Presumably the same way the North Koreans do.

You're free to make a fool of yourself by using the term anarchism, and we are free to mock you in the same way that we'd mock the various People's Democratic Republics of the world.

The compulsory education system is designed to produce these psychological results: http://www.newciv.org/whole/schoolteacher.txt

Good people wait for an expert to tell them what to do. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that our entire economy depends upon this lesson being learned.

The first time I read this essay and grasped its truth, I was angry for days.

What's your favorite "Timmy" card? by thedoorstopin magicTCG

[–]steven_h 1 point2 points ago

That's a good find. Does German use a masculine pronoun to describe organisms that do not have a sex, or does it really use a neuter one?

The most correct English pronoun for Emrakul is clearly "it," but if we're going to pick a gender anyway, it seems like "she" is the one more supported by lore.

Seems like you could write a very short program (or have one written) to generate packs from a card list.

The whole point of the Zendikar block was the discovery that the ancient gods were actually Eldrazi titans.

[–]steven_h 5 points6 points ago

Because that's what the people on Zendikar called her. http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/riseoftheeldrazi/flavor3

Loosely corresponding to Emeria, the wind goddess of the merfolk, Emrakul is the largest and most fearsome of the Eldrazi.

If you read Chris Date's recent books, he denies that this is the case. It was a dogma adopted by database educators that was never really examined thoroughly. An array is just as legitimate of a data type as a string is.

You're correct that using an array to store multiple values of a domain is problematic, but array columns actually contain a single value of array type. Often your application isn't looking to use an array type, but sometimes it is.

The new thinking among the relational database practitioners is that every relation is trivially in first normal form.

My advice is to learn SQL and Excel very well. A lot of non-programmer jobs (usually entitled Database Analyst or Business Analyst) are actually very technical if done right. You will also probably avoid most of the "5+ year Java experience" snobs. (I hate those postings because they always hire the guy with the same year of "experience" five times, instead of someone like you.)

Recommended lisps for newbies? by mcandrein lisp

The common response at this point is to point out all of the popular de facto single-implementation languages out there, like Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, Objective-C, and C#. Ports or reimplementations of these languages are generally measured against the original implementation rather than some language standard.

Choosing a single Scheme implementation is donning a pair of golden handcuffs, but so is choosing one of those other languages.

I get annoyed when I'm playing against someone who plays aggressive counter, mass removal, or mill, but that's because I prefer to play casually and aggressive players/decks are missing the point of casual play.

That doesn't seem fair to players who like those kinds of decks. If it's a friendly game, why not ask them "please don't play that deck" once in a while, and also accommodate them when they ask you not to play your favorite deck?

I get annoyed when I'm playing against someone who plays aggressive counter, mass removal, or mill, but that's because I prefer to play casually and aggressive players/decks are missing the point of casual play.

That doesn't really seem fair to the people who play those decks for fun. What's "casual" play can vary from person to person. If it's a friendly game, shouldn't you just be able to ask them "please don't play that deck" once in a while, and also accommodate them when they ask you not to play whatever deck you're favoring?
