My adorable new Fennec Fox by penutshell17in Pets

[–]synt4x 2 points3 points ago

It's cute, but do these really make good pets? What sort of extra care do you need to give them over a dog?

Beer consumption and headaches by cursedmonkeyin beer

Be forewarned that some beers, especially homebrew, may contain sulfites as well. They're used to remove chlorine and chloramine from the brewing water, and also to halt fermentation on some sweetened beers.

Can we address a possible misconception? by OneGearin Greyhounds

[–]synt4x 1 point2 points ago

The longest mine can last while maintaing a regular jog is 2 miles. If it's hot outside he'll start dragging after 1 mile, even if you hose him down before. If your only criteria for a pet was to be a jogging buddy for a 10k or longer, then you may want to go for another breed. However, I'd hope most pet owners have other motivations as well.

10 Summer beers to try by nogorillain beer

[–]synt4x 0 points1 point ago

My favorite is to do the sampler but with just the sours and pliny, which I think runs ~$12 (or $16 for a full board)

Add on a trip to Bear Republic and Lagunitas, and you won't be able to stand by the time you get to Moylan's.

~$12.50/12 oz is the MSRP at the brewery so you're not getting hit with that much markup. Most of the Russian River sours are in this price range. I think they're worth it, but they're special occasion beers.

I like it as a water activities (like tubing) beer where glass is a no-go. Fermented watermelon has a sour off flavor in general that doesn't play with bitter very well, but I find the tartness refreshing when it's insanely hot.

Why I don't trust industrial farming. by Drkufain gardening

I've only gotten a few off of my quinault and chandler plants that went into the ground last winter, but they've been as big or larger than the ones at the store (maybe 2+" long?).

I made beer sorbet. Summer may never be the same. by lizconsinin food

[–]synt4x 1 point2 points ago

I did this before, but I didn't dilute the beer at all and it was too alcoholic to freeze in the ice cream machine. I ended up getting some liquid nitrogen which did the trick nicely.

New Orleans beerit, what brews do you have that I should pick up while there? by MrGonzin beer

[–]synt4x 8 points9 points ago

Go to Avenue Pub. It's one of the best beer bars in the world, and definitely rivals (if not bests) bay bars like Toronado and The Trappist. It's a really short street car ride from downtown. There's also a non-obvious upstairs balcony area that opens in the evenings and has a completely different set of beers on tap. Cooters Browns is also acceptable for a mass appeal beer bar, but doesn't have anything super unique. Ignore any recommendations to go to the Bulldog - it had good selection 10 years ago, but hasn't kept up and is more of college bar than anything these days.

For bottle shopping, the best selection in town is surprisingly at Stein's Deli.

For local breweries, there's unfortunately not a ton of super unique beers in New Orleans. NOLA Brewing is IMO the best brewery in town, but the majority of their beers are session beers. This is a turn off for some beer geeks - but hey, it's fucking hot. Other "local-ish" breweries in the area:

You can skip most of Abita beers, although they are quite ubiquitous. They lost their soul years ago. I still like an amber with fried seafood or a poboy, but I'd still take a NOLA brown over it if available.

Sixpoint to release 12 IPAs in a series using the same recipe, except each has a differnent hop by TheRealFenderin beer

Mikkeller also makes a single hop series, which is pretty awesome. It's a shame six point isn't doing them all simultaneously so you can have a side-by-side test while they're fresh.

My Greyhound puppy is now 5 weeks old by jstonehillin Greyhounds

Call me curious. I've always heard that there are less than 100 greyhound puppies born a year outside of racing.

I've always wanted to see what my guy looked like as a puppy though.

gitolite is similar to gitosis, but receives regular maintenance still and has a lot more features and flexibility. Gitlab dropped gitosis support in favor of gitolite recently if that's any indication.

Sac International Airport looking to dump TSA by ridicusaucein Sacramento

[–]synt4x 1 point2 points ago

Politics of the effectiveness of TSA and security theater aside, Sacramento has the easiest and friendliest TSA staff of any airport I regularly fly through. I normally don't have to wait longer than 5 minutes to get through, and I've never been given attitude about opting out of the body scanners.

Nutella Stout: Recap, and looking for a little help on the recipe. by Mjap52in Homebrewing

[–]synt4x 4 points5 points ago

Fat kills head retention. If you've ever been to a high school or frat party, you've probably witnessed people wiping their finger on their nose then dipping it in the beer to dissipate the head on their beer so they can chug it down.

If you take nutella and remove the palm oil and sugar, you're really left with hazelnuts and cocoa. Whatever amount of skim milk they add is insignificant. Hazelnuts still have a ton of oil in them, and hazelnut extract is pretty good, so I would have gone that same route.

OP mentioned that it didn't come out as chocolatey as desired. I've never made a chocolate-focused beer, but Denny Conn has recommended chocolate extract as his preferred method for getting a beer chocolatey, so I'll defer to his wisdom and not hold shame for using flavor extract.
