What formal computational or mathematical models explain the decrease in neuroplasticity in adults? by mycatharsisin Neuropsychology

[–]subtextual 1 point2 points ago

I'm confused as to what this is. It seems like a place where people (or just one person?) working in the field of cognitive science (or related fields?) pose questions that they hope others will comment on? Do I have this right? Anyway, the question is interesting!

What Would Happen If You Isolated A Bunch of Babies On An Island? by DogPencilin AskReddit

[–]subtextual 6 points7 points ago

The specific stressor of the caregiver wearing a mask was suggested by the OP of the thread. You can't actually do research on children being raised by adults wearing masks because it would be incredibly unethical. But you might be interested in the Still Face Experiment -- in this classic experimental paradigm, the caregiver holds his or her face completely still and expressionless while the baby tries desperately to get some response (there's a video you can watch if you follow the link. Babies are absolutely distraught after only a few seconds of this, underscoring the amazing importance of social interaction with a caregiver to a baby's social, emotional, and ultimately cognitive development.

Link where? You mean, link philmarreddit to his own previous submission in the removal comment?

Hi Phil - You've already submitted this pic to both /r/BotanicalPorn and /r/AnimalPorn. Reposts are allowed, but only after 3 months. Cheers!

Edit: I think kjoneslol wants me to post the original submissions, which are here and here, from 26 days ago.

Hi viktov - the title of your submission should include some context on the plant(s) in the picture. If you don't know, it's okay to be general (e.g., bushes by the side of the road). Thanks.

[Official Vote Thread] Establish a Schedule for Official SFWPorn Network Vote Threads by TheRedditPopein PornOverlords

[–]subtextual 2 points3 points ago

See? This is why we need discussion threads before vote threads! ;)

I think in the interests of getting things done, it makes sense to vote this change in, then the very next discussion-thread-before-vote should center potential changes to the schedule. That probably sounds like I'm being sarcastic but I'm actually not.

I knew that IRC was chat, I just don't know any more details than that, like how to get on it. Which is okay -- if it is anything like the old modmail discussions were, it's a bit too boys' club for me. (I was going to note that some of us SFW mods are ladies, but then I realized that maybe 'some' is not true?)

[–]subtextual 2 points3 points ago

Actually I almost brought up the weekend thing -- why would the discussions and votes always have to be on the same days of the week? But then I figured asking mods to log in to reddit and type a few characters one time over a whole weekend only after a week's worth of notice probably wasn't that much of a hardship. I would be bothered if the discussion was weekends only though.

Also, I would totally hang out on IRC, except that (a) I am too old to actually know what IRC really is, and (b) aren't I supposed to spend my time working at my job and stuff like that?

Honestly, because there is a group of you who mod a whole slate of SFW subs, and I cannot figure out how much you all talk to each other. Sometimes, it seems like you talk all the time and those of us who only mod a few SFW subs "miss" some brainstorming that goes on behind the scenes. Other times, I assume that you all are on the same page (usually about something that doesn't really affect the subs I moderate), only to find that some major proposal hasn't been discussed beforehand!

I've come to believe that for the sake of those of us who aren't in the inner circle, a little more transparency in terms of the thought process and backchannel communication would not only be a good thing, but in keeping with the high level of transparency that the SFW Network aspires to. :)

Hot Topics In Neuropsychology by PlayGtr990in AcademicPsychology

[–]subtextual 7 points8 points ago

Health psychology focuses on the impact of physical health on psychological health (and vice versa). A health psychologist might provide therapy to help a person cope with the emotional stress of having cancer, or lead a support group that teaches strategies like relaxation for managing chronic pain, or do a research project designed to determine what interventions help people with diabetes adhere to their diet and medication regimens.

Neuropsychology focuses on brain-behavior relationships. A neuropsychologist wants to know how normal and abnormal brain structure and/or brain functioning affect a person's thinking, behavior, and emotions. A neuropsychologist might conduct research studies on people with a specific brain injury to better determine what the injured part of the brain does, or might study non-brain-injured people to better understand what is happening in the brain when the average person is trying to pay attention or remember something. A lot of neuropsychologists spend most of their time evaluating people who either have a known brain injury, or who are having a cognitive/learning or emotional/behavioral problem that might be related to how their brains developed. When neuropsychology focuses on medical disorders, the focus is specifically on how the disorder affects neurocognitive functioning (e.g., how Alzheimer's affects memory; how epilepsy affects attention), rather than focusing on how having a medical disorder affects a person's quality of life (which is what a health psychologist would focus on).

If you'd like more information about neuropsychology, stop on over to /r/neuropsychology! Although I mostly just post recent, open-access articles on topics of neuropsychological interest, questions are certainly welcome. Bonus: you might see a recent article over there that sparks your interest and leads to a project topic.

Official Vote Thread: Induction of /r/CarPorn into the network, and modification of /r/MachinePorn's ruleset. by syncreticin PornOverlords

I guess I assumed this was the kind of thing y'all discussed on IRC.

Official Vote Thread: Induction of /r/CarPorn into the network, and modification of /r/MachinePorn's ruleset. by syncreticin PornOverlords

[–]subtextual 3 points4 points ago

I absolutely agree that there should have been a discussion thread before this vote. I erroneously assumed that the people who would have significant opinions about this (e.g., /r/MachinePorn mods; those of you who mod a ton of SFW Porn subreddits) were generally in agreement about this since it was being put to a vote, and since I don't care one way or another I wanted to support whatever the principle parties involved wanted.

There is clearly a need for serious discussion before this is voted on, so I'd like to retract my vote, and echo others' suggestions for more discussion before a vote on this.
