Ha! calvinandhobbes classic comic by amsfmhin calvinandhobbes

[–]tashbarg 10 points11 points ago

No classic at all, it's a mashup. I think the original comic is just fine.

Butchering Bill's awesome art is impudent.

I like it a lot. I'm not sure if I get used to that intense orange, but I'll give it a try. Thank you!

My first C program: simple process supervisor like daemontools/runit in 359 LoC by uggedalin archlinux

[–]tashbarg 1 point2 points ago

It's a style called literate programming pioneered by CompSci legend Donald Knuth. The goal is, to write a book about your program which is also compilable. You're not supposed to read that documentation in the source files. There is a separate compiler step that generates "the book" and the source files for the compiler. You can browse that "book" also on his homepage an it reads quite well. Of course, you can overdo that too. But it's supposed to be more verbose.

TeX is written that way, using a system called (C)WEB, written by Knuth himself.

I have always used Shift-Cmd-L on a highlighted word to do a Google search. But now it's gone. Anyone else has this problem? by the6thReplicantin mac

As far as I know, this is a service and works with any text you select. It's a lesser known OSX feature.

Go to the "Safari" menu (or the whatever application you have currently active) while some text is selected, and select services. There should be quite a few from pre-installed and user-installed applications, running or not. It's a nice feature. There's also service settings, where you can change the shortcut the service should use. The one you search should be listed by "text" since it works when you highlight text.

Although I'm not quite sure the world needs another process supervisor, it's a nice little project to start with. And I really have to say, that's beautifully commented code. Really nice. Donald Knuth would be proud!

I go to play with an electron microscope today, diatoms are so cool. by josieisawesomein pics

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help you out.

You can use the really easy upload wizard from Wikimedia Commons (wikipedia account needed, but you can create one on the spot). Once it's up there, everybody can use it easily on wikipedia pages (in every language).

There's even a diatoms category but there aren't pictures of this quality.

And here's how to use it in wikipedia pages. Basically, just give the filename.

[–]tashbarg 26 points27 points ago

If that's your pic, why don't you "donate" that to wikipedia and insert into the diatom page? It's done real fast and would be totally awesome.

There are two people in this photo. And I hope you used a tripod, or else it gets even more complicated.

Hoooly shit. I've got that tab open for a while, and found it much later. Forgot totally what it was about and after looking at a few of this pictures, I thought: Well, those are fine pics, but that makeup is really badly done. The photographer should have hired a better makeup artist. They don't even look like statues.

Then, the last pic came.

TL;DR: Forgot about the tab and thought this were real people until last pic.

My grandfather, a vocal proponent of alternative energy, finally got his first fully electric car. This was installed in his garage. by Jonny_Strangerin pics

[–]tashbarg 1 point2 points ago

Even with power coming from dirty sources, electric cars have advantages. There are times (mostly at night) where there is too much energy (coal plants can't shut down for the night) and currently this excess energy is often used to transport water up a mountain. When you need it, you let it down again and, presto, instant hydro-power. Problem: It's inefficient.

With electric cars, you can control the charging behavior automatically and charge mostly at night, when the excess power is available and cheap.

EDIT: Oh, sorry. I thought you were the OP. The request still stands and I'll copy it in a toplevel comment.

Almost doesn't seem real. Musician in color. by Taterpuggin pics

[–]tashbarg 0 points1 point ago

Well, it isn't real because the saturation slider for this pic was cranked up beyond good reason. In real life, those colors are colorful, but a lot less intense.

Russia? Russia comes this near? Oh well.

That's wrong. It's: Russia? So many are from Russia? Oh well.

Apparently, it's a statistics chart about the descent of some people.

/r/emacs, what is your favorite color theme? by CodeBlockin emacs

[–]tashbarg 2 points3 points ago

I'm still using 23 and after a short experiment with themes, I ditched them because they didn't work all too well with some major or minor modes.

The default is fine for me. Maybe when 24 is out, I'll reconsider.

Tar is an archive like zip. More common on *nix. Perhaps you should download a zipped version which should be easy to decompress. Then you get ttf-files which you can install using the standard way of your OS.

There is no ASCII-code since this is unicode. The unicode codepoint is U+2E2E.

There should be no need to set them as default font. When the default font doesn't have the glyph, the OS should search for a replacement font that does contain.

Neither of them were official and since they're both represented by the reversed question mark ... who cares?

[–]tashbarg 0 points1 point ago

Try to install DejaVu fonts. They contain that glyph.

[–]tashbarg 2 points3 points ago

But as some people seem to have problems viewing the ⸮, I can understand your decision to use the other.

As I said.

Your system seems to lack a font that contains the reverse question mark. My system uses the DejaVu fonts to render it.

Has nothing to do with reddit, but with the fonts installed on your system. I see both symbols just fine. You seem to lack a font that has the reversed question mark glyph.
