TROPHY CASE

Lose more fat or aim for hypertrophy? by rookayyyin Fitness

[–]silverhydra 3 points4 points ago

The true answer is 'whichever you are more motivated to do', given that a wishy-washy "I want both" is not a valid answer. If you can choose between the dichotomy of bulk or cut, then you know where your priorities lie and where your motivation will be.

If you want my opinion, cut. If you don't have access to the gym but 'plan on introducing weights...in the future' then it would be best to hold off any bulking attempts until you get some heavy weights. Cut by process of elimination, or at least recomp with a focus on fat loss.

Can you have too many vitamins / minerals? by workoutnewbin Fitness

[–]silverhydra 4 points5 points ago

Biotin is not a vitamin you need to worry much about dietary or supplemental overdose.

The ones you need to be cautious of mostly are Vitamin A (animal based 'retinol' rather than plant based 'carotenoids'), Vitamin E, and most dietary minerals. The ones I didn't mention tend to need so much to OD on that its very rare that it would happen.

But yes, every molecule in existence will have some eventual toxicity level. You can have 'too much' of anything.

FUCK ME. I’ve been doing heavy squats lately and yesterday I was diagnosed with “Hemorrhoid Thrombosis”. How do I keep it from happening again??? by krakow057in Fitness

[–]silverhydra 34 points35 points ago

Squat with your glutes; not your anus.

This problem is much more likely to stem from a low fiber diet and straining yourself on the toilet rather than squats.

Reduce blood pressure overall, have a more fiberful diet and perhaps some psyllium husk or senna root, and don't squat with your rectal sphincter.

This is like a /b/ thread where eventually everything just becomes a combination of the word 'nigger', except with fat.

I'm 5 11, about 205. If I could bench press my body weight many times, would I be huge? Dunno if I want that... [SL5x5] by brotherwaynein Fitness

[–]silverhydra 11 points12 points ago

Doing 205 for 5x5 is only going to result in bigger muscles than your 'goal' if its an overhead press and done routinely for a year or three, you need much heavier weights for other movements.

[–]silverhydra 46 points47 points ago

Stop worrying about this shit; if you ever wake up in the morning and decide you don't want to get bigger then stop.

Worrying about getting too huge now is akin to "but what if I earn 10 million dollars? How will I keep all the bitches off my dick" when you work at McDonalds.

Did you intentionally mean to insult my field and work or are you a natural at being augmentative?

Seems reasonable.

Its sad though; I was looking into supplements to aid the tolerance aspect by shortening the time it takes to return to baseline (because why not?) and the only thing I could find leads on was the pharmaceutical Memantine. :(

I don't know the 'true' reason they banned it (ie. what the FDA claims), but factors that contributed to it were:

  • Oh noes it is an amphetamine!

  • Oh noes, it can be used as susbtrate to cook meth! (This is actually the main reason you never see bulk ephedrine online)

  • Oh noes, a fat baseball player died of heat exhaustion after 20 confounding variables and the perfect storm of retardation hit; gasp, Xenadrine was one of those factors and clearly the isolated cause of death

  • Then, magically, the FDA gets flooding with 'adverse effects' after the above story hit the media. Social Panic much?

Not bitter at all or anything

It's either a testament to the adaptability of human enzymes, or a faulty test; probably the former, since I'm optimistic and seen the variance that aromatase can undergo.

Did caffeine trip you the hell out when you first had it? Perhaps you still have the slow metabolizing polymorphism, but just a shit-ton of them.

Apparently there are tests that measure the metabolites of caffeine and caffeine itself, and then measure the ratio between them. A high caffeine:paraxanthine ratio means a slow aromatase enzyme, which is quinessential of a 'slow caffeine metabolizer'. I think saliva tests may be sufficient, but I am not sure.

Otherwise, 23andme (a company specilizing in genetic mapping) measures polymorphisms of the aromatase enzyme among a bunch of other things and could be worth looking into.

You can potentially induce the activity of aromatase with some nutraceuticals, but that is usually the opposite of what many people want since aromatase also converts testosterone into estrogen. Its a pro-estrogenic effect.

It loses efficacy on the dopaminergic pathway (re: signalling) with tolerance, hence why its never been implicated in the 'gotta suck some dick for coffee' aspect of addiction.

[–]silverhydra[S] 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, that is probably solely through the ability to do more work. I imagine that if a study were conducted on intense music it would show the same results.

12-15% increases in test, given its variability already, isn't too impressive.

Yeah, I guess I should move that tag to coffee rather than caffeine since caffeine is a crystalline white powder.
