinkly companion.

Celebs get it both ways. Their press photo's are them touched up, photoshopped to make them look their best, and then some. Then paparazzi and casual snappers are also out for the worst possible photo of them.

Everyone, EVERYONE, (except Barney Stinson) can look terrible in a bad photograph.

Why this's considered any different from public nudity, I'll never understand by Osciletin WTF

[–]thepurplemongoose 0 points1 point ago

The same reason it can be illegal to have sex with someone, but if you wait 2 seconds for the appropriate birthday, it's legal.

Arbitrary lines need to be drawn somewhere.

[–]thepurplemongoose 0 points1 point ago

Heheheh don't worry. No offense taken.

I have great respect for both sets of athletes. I'm just a rugby fan. You are right though, touch rugby isn't as prestigious as either of its tackle counterparts (union or league).

You see some great juking in all these sports.

True, but I wouldn't knock NZL rugby players... that's an entire nation devoted to one sport. And they're incredible.

I don't disagree, insofar as what I'd like to see. And I think war is horrid.

But morale is more important to winning a war than morals. For people to fight and kill other people (or aliens), it is far easier, and more successful, to break it down into us (fighting for right) versus them (animals, monsters, evil people fighting for villainous ends).

You don't want your soldiers (or civilians) to balk at the death of the enemy. Practically speaking.

I'm sure the post was trying to reference Dol, but there is no real objective measure of pain. Mostly a mixture of self-report and observation is used, including heart rate, sweating, clenching, swearing etc.

Can't think of the source now, but apparently older men have, on average, the highest pain threshold... through experiments done during World War II. In terms of being able to take the most intense electrical shocks before saying "uncle" so to speak. I'll try to find any corroboration.
