The effort you put into this is very much appreciated. This sort of thing is one of the reasons I lurk here. You all like to goof around, but you're pros when it comes down to it.

I have two 590s and they choke at 7680x1600. I'll be upgrading to 690s soon but they will still fail at many games at that rez. Enthusiast gaming has always been hardware-limited, I think.

Good price for 580's by Airconaaronin gamingpc

[–]solidus-flux 2 points3 points ago

We don't knock people for going high end around here =)

Your only problem with the 690 right now is availability. I think J&R electronics had some last time I checked (last night).

I have a pair of GTX 590s and am happy with the performance (although I did prefer the ATI drivers over these nvidia ones).

If you were to get a GTX 690 now, you'd have a crazy fast card and could still upgrade to quad sli if you wanted to push 3 big monitors (or a super intense single monitor game) in the future.

7680x1600 is a little underwhelming with 2x GTX 590, but with with two 690s I think it would be satisfactory.

In my opinion, buy the most baddest-ass shit you can afford, if it will make you happy!

Do games that explicitly do NOT support SLI/Crossfire still benefit from multi-GPU cards? Why or why not? by solidus-fluxin gamingpc

Yeah, when Rage first came out and had all those texture problems, the little id fanboy in me began to die. I'd still love to see idTech5 make some great strides, just for the sake of pushing other engines to compete.

Thanks for the info. I think I will go with the two discrete 4870s for now, and see how it goes.

Side note:

I've always assumed that for the most part, SLI and Crossfire were transparent to the game the same way RAID is transparent to an application that needs to read and write from a disk.

But, the idTech5 game Rage does not support multiple GPUs, and Carmack is a smart guy. It seems less likely that he his violating best practices by taking hardware shortcuts and more likely is doing some sophisticated optimization, and / or simply that multiple GPUs are not as transparent an infrastructure as I thought.

Maybe when I go to QuakeCon this year I will ask him =)

I mentioned the special theory of relativity as well, but you win because you provided a video!

Technically he is incorrect. According to the special theory of relativity, objects in non-uniform motion with respect to objects at rest, will "age" less, compared to those objects at rest. His ever moving penis ages at a slower rate.

The age difference would be absolutely minuscule, but we're being "technical" =)

My thoughts exactly. To add a little, AkiMatti could say that in a "Christian Literalists" group and we couldn't touch it, at least in terms of consistency. Christians are all over the map in terms of what they think is acceptable. By not adhering to their doctrine completely, this is a problem they created, not us.

It's actually a little weird that Christians can offend one another with their beliefs, but they can.

Yep. It means whatever they want because they all make it up! It's like the mob or something. You're going to burn in hell (because of us). Coincidentally, we have the solution. All you have to do is what we tell you.

The offer you can't refuse.

I think there's a law that states something like "For every ridiculous thing that Rick Santorum didn't actually say, there is an equally ridiculous thing that he really said."
