I need a recommendation for a new laptop. by ashaikin gaming

[–]roo-ster 1 point2 points ago

You should reconsider this decision. Laptops are just not well suited for gaming so you'd be better served with a desktop. I know that it would be great to be able to take your gaming machine with you where-ever you go. But for me, the trade-offs don't make this a good choice.

Gaming systems require high performance processing, high bandwidth memory, and high performance graphics. Using any currently available technology, devices with qualities consume lots of power and generate lots of heat. A desktop has the room and airflow to dissipate this heat but laptops, which are built to be small and portable, do not.

Yes, gaming laptops are available for sale. But anything with high performance will be expensive. Even worse, it will be very expensive to repair; and it likely will need repair. Heat generated by modern games needs a large chassis with multiple fans to keep the electronics cool. If you game on a laptop for lengthy sessions, your computer components are very prone to failure.

Desktop use standardized components. You can easily replace a power supply, processor, motherboard, video-card, and most other components with standard parts that are available from many suppliers. By contrast, all laptops use proprietary parts that are available only from the OEM. (Typically only the hard drive and memory are standardized and available from numerous suppliers). This means they're hard to get, and expensive.

A former high school football star whose dreams of a pro career were shattered by a rape conviction burst into tears as a judge threw out the charge that sent him to prison for more than 5 yrs... the woman lied, there had been no kidnap and no rape by maxwellhillin politics

[–]roo-ster 13 points14 points ago

On reading this story, my first impulse is to seek punishment for the accuser. I hope she goes to prison and rots there.

But after some reflection, I'm more concerned that the large number of cases of wrongful conviction haven't caused every state to reconsider their Rules of Evidence and the legal standards required to convict someone of a crime.

When someone is sent to prison, or worse, for a crime they didn't commit, there needs to be an independent inquiry of the facts and circumstances that lead to the error and a process to prevent future occurrences.

The real victim (the guy who was wrongly imprisoned) lost his supposedly constitutionally protected rights. Society has an obligation to prevent the mistake from recurring. He is also due compensation from the state, and from the bitch that lied to imprison him.

I'm trying to figure out what I believe. Is there really a God? by Nottoosure2in self

[–]roo-ster 0 points1 point ago

I think it helps to separate God/religion from 'organized religion'.

It's healthy to want to know about other religions and cultures. Read religious texts from other faiths or, at least read about them. But I'd try to stay away from modern religious organizations and leaders. They are selling a product; often one that's far removed from the original.

Good butchers in the Norwalk/Stamford area? by DiscountPoniesin Connecticut

[–]roo-ster 1 point2 points ago

I'd go to Stew Leonards in Norwalk. In some respects they've declined, but the meat is still very good.

If you want to offer something a bit different, try this. Steve's market in Norwalk on Main street, just north of Hoyt St. Get some Tzatziki sauce, kalamata olives, and pita bread. Marinate chicken cubes overnight in olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. At you B-B-Que, just grill the chicken on skewers and serve with the pita bread, olives, lettuce and tomatos.

The Tzatziki at Steve's is incredible, so if you're in Norwalk, don't substitute any other source.

BTW, I have nothing to do with Steve's and I don't live in Norwalk any more. But every summer, I drive the 90 minutes to Norwalk to pick up my summer grilling supplies from them.

Not for lots of species. This planet has never tried to support nearly seven billion people before. Even if our species survives, we're about due for a major die off.

Whatever the cause -- disease, famine, war, water scarcity, pollution, natural disaster, etc. -- history is filled with major population-correcting events.

I see no reason to obscure the license plate. The driver is almost certainly immune to shame, but I say, put his selfishness on display for all to see. Perhaps someone whose respect he covets, will object.

Harvard University is doing a study on presidential campaign contributions, and I'm one of the guinea pigs. by neurotransmissionin politics

[–]roo-ster 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps this really came from the Republican Party. They could be trying to entice you to promote their cause with neighbors who contributed to the other guy. Or show you that other neighbors gave more, so you should too.

I don't know either way, but I do know that political mailings are often not when they, at first, seem to be.

YouTuber disproves Hannity guest who says "At least we don't have police beating up protesters here in America." by iamnotfromtexas90in politics

[–]roo-ster 23 points24 points ago

I suggest that it's not that "more people care", but that the increasing ubiquity of low cost video recording equipment has made graphic displays of police violence so commonplace that they hard hard to ignore.

Without video evidence, most people assumed that anyone the police assaulted 'deserved' it. But now, every day some new video comes out showing cops beating and even killing people for little or no reason.

Video is a game-changer. Police organizations around the world risk losing the popular support that they've always enjoyed. They need to train their cops to assume that they are ALWAYS being video recorded. As they like to say to others; if they're not doing anything wrong, they shouldn't mind.
