Baby Shower Registry Help by pseudnonymousin Mommit

Oh, yes. White noise is the best! Bed Bath and Beyond sells a Homemedics sound machine for $20. I have two - one in baby's room and one in my room, for those rare mornings when I get to sleep in and the house is noisy. :)

  • oh, one more thing...a swing. It will save your life early on. :)

  • Sophie (teething toy...the best!)
  • Muslin Swaddle Blankets (they double as shade in the stroller, light blankets, etc.)
  • Baby Bullet (and extra food storage containers...we like the OXO brand 2 oz size)
  • 3 sheets, 3 bassinet sheets (get three of everything. 1 accident means a spare will be used, and then you have a backup in case laundry doesn't happen every 15 minutes.
  • Halo Sleep Sacks (for when Swaddling is done)
  • Board Books (Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?, The Runaway Bunny are all cute books)
  • Soft books baby can play with on own ("Indestructibles" are made for baby to play with...they can chew and bite and they never get ruined)
  • Lovie (a small, safe security item for baby to sleep with). I didn't give mine to my little one until he was 7 months, but I know plenty of moms who used it early on...it's safe, small, and pretty breathable. I believe ours is the brand "Under the Nile". Got it on Amazon.

  • For toys, our favorite brands are: Haba, Melissa and Doug, B. you (these are sold at Target), Under the Nile, Green Toys. All of these brands are very safe (BPA, phthalate, lead free). :)

  • For clothes, we LOVE Carters' onesies, BabyGap, Old Navy. These are our staples for sure.

  • I really recommend getting an Amazon Wishlist started as part of your registry. So many great baby items (esp the toys I mentioned) cannot be found at most of the big name stores.

CONGRATULATIONS!

When do you put your baby down to sleep? by RatSandwichesin Mommit

[–]sarav 1 point2 points ago

At 3 months, my little one was going down around 9. Then, the bedtime gradually got earlier. Around 4.5-5 months, he was going down around 7-7:30.

He's now 9 months and things have stayed the same. What helped us the most was our bedtime routine. Even at 3 months, we did the same thing each night - bath, story, feed, bed. At about 7.5 months we started sleep training because he still wasn't sleeping long stretches consistently. At this time, we put feeding before story time so he wouldn't fall asleep while eating.

Now he sleeps 7ish - 7ish without waking. It's absolutely fabulous! Let me know if you want more info on the sleep training (best around 6ish months, IMO).

I would like this recipe, please.

Check out the food blog I just started. I'm still learning how it all works, but it's been a lot of fun so far. :) by saravin food

Thanks. Honestly, I don't know how I looked past the fact I could make the font bigger. I changed the font, too. I appreciate your opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. What kind of font would be easier to read?

Hey moms, a couple questions from a soon to be first time mom! by truthspeakstwicein Mommit

[–]sarav 4 points5 points ago

1) No advice, sorry.

2) Sophie the Giraffe. It is a teething toy, but by 3-4 months, my son loved chewing on it. It's $20, but swear it is worth every penny. I have never heard someone say anything bad about Sophie, and most babies we know have one.

I second the Aden and Anais swaddling blankets. They are lightweight. My son is 8 months old, and now they also work great for shading the stroller...and I am sure there are tons of other secondary uses. (If the traditional swaddling doesn't work for you (it didn't with us), try swaddling from the chest down. My LO loves being swaddled around his legs, but he got really mad when he arms were involved.)

Halo Sleep Sacks for when you are done swaddling. (It's a wearable blanket)

A good baby carrier. One you can wear while vacuuming, cooking, etc. Sometimes it would be the only way to get things done. (We used the Moby when my LO was tiny, and now we use the Ergo.)

A glider or rocking chair that you won't mind sitting in for a while

If you are interested in co-sleeping without sharing a bed, get a bassinet that attaches to your bed. You'll be comfy, baby will be comfy, and you won't be walking down the hall 134 times a night for whatever reason.

3) A baby gym. Sometimes when I needed 5 minutes to do anything, my LO would happily lay under the dangling toys and just stare at them. I think Fisher Price's one comes with music and lights. Again, not an all-the-time thing, but it helps out in a desperate situation.

Little toys to hang from her infant seat. It'll give her something to look at while in the car. Oh, while we're talking cars, get a mirror to attach to the seat she'll be sitting on. That way, you can see what she's doing.

Congrats! :)

Flying by Jordypopin Mommit

[–]sarav 0 points1 point ago

Nurse (or bottle feed) during take off and landing. Bring a boppy or other infant pillow. For 90% of the flight with my 9-10 week old, he nursed and slept on my lap/pillow. The white noise of the plane will be your friend.

If you have a travel system to maneuver around, you may check both your stroller and car seat at the gate for free - just get the tags at the gate. Amazon sells inexpensive red gate check bags if you're interested in keeping baby's things away from the other things in the stowing area of the plane.

The airport staff is usually very nice and helpful, and when we were traveling, we were even allowed to use a separate security check point so we could take our time/not wait in a horrendous line.

You'll be fine. :)

9mo sleep issues - need your advice mommit! by amuse-douchein Mommit

[–]sarav 1 point2 points ago

I saw your post a few days ago, and didn't respond because I didn't think I had anything helpful to say. Well, I really feel for you; so I'll offer some advice that may or may not be helpful to you.

I agree that you should wait until the tooth is through the gums. Sleep and teething don't go.

I have an 8 month old, who - until 2 weeks ago - required rocking/nursing/bouncing every night to go to sleep; and he was up at least once to nurse, too. Then a friend recommended "The Sleepeasy Solution" to me. I followed it to a T and he was sleeping through the night in less than a week. I am sure he will have some hiccups along the way, but literally, this book helped him do a 180 degree change.

It is very CIO, but there are some other important things to consider in the book as well. I suggest you look at it. I literally felt like I had one of the most high maintenance babies when it came to sleep ever, and in the last two weeks - since starting the sleep training - I have been so much happier and sleeping so much better.

(I definitely felt like crap letting him cry, but he figured it out, and we are both better for it.)

Good luck!

Getting my son to write his name by haydenandlexysmommyin Mommit

[–]sarav 0 points1 point ago

I agree. I am a former preschool and elementary school teacher. I like all the ideas mentioned here. Start with "fun" stuff like the playdough, shaving cream, whatever else he seems into. It will get him to recognize letters as well as develop some fine motor skills even if he isn't doing it by holding a pencil and writing. When the time comes, let him write with whatever instrument he wants - crayons, markers, silly pens, etc.

Sophie is the best! It's kinda pricey for a teether, but worth every penny. It's made of safe materials and every baby I know loves it. :)
