Can't decide. Spyderco Military or BM 710 by matthabitatin knives

[–]steeef 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to give you yet another option, but have you looked at the BM 710-2 in m390 steel? I just bought this and it's a very nice knife with steel that should hold an edge even longer than s30v.

Relative line numbers in Vim for super-fast movement by jkreeftmeijerin vim

[–]steeef 0 points1 point ago

I've found that with EasyMotion I don't really need relative line numbers, "set number" does just fine.

Seconding the vundle recommendation. I was using a separate script to manage Pathogen-loaded bundles as git submodules, but vundle takes care of all of that for you.

Steve's vimrc reads like a book, though. You can see where he's remapped things when he figures out how to simplify a command, or change mappings to suit his usage style.

There's definitely a lot of nice tweaks that I've adopted in my own vimrc.

In the spirit of sharing and being addicted to tweaking my vimrc, I tried your approach. I noticed that when I had all (or some) of the colorschemes I listed, the colors I ended up with were a mix of all of them. My guess is that some schemes don't define all possible colors. I'll definitely reuse "silent!" elsewhere, but I think I'll stick with try/catch blocks for this one.

I like using try/catch to load colorschemes. This block attempts to load solarized, but loads molokai if that's not available. You could nest further for other schemes:

try
    colorscheme solarized
catch /^Vim\%((\a\+)\)\=:E185/
    colorscheme molokai
endtry

Constantly playing with this. Stole a lot from stevelosh (thanks, Steve!): https://github.com/steeef/dotfiles/blob/master/vimrc

EDIT: I should note that I use this on a lot of different systems, being a Linux sysadmin. Often I've got just the .vimrc file and no plugins, or an older version of Vim. I've spent a lot of time adding tests for specific versions or tests for loaded plugins and environments (e.g., Windows, GUI). It's working well for me on CentOS boxes I ssh into, an Arch Linux VM I run on my laptop, and Gvim in Windows.

Buy a new dice bag, get a pokey thing free! (Benchmade 710) by weirdwunin knives

[–]steeef 1 point2 points ago

There is. It's significantly more expensive (~$150), but for a great design with M390 steel, I think it's worth it. I'll be picking this one up shortly...

Benchmade 710 vs 940, or alternatives. by Aederrexin knives

[–]steeef 1 point2 points ago

I've got a 940 and love it, but keep in mind that that the 710 also comes in m390 steel, which should be more rust-resistant than D2: http://www.knifeworks.com/benchmademchenrywilliamsaxislockm390steelplainedgeknifeworksexclusive.aspx

Started collecting a couple of months ago. Here's my small collection. What should I add? by Archerinoin knives

[–]steeef 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I started with a Persistence, but the more expensive ones are tempting. I'm not a big fan of Spyderco's look, but you can't argue with their usefulness.

How about a Spyderco with better steel, like the Delica 4?

I use this gsm modem with Nagios, works pretty well. Note that it'll only send sms/text messages.

If you want phone calls, I hear Pager Duty works pretty well.

Do you administer a helpdesk website? by toiletscribblein sysadmin

[–]steeef 2 points3 points ago

Are we talking strictly documentation for end users or are you including ticket tracking?

We use Confluence for the former and Jira for the latter. They're fairly expensive, but I work for a software developer, so having Jira's development tracking capabilities was a must. I created a separate workflow and project to track Helpdesk tickets.

Home/Personal networking device brand preference? by ohplesin networking

[–]steeef 0 points1 point ago

Odd, I've never had issues with Linksys, and now Cisco's Linksys-branded devices. That could be because one of the first things I always do is replace the stock firmware with Tomato or DD-WRT.

I'm running a Linksys E3000 as my home router with DD-WRT on it, and I've had no issues since booting it up.

Chairs! Does a good one exist? by UnoriginalGuyin sysadmin

[–]steeef 2 points3 points ago

I did this about 6 months ago and I wouldn't go back. I still have a chair, but it's a tall drafting chair (random one from Staples) that I use to take breaks from standing.

Pretty good. Keeps the Juice out of the way when I'm grabbing something else out of the same pocket.

Steve Rice on Bladeforums. I originally ordered it for my Mini Grips, but it fits the 940 just fine.

The Persistence? I bought it because I wanted to try out the Spyderco's blade and handle style. I still can't get over the look though. I prefer Benchmade's style.

Grab a Mini Griptilian. For ~$60 it's a bargain, especially considering the type of steel, blade shape, and handle.

It was twice as expensive as any knife I had bought before, but considering they were all CRKT and Gerber with crappy steel, it was a great purchase.

The downside is that the Griptilian is a gateway drug. Once I could justify $60 for a knife, I could bump that up to $100, then $150...

Here's a link to a few more pictures: http://imgur.com/a/hw2eL

On the top is a Spyderco Ladybug2 in ZDP-189.

From left to right:

  1. CRKT K.I.S.S. (oldest knife of the bunch, bought for the neat design, not very useful)
  2. Spyderco Persistence
  3. Benchmade 556 Mini-Grip (first Benchmade!)
  4. Benchmade 558 Doug Ritter RSK MK 1 Mini-Grip (love the blade on this one)
  5. Benchmade 940 Osbourne (my current EDC, modified with a deep pocket clip)

As you can probably tell, Benchmades are my favorite. Not a big fan of the Spyderco design, but I can certainly see their practicality. I spent some Christmas money on that 940, and I love it.

I've been trying to get knives in different steel, and so far I think S30V is my favorite, though I haven't had them that long. I'm now fighting the urge to get a Bone Collector in D2.

Nice clip. The Smart Money Clip has two sides, one a regular money clip, one side for sliding in credit cards. My problem is that I have too many cards (ID cards, keycard etc.) than will fit in just this thing, hence the separate leather card holder.

None yet, but I'll give some a shot.

It's a TEC Accessories P-7 Suspension Clip. Purchased here: http://edcforums.com/content.php/168-TEC-Accessories-P-7-Suspension-Clip

Spendy, but I was tired of digging in my pockets for my keys and my multitool.

Good question. Just assumed it'd been updated similarly to the 12c. That's kind of frustrating.
