The proper response to Mormonism by bronchialin atheism

[–]rikker_ 0 points1 point ago

Oh I agree the idea is canon, but an academic's specific interpretations aren't, even if published in an official magazine.

Also I guess I'm more claiming that canon in the absence of lay belief doesn't mean much, and there are better targets for ridicule, like the wacky stuff most actively believe and live by. Kolob is just as you said, a doctrinal obscurity.

The proper response to Mormonism by bronchialin atheism

[–]rikker_ 3 points4 points ago

I would still argue it's not a well delineated or widely believed idea. The Ensign magazine is an official publication but not canonical. That article was not written by a member of the clergy, either, but rather by an academic.

Kolob hasn't been mentioned (except as a place name in Utah) by any Mormon leader in their twice-annual global conference, seen as the current source and focus of modern doctrine, in nearly 50 years, and apart from a handful of mentions in the 1960s, hardly at all in the 20th century. No mentions at all in the current century. Full text corpus here:

The proper response to Mormonism by bronchialin atheism

[–]rikker_ 5 points6 points ago

Kolob is an odd historical relic of Mormon theology that has not really been discussed in a century, and is not literally believed in any active way.

Ask Mormons about it, they have a hymn that mentions it, and a few mentions in scripture, but they don't think god's an alien and there is no widely held belief that he is any specific height.

They do believe god is a flesh being, though they hold the rather odd belief that god has no blood; he is flesh and bone in Mormon theology, but not flesh and blood. A bit strange and arbitrary, yes. They associate blood specifically with mortality. Christ when on earth had flesh and blood as any man; after resurrection he had flesh and bone. Deic biology is not really discussed beyond that, though, other than the belief that human bodies are very similar.

Not defending the beliefs as logical, but just trying to clear up Bill Maher's typical willful attempts to make the beliefs sound wackier than other religions. Ask any Mormon if they believe god is a 6'2" alien from Kolob and every single one will think you are nuts. Many will not have even heard of Kolob. Take that as you will.

Because there is a "that guy" every time. You can read through my argument why that is invalid and why a $10 minimum is still PWYW at that link.

Well, the galapoints program has yet to be launched, so I'd save the accusations of fraud until at least then. And as it was never a product itself, and there was no "switch" to a pricier product, I think your complaint is an exaggeration.

The analogy is, of course, intentionally ridiculous. Point being this: the minimum is always the price. The widespread use of the phrase "pay what you want" on promotions that include a minimum price demonstrates that the connection you're trying to draw, between "pay what you want" and "smallest monetary amount possible" is a faulty one. You "pay what you want" above the minimum price. Some set the minimum at $0.01, some set it $5. Under this definition, Indie Royale and everything else that lets you pay more than even a relatively high minimum, are "pay what you want" bundles.

In other words, you seem to be arguing that the meaning of the words demand the minimum always be $0.01, because regardless of the minimum, if I only wanted to pay $0.01, then I'm not paying what I want.

My counterargument is that the meaning is governed by usage, and it is no more objectively logical to require that the minimum always be $0.01 to meet the definition of the phrase "pay what you want" than it is to require that the definition include payment in non-monetary items.

Good luck to you, then. For $5 you could also buy 2-3 of the loads of indie titles on sale this week.

Are you looking to give away only tradable games?

I could trade a couple of complete Indie Gala bundle gift URLs (Gala 3 + Gala 4) in exchange for your $5 Steam wallet, so you'd have keys to I think 13 Steam games to give away (and some DRM-free ones to download for yourself).

I'd do that for a copy of Psychonauts: http://store.steampowered.com/app/3830

That's just semantic quibbling. You get to set your own price. It's no more valid to make this complaint than to complain that they wouldn't let you pay in fingernail clippings, or negative dollars, or moon dust.

"Pay what you want" is an intentional phrasing that emphasizes the aspect of consumer choice, that you are able to pay them more if you feel so inclined, in order to support what they do, whether that's selling kickass bundles or supporting charities. It is intentionally misconstruing the meaning to think that it should entitle one to get the product for less than they are willing to accept in order to sustain themselves with. Humble Bundle lets you pay a penny, yes, but there's no inherent reason the phrase "pay what you want" must allow payments down to a penny.

Edit: Grammar and some expansion.

[–]rikker_ 2 points3 points ago

Congratulations on being that guy. Someone says this every time there is a bundle. Minimums are the norm, and help prevent bundles from going the way of the dodo when no one can even recoup expenses off of them, let alone make any money. If you like cheap game bundles, reasonable minimums are a good thing.

Natural market forces will prevent minimums from growing too high, because those who put overly high minimums in place, without quality games, will simply fail to sell and disappear. The market will show what it can bear.

Sorry you can't pay a penny, though. What a burden.

Edit: Spelling.

For fans of the adventure genre, this looks like a great bargain, and interesting games. Especially since one of them is the prequel to a title included in the ongoing Groupees Build-a-Bundle promotion.

I don't think any of these activate on Steam, do they? I know some of Nuuvem's titles do, but probably not these.
