It was a tough subject.

#72: House of Cards by spikebaylorin PictureChallenge

[–]spikebaylor[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm extremely new to photography. I've mostly carried a P&S with me when I travel for work which led to me wanting to get better at photography so I could come home with better photos.

This is my first submission to picturechallenge and I'm hoping to use it for inspiration to have things to shoot each week instead of letting my camera sit around until my next trip. So any constructive criticism (or praise if its warranted) would be awesome. Thanks!

Yeah i'd love to have shown more cards and that was my original idea. Apparently though, I"m HORRIBLE at building card houses!

As for the spades being the only things showing, that was on accident. I built and (accidentally) destroyed the thing so many times that what cards were facing out never crossed my mind, but I never even thought about B&W, thanks for the suggestion!

Not normally my style of music, but it goes perfectly with chino's voice.

the whole time I read that I was thinking, man this started out as such a well written plea for spoiler tags, and then continued to degrade into 6th grade. And then, username.

Do you decide whether you like a song after one listen? Or do you have to listen to a song multiple times to decide? by Baconmusubiin progmetal

[–]spikebaylor 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, i rarely ever dismiss anything my interest fades from. I just find when listening to a new album, that the songs I immediately attach to, tend to end up somewhere in the middle of the pack after multiple listens. But these songs are important, as they give me a reason to listen to the album multiple times to begin with.

fair enough. I would definitely agree that "never" is a bit harsh. You are correct there are plenty of times when crazy things can catch people off balance.

And don't misunderstand me, I think Capoeira as a whole can actually be a contender in a lot of ways. Its not Capoeira specifically i'm talking about, but more of the show boating moves which every discipline has. I've practiced with a few Capoeiristas who I would not want to f with in any case. They know what they're doing, and they also know when NOT to do try to be flashy.

Ive seen a few really good capoeira fights in a mma setting, and the thing that sets them apart is usually the lack of showing off. There is plenty of moves in capoeira meant to trick or distract an opponent that are not so obviously over the top.

While i love Capoeira, to be fair, neither of these would be useful in a real fight either. In a roda with some friends sure.

Spring 2012 CS Foundation Exam by senatorpjtin ucf

[–]spikebaylor 3 points4 points ago

I think you might possibly be the first person in history to feel more confident about discrete than CS :)

I took the exam eh... a long time ago. I was 100% confident in anything they could throw at me in CS, but holy crap did discrete scare me. I think I got fairly lucky and the discrete questions they did put on the test just happen to click in my head, but to this day I still curse the name "discrete structures" (although big discrete seemed way more useful).

What is one band you believe are over-rated and one band you think are under-rated? by Re-Definein progmetal

[–]spikebaylor 4 points5 points ago

I think one of the reasons why Tool is so loved is because of their ability to be popular. What I mean is, out of all the bands in this thread, Tool is probably the most known. There is a LOT to be said about a band who is played on the radio, and yet is so obviously in another league compared to the normal garbage. They walk a very fine line between accessible and technical.

I've actually found lately that a lot of the songs that i end up liking on the first listen, start to fade quickly behind the songs that i like after multiple listens.

The save icon is a floppy disk and everyone still understands the "roll down the windows" gesture. What are other things that refer to obsolete practices, yet still understood today? by Sati1984in AskReddit

rewinding is fine, as long as you're not one of those people who gets to the end of the movie, and rewinds it all the way back to the start before returning to redbox.

I've had a hard time getting into any of their albums since 6 degrees, mostly because of the wankery, especially with JR. This all makes me really sad because of course the first time I heard JR and JP play together was Liquid Tension Experiment, which was phenomenal and didn't suffer quite so bad from what they've put out recently in DT.

[–]spikebaylor 0 points1 point ago

I had read this and gave a random song a listen to. While I liked the music, I couldn't really get into the singer. I really enjoy the guy from TRoK's voice, it goes perfectly with the sound they have. It is interesting listening to the band play a different sound though. Maybe i'll give them another shot sometime when i'm not looking for another TRoK.

Figured i'd thrown in a second for Pictures in Sound :D, and Karnivool. Not sure Karnivool comes to mind with the bands listed, but damnit if they're not one of my current favorites.

If you find anything even remotely similar to The Reign of Kindo, please let me know. I've had a few suggestions but nothing that quite matches their style.

Actually Orlando almost always ranks in the top 10 worst cities for murder. Maybe its not as bad for some of the lesser crimes.

I sometimes wish Jekyll was just a tad bit longer, the guy who played him was so convincing at being two different people, and at times it was such an immediate change it was shocking.

Also, seriously Sherlock, watch it.

Taken with P&S, Have DSLR now, what things should i do/look for to make shots like this better? Particularly in regards to the light coming over the Pali. by spikebaylorin photography

[–]spikebaylor[S] 0 points1 point ago

I wasn't asking for a critique, I was asking for advice on how to shoot a specific shot.

[–]spikebaylor[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks so much for your help. I do a decent amount of landscape shots, mostly because i get to travel a lot for my job and am lucky enough to get to see interesting places like this.

Recently I finally decided it would be a good time to take photography a little more serious and bought a DSLR. I've already learned a ton and can't wait to learn more. Now if only i could go back in time to retake some shots :)
