Oh I do say...It is quite the lovely day... by BlueChainsawManin funny

That looks like the Athlone Cooling Towers in Cape Town.

A guy I know used to be a taxi driver in the early 80's. He'd often pick up tourists from the airport and bring them to the city, which meant he'd have to drive past those towers. One day a few Texan tourists were remarking about how poor some of the non-white communities and townships on the side of the freeway looked, and said that the apartheid government should do more to help them. He pointed to the cooling towers:

"You see those big grey things there? Those are giant soup pots. You won't find them anywhere else in the world. Every month they cook millions of liters of soup that is distributed for free to the poorer communities."

They believed him.

Deadpool vs. Batman. Who would win. GO! by saywhat181in comics

Both Albert Wesker and Ironman activated their hyper moves at the same time. The Wesker player notices this, and cancels Wesker's hyper move into Deadpool's Level 3 hyper move (this is called a Delayed Hyper Combo - DHC). This is what causes Wesker to switch out and Deadpool to come in. The Wesker player has Deadpool on the same team.

This particular hyper move of Deadpool's is actually a counter meant to catch physical attacks, but it doesn't work on projectiles like Ironman's beam. As for what happens next, I'm not sure if it's the glitch that makes certain characters invulnerable to beams when you switch them in using their level 3 hyper moves, or if it's just because Deadpool was too far "behind" the beam for it to hit him (if you look closely at the GIF you can see Deadpool is actually walking behind the barrel of the gun where the beam can't hit him). When both players' hyper moves end, Deadpool recovers faster which allows him to grab Ironman (pins his feet with swords and shoots him in the face).

How safe is Obs? by bigray345in capetown

[–]shenglong 2 points3 points ago

Go here:

http://www.turnitaround.co.za/crime_map

Select "Western Province" and search for "Observatory". This should show you the crime map for the area. You can also filter the data to only show crimes you're interested in. (I think there was only one mugging reported in the area for that time period).

Here's an Excel spreadsheet of the data:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14639607/Feb%20Obs%20Crime.xls

IMO, Obs isn't dangerous per se, but you do have to keep your wits about you, just like with any other place. Most of the crimes are drug-related (people getting caught buying/selling) and house/car breaking.

Nah you're fine if you stick to the beaches on the Atlantic coast. The water is too cold for sharks. You wanna stay away from the False Bay beaches though.

The guy's got a nice smile and looks friendly but honestly I don't know what the fuss is all about. Not hating, was just a bit confused by some of these memes I was seeing. I thought the background story would be bigger than a dude looking good in a random photo.

Get over yourself. I was also turned away from many different places because of "Private Functions" or not having a membership or whatever, in this country and others. In fact, I (and the five other WHITE people in front of me) couldn't get into Asoka on Friday. Something about needing to have made a reservation beforehand or whatever. I thought it was a BS excuse, and they probably just wanted to keep more space available for Jazz Fest VIPs but whatever. I could have made a scene and complained, or make a phone call and gotten inside anyway, but it's just a club and it's really not that big of a deal. But if you actually knew anything about the place you'd know that the crowd is in fact very diverse, with some really cool people, and other pretentious twats of all races who like to be seen sipping on expensive bottles alcohol that they don't even like, and everyone else in between. Just like many other places in CPT. And just like any of those venues, the odds if someone getting in who doesn't fit the profile of what the owner wants his venue to be associated with is probably not very high. I'm not making excuses for the venue (because for all I know the owners, staff and clientele might be incredibly racist), I'm just telling you how it is right now.

PS. If you think that people don't complain about other places in town then you are most certainly out of the loop. Snotty people will just tend to complain about the more popular venues. Spend some time on HelloPeter and marvel at the amount of petty BS that people spend their time complaining about because their fragile egos can't handle rejection.

More than 8 500 acid attacks, forced marriages and other forms of violence against women were reported in Pakistan in 2011. Because the group relied mostly on media reports, the figure is likely an undercount. by shenglongin worldnews

[–]shenglong[S] 2 points3 points ago

I think it's disingenuous to lump acid attacks and "other forms of violence against women" with forced marriages (especially considering that many womeon over there consider it a way of life) with but it's a terrible statistic nonetheless.

I mean, should we lump every beating, mugging or murder of males separately just because they are males?

A lot of people confuse the superficial way Capetonians (well, people in general) think with racism. Cape Town is all about the cool and trendy Zeitgeist. You can look like something the cat dragged in, but if it's stylish or trendy, you're good in their books.

The same friend I'm talking about in my original post always complained about this. He says sometimes he can see a guy has style even though his hair is a mess and is wearing a faded t-shirt, torn jeans and old sneakers. But then you have another guy wearing the same thing, but he just doesn't pull the look off, and he knows his other clients are going to notice and complain so he is forced to deny this person entry. But the problem is, how does he explain to this person that he just doesn't look cool or stylish enough for the rest of his clientele? It's not easy, so in many cases he just says nothing. And more often than not it leads to cries of racism.

Simple rule of thumb in Cape Town: Whenever you think you're experiencing racism while you're out partying, you're not. And it's probably because you just don't look cool enough. It's stupid and superficial, but luckily people have the right to avoid these places and spend their money elsewhere.

Mr Chan's in Sea Point has the best Chinese food in the city. It even beats most restaurants in Asia.

A Tavola in Claremont has good traditional Italian food. Magica Roma also gets good reviews.

Willoughby's on the Waterfront has the best sushi.

Check out Cold Turkey @ Amadoda for something with a more local flavour and vibe, and obviously there's also Mzoli's which is very popular on a Sunday.
