My mom painted the entire book of "Where The Wild Things Are" on our playroom walls about 15 years ago... Every page is roughly a 5 foot section of the wall... by Noobricornin pics

If I had kids I would totally want to do this. Tell your mom she is an amazing artist/mom. :)

Pro-life ladies, are there any circumstances under which you would be willing to get an abortion? (Questions for pro-life and choice in text.) by Poe4Shoin TwoXChromosomes

[–]scarlet-agate 1 point2 points ago

As a general observation of this thread I find it interesting how people give their opinions and state what their positions are, and then others have to come in and correct them. And by correct them I mean say that they shouldn't call themselves pro-life/pro-choice based on something said. I just want to know why the correct specific title matters so much? If someone wants to have one stance for how they would handle their life and yet have the opposing stance for what they think would be best for everyone else then oh well. The whole point is to have the ability to decide what matters to you. /rant

Should I tell my parents about my blood test? by ABThrowawayOin AskReddit

[–]scarlet-agate 3 points4 points ago

THANK YOU! I went through this thread hoping to find someone that would mention this. We read a case study about this in college (I'm a med tech) and it was almost the exact same situation as what the OP is describing. Mother is O, child was AB. Turns out it was a cis-AB.

I just recently watched your performance at Beacon Theatre, and it made me laugh harder than I have in a long time, so thanks. :) I especially laughed at the description of the little shit-head boy in your daughter's class. Do you think his parents have seen your bit and know that you're talking about them?

A public schoolgirl who died from a brain hemorrhage at 13 has saved eight lives by donating her organs. by nomdewebin worldnews

By beating heart cadaver I was referring to people who are brain dead but all their other organ systems are still functioning. I think that makes it somewhat difficult to determine actual death when that situation arises because if someone is brain dead but otherwise "healthy" there always seems to be a bit of uncertainty. That's where I think actually saying someone is dead becomes a little bit of a gray area. So I'm all for making an informed decision, but I was pointing out that sometimes it's not always such a clear and uniform line for determining death.

That article has a lot to do with the dilemma of determining when someone is actually dead. It's an interesting paradox to think of a beating heart cadaver.

Because you think House is a representation of how real medical professionals act? There are many things about that show that are inaccurate. Besides, if you were in the hospital when a large group of people came in who needed organ donations, simply letting you die to get your organs doesn't make sense because they would need to various amounts of testing to determine if you are a match for someone. And that would take consent. They can't just take your kidneys and slap them into someone because they're fully functional. Then you would end up with two dead patients. EDIT: I should clarify that asking a family to donate is not an easy task and I don't wish it on anyone. But life is full of making shitty decisions at shitty moments ,and if I knew that my death could give someone else a second chance at life it would be worth it.

Did your mail carrier come up to you and ask about the project when you first started? What did she think?

I also believe in equal-opportunity asshole labeling...that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean. :) And I agree that his playing the oppression card was a bit silly. Hopefully the extended interview has more interesting discussion.

AMA Request: Jon Stewart by baby_corn_is_cornin IAmA

[–]scarlet-agate 1 point2 points ago*

Not that I would want to bug him with asking questions about his family outside of work, but I would ask: How do you explain what you do to your children? I remember Colbert saying that he doesn't encourage his kids to watch his show because of how they might perceive his character. Even though Stewart doesn't have the same sort of 'character' I would still be curious how he explains his job.

Edit: clarity

How I feel as a Microbiologist when I hear people say vaccines cause Autism by grangermin funny

Depending on what type of laboratory setting one works, microbiologists may also do virology and immunological testing. And med techs learn about the area of immunology as part of a generalists' background.
