[MAP] San Francisco Rental Prices Wwwaayy Up in Every Neighborhood You Want to Live In by kevinmontyin sanfrancisco

[–]silasmoon 2 points3 points ago

This is getting pretty insane. I am moving out at the end of May, and everyday I re-run my finances to see if I can afford to live in this city. Jesus, is it even worth it?

Moving to SF still, and this guy finally went down to $450. You think I should get it? Things to look out for?

Mountain View, but I'll be riding a shuttle. The commute doesn't bother me.

Really? I have been finding places for like $1,600 that are lofts. Are these all just scams?

As a transplant heading to SF in two weeks to look for housing, you basically described my philosophy of looking for places. I'm 23, and have $1,500 to find a loft. I would be eager to hear your advice.

Clothing care: Are all irons created equal? by develdevilin malefashionadvice

[–]silasmoon 2 points3 points ago*

I am by no means an expert, but I am a bachelor! My mother works for a sewing magazine and has worked with textiles her entire life. When I asked her the same question, she told me to just get a $20 iron from Wal-Mart that had adjustable heat and steam options. The biggest thing to be aware of is how hot your iron is so you don't damage certain materials.

She has a giant professional iron in her workshop with a water tank connected to it so she can iron endlessly for hours while she works. It heats up in about two seconds and is heavy duty stainless steel.

Let me see if I can find this super awesome ASMR ironing video for you:

This is my technique

Keep in mind also that a lot of materials don't need be laundered as much as you think. Spot cleaning goes a long way. Also, never dry your clothes in the dryer, it drastically reduces their lifespan. That fuzz in the lint trap is from your clothes!

Time-Lapse of Houston Critical Mass April ~ 600 participants by ntrpikin bicycling

Ah okay, I can agree with that. Yes, sporadic riding or riding in clear violation of traffic regulations is more of a safety concern than whether or not someone is wearing a helmet. I am very very new to riding, and I am astounded by the negligence some bicyclists exhibit whilst riding.

Time-Lapse of Houston Critical Mass April ~ 600 participants by ntrpikin bicycling

I am biased I guess. My father is a neurologist and I have heard of so many accidents where a bicyclist, motorcyclist, skier, etc. wasn't wearing a helmet and is either dead or sustained serious head trauma that could have otherwise been prevented.

Also, when I was about fifteen I was cruising down a hill on my bike. I hit a patch of sand and gravel from a house that was being built and flew off my bike, with my head slamming right into the corner of a brick mailbox. My helmet look like someone hit it with an axe. I walked away, and had a lot of appreciation for my helmet.

Another one of my friends was riding and hit a bad patch on a sidewalk and went over his handlebars and woke up in an ambulance. Again, his helmet saved his life.

I guess you could also make the argument that if you knew how to drive you shouldn't wear seat belts, because knowing how to drive is what matters most. Accidents happen and wearing a helmet is a little bit of insurance against head injuries. I can't think of a compelling reason to NOT wear a helmet.

[Wanted] Wardrobe moving boxes by redboxblueboxin HoustonClassifieds

[–]silasmoon 0 points1 point ago

Most moving companies have them for free if you ask actually. A protip is to use those vacuum bags and compress all your clothes, bedding, towels, etc. down and you can fit like 20x more stuff in a box. Wardrobe boxes are big and take up space = higher moving costs. A ton of vacuum bags from Amazon is like $20.
