Does a person's choice in books say anything about them? What do you think? Can I see your book shelf? by spermracewinnerin books

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

I go to my bookshelves in times of doubt. My books are my sanctuary: when I doubt who I am, my books somehow remind me of my essence. That compilation of books I love triangulates on who I am. However, I cannot photograph my bookshelf as I have a whole room of six foot tall bookshelves- certain ones are more important, though. Some were gifts from my grandfather, personally inscribed for me, and these have the most meaning. He always had a book for everyone, and I try to carry on the tradition.

To continue this beautiful heritage, I keep the belief that loaning a book equates to giving it, and a book given is the most beautiful journey of all for the recipient. I have gifted books in airports, coffee shops, and to my professors' children. I love your bookshelf and recognize many books I have enjoyed amongst your collection. Take care, dear friend, and spread the wealth!

My father woke up everyday at 5am for years. He recently retired, now following his dream. Could you help me return the favor by checking out his song. He is excited about the 30 views it already has, a few more will make his day. by dapper_danin Music

[–]sleeplessgrad 1 point2 points ago

Are you Italian? Weird question, but the song seems to me like a combination of Italian and American influences. It has both an old-world vibe and a jazz hint. Thanks for the pleasure of listening!

Bargaining phrase you should try every time you have to spend money, "I can't pay that." by [deleted]in Frugal

Appreciated as someone owing 17,000 dollars for an emergency and life-saving appendectomy. Still working it out but all will be fine- eventually. Again, thank you for the advice!

We all have a friend who has every book and he's like... by OfThriceAndTenin books

Never lend a book with the expectation of its return (same with money)! I keep extra copies of favorite books to give to strangers and friends and ask them to pass them on to someone else after finishing. I love reading books that others have made notes in- it leaves me feeling as though I have shared the experience :).

How will you celebrate Pi Day with your students? by roger_pctin matheducation

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

We celebrated with pie and had different contests such as repeating pi up to as many digits as we could. To this day I remember certain number patterns though their relations with a series from the first 100 digits of pi.

With my students (6th through 8th grade) we "rediscovered" pi and the central limit theorem by splitting into groups and measuring the circumference and diameter of a series of circles. Then we could use each groups numbers and average them to come up with a class-wide number (as well as accumulate throughout the day for a total class number). With these we could see both pi and that we better approximate it through an increasing number of measurements that can be averaged to reduce error effects. It worked for us :).

Question: What percentage of body fat makes you feel healthiest? by greysandsin Fitness

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

I normally look in a mirror- but I appreciate the advice! I actually can have dramatically different body image reactions day-to-day (i.e., Monday, day x, I think I look awesome but Tuesday, x + 1, I feel fat and disgusting). I used to think I was fat when I was 110 lbs (height 5'5"), size zero pants, and working out three hours a day- so this is just a residual issue. I have looked at pictures from back then and realize that for my frame, that was WAYYYY too small. I currently weigh 130 pounds and wear a size 6 to fit my legs since I have relatively strong legs from biking, running, and dance.

I appreciate your insight; however, I think it is just a reflection of how stressed out I am on any given day as to how I perceive my body. Luckily, my boyfriend tells me daily that I am gorgeous and it helps :).

Question: What percentage of body fat makes you feel healthiest? by greysandsin Fitness

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

I am actually finding that since I took up dance, I can look better with less weight. However, previously I mostly ran and found that I kept no curves when losing weight. The dance moves in salsa gave me hips I was never able to have before :).

[F] I am happiest at ~20% but look way better at ~22%. I know this from looking at pictures but still always want to lose weight :(.

You are never too old. I just got offered what I have worked for years to get. I'm almost 50 and today, I am a scientist. by midlifeisisin TwoXChromosomes

What an amazing story! I need this story right now because I want to be a mathematician. Every night I sit and study from textbooks to try to learn on my own, and sometimes it feels hopeless. I just pray that dedication and hard work will pay off eventually and you give me hope that it will! Thank you for sharing your lovely story and enjoy your success <3

Will someone learn more effectively if they are initially told the subject is easy, or if they are told it is hard? by Jameshfisherin psychology

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

I agree with the study :), I just am a damn psychometrician so I have the habit of arguing the issues within that framework. I entered grad school with the premise that I think expectations matter and I still maintain that. Have a lovely evening!

Side note: I could discuss Cronbach all day, very interesting and I am so sorry that he was slowed down by a disability.

There are a great deal of issues with Rosenthal's study- not the least of which is that many of the teacher's did not even remember the names on the pink sheet of paper which detailed the brilliant students. Furthermore, the IQ test measure was questionable.

However, I do think expectations are very important- after working as a tutor for a long time I have just found that expectations are tempered by reality. The reason I read the initial book? I am five years in to a doctoral program in educational psychology where my initial focus was teacher expectations (currently a psychometrician instead).

Some serious sex-related relationship issues that need to be solved by ThrowAwayqwerqwerin relationship_advice

[–]sleeplessgrad 4 points5 points ago

Alright- FIRST: anti-depressants can lead to a reduced sex drive for both men and women. Reduced but not none- If you make her feel good and up the foreplay, this may get her in the mood; however, the onus of responsibility is on you.

SECOND: Is she body conscious? This may be the issue. I tend to believe that I am fat and it prevents me from wanting le sexy time. My boyfriend's constant reassurance that I am sexy help greatly in this regard.

THIRD: Being able to talk about sex is REALLY important to having a good sex life. Sex is inherently awkward when you dissect it and requires a certain comfort with yourself to enjoy. This is an issue that you all should probably work on to improve your relationship in the long run. I used to be very uncomfortable about discussing sex, and being open about this has greatly improved my enjoyment and my proneness to achieve climax.

I wish you the best of luck and think that learning to discuss things and making sure she is turned on will go a long way to improving your situation! Furthermore, as she improves mentally, the sex life will most likely return to a satisfactory level.

How bad was your roommate? by jaslowin AskReddit

[–]sleeplessgrad 0 points1 point ago

My ex-roommate brought home some guy from a bar and his friend. Well turns out his friend JUST got out of prison and snuck into my room/sexually assaulted me while I was sleeping (been through therapy- all good now).

Best part is that when the cops came, my roommate stripped off all of her clothes and ran to the refrigerator where she promptly opened and downed a beer. Then she started wailing and became inconsolable. Reason strange guy was wandering our house?? She was having sex with guy number one in her bedroom and left strange just got out of prison guy to wander around unsupervised. Anyways, she has been known as the flash in the police station ever since and scared the crap out of their deputy.

Oh, then she decided to stomp on a painting I inherited from my grandfather while she was drunk. She broke the frame and fucked it up.

Note: not all people who just get out of prison are aiming to assault people. This guy just happened to not be a very good person. I recognize it as a specific person, but as a woman- you may not want to bring that person home from a bar and then leave them unattended with two female roommates sleeping. You really shouldn't do that with any stranger.

TL:DR: Ex-Roommate now nicknamed "the flash" at the police station.

Glad you already edited this and let us know you went. I want to let you know how proud I am of you and how strong you are. I have been in a very similar position and I am sending my love.

It is very hard right now . . . sleep is probably going to be damn near impossible; however, you will get through this and be stronger for it. I STRONGLY recommend seeing a therapist. Please do this as soon as possible, it will help you not feel like a piece of garbage. This is in no way your fault and it takes other people to help you through this.

PM me, I beg you. I have been there including police visits, evidence collection, et cetera. I am more than happy to talk to you on the phone. This is a really hard time but it WILL get better. HUGS!
