I stumbled across this accidentally the other day and couldn't remember last night how the hell to do it. Thanks!

At the risk of being 'that guy' I'm going to emphasise the importance of keeping a redundant backup of critical data. Glad that you've dodged a bullet here and haven't learnt the hard way, but it could just as well have been the HDD that died.

Gotye tops US music chart! by pensivepenguinin australia

[–]soupeh 1 point2 points ago

Seriously. Big fan of both Gotye and Karnivool, and their cover of The Only Way I hesitate to admit I like even more than the original.
Had the pleasure of seeing them do it live in Melb and Wally come out on stage to sing it with Ian.

Wow you're so inappropriate and edgy. I, for one, am both really impressed and very outraged.

A friend of mine had this exact operation performed a couple of months ago. I'm not sure which vertebrae, but he has virtually the exact the same scar.
Happy for you mate. Yay science & medicine & awesome surgeons.

I use regular old slinkys on electrics, but on my acoustics I use elixirs.
IMO acoustic guitars suffer quicker from older dull strings. Where I'd be lucky to get a few gigs out of a regular set before they're dead, I'll usually get several months at least out of a set of nanoweb coated. Yeah you can feel and hear a difference, but it's not even bad and the long life is too good to pass up.

I have 16GB RAM and have never maxed it out. Can I turn off paging? by ---in techsupport

It's called 'random access' because it can be accessed at any position in the sequence, as opposed to 'sequential access' media, such as a tape reel.

Somebody please explain Clapton to me by orsini1138in Guitar

[–]soupeh -4 points-3 points ago

I've been wrong with sweeping general assumptions in the past as well.
No i'm not some fan boy. Have seen that dvd before, I think. Heard plenty. Was raised on a solid diet of Clapton by my father who is a career guitarist.
Don't get me wrong I dig Clapton and truly appreciate his influence and legacy. At the same time it's not an uncommonly held opinion that his legendary status overshadows his playing. Mayer is a whole 'nother thing in terms of flat out ability and versatility. Was just stating what I thought. Obviously the wrong thread.

Not really sure what you're saying here mate, but honestly John Mayer's chops blow Clapton out of the water.

That's about where I'm at now, maybe mine is slightly longer. Just gone 6 months, and I'd say that's about average.

Thoughts from My First Gig by [deleted]in Guitar

[–]soupeh 0 points1 point ago

Hey, cheers.
Don't get me wrong, writing original material is hard work and imo probably more rewarding. All that time trying to arrive at creative but likeable stuff. It's more forgiving as far as mistakes/idiosyncrasies, but it's also way more emotionally up in the air to perform your own work to critical audiences. Been there, too.
Hell, I dont even like most of the songs I play. I certainly don't always try and nail parts exactly.
Playing covers is more about providing a entertainment service, and the band as a sum of all parts producing entertaining and up to par renditions. Just shits me when the original scene sling crap at covers bands as though they're even really comparable, and I go on rants.

But whatever man, we're on the same page here. Keep Rockin!

Thoughts from My First Gig by [deleted]in Guitar

[–]soupeh 4 points5 points ago

Standard covers band gig. I do it twice a week.
3 x 45 - 50 min sets, 12 - 15 songs each.

This comment's a bit amusing to me because among the original-music scene, at least around here, there's a real stigma against covers bands and musos in them. Apparently it's selling out & easy to play other people's songs, or not real musicianship, probably mixed with resentment for the amount covers bands get paid, the crowds they get, and the higher demand.
Having played both sides of this fence, I can definitely say that it's every bit as demanding musically, maybe more so when the crowd are familiar with the songs, and the actual gigs are definitely much harder work.
