Sysprep gone wrong. Help? by tehnommonsterin sysadmin

[–]tehnommonster[S] 0 points1 point ago

This was the master for everything. The RODC is literally useless in this case as it only stores a fraction of the data required for a full DC to run. If, as I said, I had another full DC, it would be as easy as dropping in another server and letting it replicate.

But that's not the case with only RODC's.

Interesting ideas you are posing... thanks very much for that.

Didn't even think of the reg keys.

I will give that a go tomorrow morning (it's close to 1am here).

Thanks a million.

Didn't think so.

I guess this is what happens when you give an first year tech administrative access in a $10k testing environment.

I'm going to have some angry SQL developers tomorrow!

Nup, these were setup in-house. I also don't think our current agreement will include the testing systems :(

I will get someone to give MS a call and see if we can sort something out. Thanks :)

Yup. I think the pooch is screwed on this one. Just to make it clear though, I don't care about the broken server, but do you know of any way to just restore the AD/DC/DNS to a fresh install that won't take days to finish?

If I had another DC the whole situation would be as easy as telling DNS to shift the load onto the other server :(

Thanks very much for your help :)

I didn't think so. My main concern is restoring the DC/AD/DNS. Hardware and licenses aren't a problem. Do you have any ideas? If I did a fresh install on a new box??

Thanks!

It's impossible to promote an RODC, unfortunatley, it stores only a fraction of what the main DC does :(

Thanks for the article, I'll have a look :)

Nope, unfortunately. I wish it was that easy. The tech responsible only made a backup of the RODC, and you know, due to its...err... READ ONLY nature, it's useless.

I tried that. The win2k8r2x64 DVD won't even provide me with that option.

Nope, first thing I tried. It goes straight back to "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."

Let me have a talk to my web buddy for you, I will PM.

Read user's email? by sketchtasticin sysadmin

[–]tehnommonster 3 points4 points ago*

Even if you just copy and paste a template from the net. Being a bigger company with lots of subsidiaries, our legal team actually outsourced someone to write one for the whole company. But reading through it, and some of the examples online, they all seem to do the same thing, effectively.

Ensure you have everyone that even touches a computer sign it, and talk to management about denying access for anyone who hasn't by a certain date. Obviously keep a permanent record - we embed ours into the employment contract.

I have seen some really big fuckups involving Acceptable Use Policies, it really is something that should be a priority.

EDIT: Make sure you back-date the contract ;)

EDIT 2:The Privacy Act '98 is a commonwealth act, your state doesn't matter when it comes to this :)

No matter how you do it, I can't see a way automatically transfer. You can export (using JavaScript), depending on what version of cPanel you are using, or even just un-hash all the records. As far as I'm concerned, either way you're going to have to do it manually.

I would love to hear any other suggestions, or if you come up with a way to do it automatically :-)

cPanel to cPanel migrations between different servers work very well, and I'm assuming this would just transfer all the settings over in the correct format?

Read user's email? by sketchtasticin sysadmin

Australian / Asia-Pacific sysadmin here.

This all comes down to the use policy that your staff signed upon arrival. 99% of companies will give management virtually unlimited power in the Acceptable use of IT policy when it comes to monitoring electronic communication (phone calls, email etc). ONLY if your users have signed a policy that states this.

Something like: "Management reserves the right to monitor all communication, via electronic means or otherwise, at their discretion for any reason. This information may be used for...."

If they haven't then reading emails breaches the Privacy Act.

If you don't have a policy like this, then you need to follow it up, or your management can't do anything about foul play within the company (and therefore, can't dismiss employees based on what would be considered illegally obtained evidence (such as reading work email or listening to phone calls)).

(Windows) DNS Woes after a server crash... by carbonatedbeveragein sysadmin

[–]tehnommonster 0 points1 point ago*

I had this issue a few years back with 2003 DNS server, but I am at a loss remembering how I fixed it.

Very basic suggestion, do you have a timeout on your DNS forwarder record? If you do, then all requests will try to be found locally before forwarding to external DNS sources, obviously. Just the first thing that popped into my head.

Will let you know if I come up with anything :-)

Not as far as I'm aware, unless, as you hinted to, you write a script to transfer it all over in an acceptable format.

Suggestions on rack-mount/scale UPS hardware by mudclubin sysadmin

[–]tehnommonster 1 point2 points ago

I would recommend something like the APC MGE Galaxy UPS units. I use the Galaxy 300 model, they come in all different flavors: http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=438

These aren't really rack mountable, but they do the job - especially across multipule racks with different equipment.

For rack mountable, I would recommend these, I use them in remote office's, usually for RODC's and non-critical equipment - http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SURTD3000XLIM&total_watts=200
