African Americans living in Australia, how does the racial climate make you feel? by liveandletlovein australia

[–]schnitzi 58 points59 points ago

I'm an American, who's lived in Melbourne now for eight years. I've gotten no flack for being American, other than a bit of teasing for how I pronounce things.

Back when Bush was still in office, when people heard I was American they would always seem to be careful about how they asked -- "So, what do you think of this Bush guy as president?" and then relaxed when I said he was an idiot.

Today my girlfriend told me that she would never have kids with a guy with tattoos because she doesn't want her kids born with the tattoos of the father, as if they were passed genetically. My roommate in college tried to tell me that basketball players, when they jumped, had a hang time of four or five seconds.

"So, as long as, like, a punt in football?" I asked.

"Yep."

"But the laws of physics --"

"They don't apply here!"

Idiot.

Nikola Tesla Wasn't God And Thomas Edison Wasn't The Devil by DisgruntledAlpacain geek

Huzzah. The cult around Tesla is really offputting. There's a similar one around Jules Verne that I can't stand.

Would we be able to think without knowing any languages? by xX5xin AskReddit

[–]schnitzi 1 point2 points ago

I was raised bilingual. To this day, when my mom talks to me and I pause to consider what language she spoke to me in, I have no idea.

Similarly, though probably somewhat less interestingly, I'm an American living in Australia for the past eight years, and nowadays I often have to pause to consider which accent a person is talking to me in - both American and Australian seem natural and I don't automatically note which is occurring.

What's your favorite Homer Simpson quote? by Nkliphin AskReddit

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

Definitely my favorite -- from the Gabbo episode. Homer and Bart have completely fallen for the teaser advertisements Gabbo was using to create a buzz for the show. Finally the night arrives.

Bart: "I can't believe it. Our first glimpse of Gabbo!"

Homer: "He'll tell us what to do."

[Java] - Importing Morse code text file to convert sentence to morse by tmoss726in reviewmycode

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

Okay, this is a little bizarre, but your code doesn't compile. Did you possible type it in from another source?

Anyway I fixed it up so it compiles, and here's my comments...

  1. Hardcode the translations as part of this class instead of in a separate file. They aren't likely to ever change, and it makes it so all the logic is contained in one place. I can't really run this without the morse.txt file. I would use a HashMap<Character,String>, and add all the codes (e.g. map.add('c', "-.-.");). That way you don't have to loop through your lookup to find the translation -- you just do map.get(c).

  2. "Character" is a bad variable name as it's the name of another fundamental Java class, and it's capitalized where your other fields aren't.

  3. There's no need for the morseBuffer array -- just build the completed string as you go. Create a StringBuilder, then loop through your input string and call builder.append(map.get(sentence.charAt(index))) or builder.append(" "). And at the end just return builder.toString().

  4. The processLine method is useless -- it could be replaced with value.substring(2).

What is one simple change/thing you started doing that has made a large impact on your life? by rjraitin AskReddit

I don't really know what migraines[*] feel like, but yeah, a few doctors suggested that it might be migraines when I described the symptoms to them. I didn't agree, though (since I thought they were just post-traumatic), so I didn't pursue that route.

[*] I do actually get visual migraines, but so far they've been painless! They seem unrelated to the other headaches I got from the neck strain.

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

Mostly just by mentally screaming at myself whenever I caught myself doing it in the middle of the night.

A rubber band on your wrist that you snap when you catch yourself might work too. I've heard some people also put a tennis ball or something in their shirt so they get immediate feedback when they roll onto their stomach.

[–]schnitzi 64 points65 points ago

I had terrible headaches for ten years, behind my eye and up the back of my head, that were very dependent on the angle that I held my head. I thought for years it was some post-traumatic thing, after "ringing my bell" really bad snowboarding, around the time when it all started.

Finally a doctor suggested that it was only neck strain, and suggested I stop sleeping on my stomach. So I retrained myself to sleep on my side and my problem is suddenly all fixed. This makes me beyond happy!

The funny thing is, if a girl ever told me we had to break up because an online quiz said we aren't compatible, she'd be exactly right.

Exactly - this is the proper counter to anyone who says gays are seeking "special rights" by being allowed to marry the same sex. They are seeking a new right for everyone, not just gays.

What is the most interesting historical book that you have ever read? by katieyain history

[–]schnitzi 0 points1 point ago

I would say --

  1. Eyewitness To History - nothing but live accounts by people who witnessed historical events.

  2. Viktor Klemperer's diaries, as a Jew living in Nazi Germany. There are three volumes, starting with I Will Bear Witness. These are astounding.
