TIL that when asked what "American Pie" meant, Don McLean replied, "It means I never have to work again." by Lyran_Outcastin todayilearned

TIL that Ebert called the lip sync done by Grand Rapids, MI "the greatest music video ever made."

As a person who lives in GR, I'd like to know who the fuck thought this was a good song to illustrate why Grand Rapids is not a dying city. Also, the video is not a good representation of our city.

Thank you for reading my rant.

UPDATE: Someone reported me to the Child protective services by Hiphoppingtonin AskReddit

[–]thanatosstoppedby 0 points1 point ago

As a child, my parents did foster care. After kids being taken out of our home and put back into their mother's care only to be shipped of again, my mom just couldn't take it. She come home from taking kids to court appointed visitations crying because it hurt the kids so much when their parents wouldn't show up.

This picture gives one the idea that Iowa isn't a flat sprawling corn field dotted with pigs and cows.

This book was required reading for my high school graduation. High School! I've resented the book ever since. Maybe I'll have to give it another try.

Can't swim when a current is pulling away and under.

Woman texting and walking falls off pier into Lake Michigan by emtcjin offbeat

[–]thanatosstoppedby 3 points4 points ago

The rip currents around these piers are hella dangerous. It's just a lake so you think it wouldn't be so bad. But there a dozens of deaths, (deaths mind you, not injuries) on the West side of the state every year because of these currents.

I think this picture is older than 1950's, and there are at least 4 children. Possibly one in the crib and another on the bed.

TIL there's a biodegradable Urn that contains a tree seed that gets its nutrients from your ashes - You can become a Tree when you die! by Deathworm-Jimin todayilearned

[–]thanatosstoppedby 0 points1 point ago

Promessia is an even better alternative to cremation. Using less energy to freeze dry a body and brake it down to a better fertilizer.

Scavengers don't bother with buried bodies, and as long as a body isn't buried next to the water you are drinking there is almost no risk of disease.

That being said, DoctorRobot is correct. Cremation burns away most of the good stuff. Put those seeds in the grave of an unembalmed body and it will be a happy tree!

Dead since 1920.. This 2 years old baby sometime open her eyes. by Paradoxouin creepy

[–]thanatosstoppedby 2 points3 points ago

Usually embalmed bodies have special caps under the lids to keep the eyes closed. I doubt there is enough moisture in this crypt to cause this. The reason this place has such amazingly preserved corpses is due to the lack of moisture.

Still creepy, though.

Moving into a brand new house in less than a month. What are some DIY things some of you have done (or wish you had) with a new home? by jam3pin DIY

Holy Shit! I just realized there is a place in my house where I could put a pole from the attic to the basement! It's an awesome 3-story drop.

Eyeballs are almost all water. They, along with the brain, are the first things to go. Assuming this body was naturally preserved; the eyes are long gone.

I really wish more girls were as rational and nice as this girl in situations like this. by m0shim0shiin TwoXChromosomes

I met my first girlfriend in a similar situation. She found my phone number in his wallet and called me. She asked me a few questions, and it turned out that she lived just down the street.

The next day we went to his place. It was worth it.

Why do I only have nightmares? by mililaniin psychology

[–]thanatosstoppedby 6 points7 points ago

A few years ago, I read about a study on the idea that nightmares help us work out situations that frighten us. Children are afraid of things like monsters and the dark, so the dream about what might happen. Adults are afraid of major disasters or loosing their job, so they try to work that out in their sleep.

My cat rips up paper to get my attention. She'll pull books off shelves and jump on tables looking for paper. We stopped using the shredder and just put stuff on the floor for her.

For those that live in America... by hyp-Rin fashion

I work in vintage and agree with cecikierk. This country is sprawling and bigger cities tend to have stuff pretty picked over. You might want to try smaller cities or towns and check out their vintage shops. Our store is in Michigan and we're had people form New York and LA drop $100+ on clothes they can sell for three times as much.

Where in the US will you be staying?
