So, question: I'm an active duty Marine who just got back from Afghanistan in February and will be deploying again sometime soon. Am I eligible for this? I'm currently stationed in North Carolina. Here is what I'm planning on: If I AM eligible, I would like to ask for donations towards buying some BOSE Noise cancelling headphones.

Why donations for a set of $300 quality headphones? Because I'm a cryptological linguist who is fluent in Pashto (the language the people of afghanistan speak) and need them for my job. I deployed last time with the issued headphones and doing my job was very difficult because of how loud it is on a base in Afghanistan and how shitty those headphones are. So my plan is to get the good headphones so I can do my job better.

thanks.

I'll answer this one, since I know the answer:

yes, many pools do offer adult swimming lessons that start from the basics, and many of them schedule the classes so that they are convenient for people with real careers. I would reccommend calling various pools, gyms, and rec-centers near you and asking what they offer and what they charge. I'm sure that there will be one or two that will offer what you need.

How long does it take to get used to holding your breath while exercising in a pool? I've been swimming my entire life (was on the swim team when I was younger for a number of years) but only recently started swimming again for fun during my lunch breaks. I'm in good shape and can run for miles and miles and miles without losing my breath but I can't seem to figure out how to breathe doing the front crawl without running out of breath. I've tried breathing every 4 strokes, every 3 strokes, and every 2 strokes. Yet I always run out of breath! I can't make it 4 pool lengths with out having to stop and catch my breath. WTF? I don't remember having this problem when I was younger!

edit: first comment in the thread and no reply after 15 minutes? WTF swimmit mods?

edit2: they replied, and how! thanks for the insight!

.... what is this from?

I'm kind of struggling in school and my social life, and yet I want to get that NROTC scholarship and be a marine corps officer. is there any marines here who can give me a little motivation? hell, you don't even have to be a marine. I just need some motivation by Navy_bratin GetMotivated

[–]ryanx435 1 point2 points ago

enlisted marine here. If you, as an officer, are not better than every single marine in your charge, you have failed.

you must be smarter.

you must be stronger.

you must be faster.

in order to lead the best, you must BE the best.

If you are not the best, you will get marines killed. If you are not the best, then you have no business in my corps.

[–]ryanx435 1 point2 points ago

yes! The only reason I even come to /r/getmotivated is for videos. All the other posts are, in my opinion, banal and trite. The videos are good because they are more effective at making me motivated, they are much more effective at accessing my emotional subconscious and actually make me feel motivated.

so. good on you for posting this. thanks

Reddit, my friends call me a scumbag because I automate my work when I was hired to do it manually. Am I? by CS-NLin AskReddit

[–]ryanx435 -6 points-5 points ago

It is people like you that are a major reason it is so hard to find employment right now. People are no longer needed to do much of business. Before you downvote, hear me out.

First, this is an issue that relates to "tragedy of the commons". By acting in your own self interest, you are actually making it worse for everybody else in the long term. You make it so that jobs that people do can be replaced by automated scripts. Is it in your best interest to do so? yes. You seem to have made a nice career from doing so. Is it in the company's best interest? yes. They don't have to pay a script. Is it in the best interest of someone else who needs employment and would have been able to do this job? no. absolutely not. The shared resource of potential jobs has been reduced.

this is partly your fault.

Look at it this way, right now, you are worth 1 data entry person to them. With your code, you are worth 10.

using this for numbers (because I have no idea what the actual numbers are), you have actively destroyed 10 jobs. I'm assuming you've done this a couple times, so I'm sure the number is actually quite higher.

Anyways, something to think about. I'm sure there is some flaw in my reasoning, and I'd be happy if you'd point it out.

ha ha truth! I am fucking clueless about the law. I'm neither a lawyer nor a cop. I also didn't score you based on your arguments.

You Have Every Right to Photograph That Cop | American Civil Liberties Union by icecld2in politics

[–]ryanx435 7 points8 points ago

you're right, there is proof, in real life. But not in any of the comment posts. Not on reddit. the disconnect is that I have absolutely no desire to read the case. I'm not willing to spend the time to do the research to figure out who is correct. I'm also not willing to verify if you are actually a law student or not. Even if I did read the case, because I'm not a lawyer and don't have the educational context necessary, I wouldn't be able to be sure that I interpreted what I read correctly. This is why arguing on the internet is such a crazy thing. Its not verifiable for me to know which side is more correct!

as an aside to the discussion that we are having, if you actually are a law student, than I accept that you are correct. in real life, people trained to be lawyers will always be more of an authority on legal matters.

you and me are more similiar than you think, just with different sets of expertise. Mine, however, very rarely comes up on reddit.

And that's why you're downvoted. Because you're an idiot.

probably true. then again, maybe not. not really worth arguing this point.

You have the audacity to think you know better than an expert about a topic in which you have no actual or relevant knowledge.

in real life, I would defer to the expert. Someone who I know to actually be an expert. In the case of a lawyer, it would be someone I would hire thats certified by whatever they need to be certified to practice legally, who has a degree, who has experience and has been proven as acceptable, and that fits within my price range.

on the internet, there is no proof that you are who you say you are. For all i know, you could be some high-school drop out who read wikipedia and is pretending to be a law student. the cop that you were arguing with very well may or may not be a cop. Therefore, all of the arguments made by both sides are suspect. There is no proof what you say is more correct than what your oppenent says. The only way to score who is more correct is the karma point of the comments, which, I'm sure you'll agree, is a terrible way of deciding who is correct about the subtleties of law. as you say, us fuckwits on reddit are idiots. to me, that includes your opponent AND you.

you'll notice that I didn't score either you or your opponent on your arguments at all, but rather on stylistics and types of arguments. I'm not qualified to do differently.

I leave you with a link to an article that I found several years ago that I saved. It is relevant to your previous comment.

WTF is a blindfolded guy doing outside my window? by mrkekedin WTF

[–]ryanx435 0 points1 point ago

I had no desire to ask the guy anything frankly because I couldn't care less what he was doing, it was just a funny situation, period.

you say that now, but the fact that you asked reddit what was going on says that you did care and wanted to know. actions speak louder than words.

you can't honestly believe we would harm or harass the guy.

yes, yes I can honestly believe that. I don't know anything about you, except that you presented 3 courses of possible actions in your comment. To me, all 3 of those actions would have harmed and/or harassed the guy. bad people exist and based on what you said in your comments you seemed like one to me.

Lastly, in the very off chance they were actually doing something productive, which, quite honestly, didn't seem the case, then why would I bother them in their affairs?

30 seconds of their time to ask a polite question, as I suggested, would not be a bother. throwing peanuts at them or yelling at them through your window, as you suggested, would be.

I leave you with a Ricky Gervais quote that I heard the other day and seems to fit

I don't know who Ricky Gervais is or what his credentials are. Honestly, I don't care what he says. I would be much more interested in anything you said personally because I am having a discussion with you and not Ricky gervais.

TL;DR: Lighten up, man

fuck you. people like you are whats wrong with our generation and I'm sick of it.

every time I bother to comment I find that reddit tends to downvote me, and I'm never completely sure why. I assume its a combination of the fact that my opinions probably differ from the majority of reddit's users, and that I tend to write in an antagonistic manner. Also, I don't comment very often nor spend much time reading comments so I don't have a good idea of what a comment that gets upvoted is supposed to be like. I hereby announce that I don't give a fuck and will continue to comment in the manner that I see fit.

and the way you comment on reddit is a prime example as to why the public hates lawyers: you're egotistical douchebags.
