This is one I did last year. It's extremely low budget - the client only paid $350, but he wasp leased with the result.

Would a cable like this be any better than a regular 3.5mm to 3.5mm to use on my H4n to T3i? by bLizTIcin weddingvideography

FYI - Canon IS in the market to make or sell EF mount consumer SLRs As video Cameras. Here ya go: http://www.engadget.com/photos/canon-cinema-eos-1d-c-and-c500/#4956947

During the Christmas season, does your cable provider display a fire burning in a fireplace on one channel? If so, do you ever see an arm add a log or prod the fire? by dbarefootin canada

In Edmonton Shaw Cable runs a thanksgiving roasting turkey channel. And if you watch for a loooooong time, somtimes you see the legendary turkey baster!

What makes certain cameras more suited to certain types of films (documentary v feature, etc)? by Li0Liin WeAreTheFilmMakers

[–]rickhunter333 1 point2 points ago

My situation:

I always use two cameras when doing documentary work. Yes it's a helluva lot of stuff to carry around - especially when you're stuck in a jungle or something - but it's also very helpful if one of your cameras break or is stolen. And that sort of thing will always happen when you least expect it.

I've been using a Sony Z1 HDV and Canon T3i DSLR the past 6 months. Each one has a particular function. The Z1 is fairly effective for 'run and gun,' shooting, for when I'm runnnig around shooting handheld stuff. Which is a lot of the time.

But the DSLR lets me use an assortment of lenses, is compact, and looks amazing. i use the T3i for most of my interviews (with a 50mm lens) and i also use it for super telphoto stuff - i have a 100-400mm lens.

From a traditional cinema-style point of view, a DSLR gives the DOP a wider range of lens options, wider depth of field, and lower light capability. Similar to shooting motion picture film. Generally more time consuming and preplanned. Whereas the HMC 150 is more for quickly capturing something - like an event.

So if the short fiction film involved running around a desert and has a 'doc-fee' perhaps the 150 is the better way to go. Otherwise I'd say a 600D is the better choice for drama.

At least that's what my experiences have led me to believe.

Wow - my reply was kind of bitchy. I apologize. My life was very impacted by the advent of video DSLRs and I take them very seriously. But instead of 'focusing' on their limitations I should be 'reflecting' more on the good shit. Like my new 100-400mm EF lens. or cat-fisting.

So you're arguing that Canon isn't in business to make or sell video cameras? What kind of bizarre argument is that???? I realize I probably dont need to do this, but just in case you're unaware of it:
http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/professional_camcorders

I probably wouldn't use the audio on a T3i to shoot the sequel to Die Hard IV, (though to spite you, I may try to do it,) but when I'm messing around with friends I'm not going to bother with a damn Zoom. its a real hassle. i cant imagine it would be THAT hard to allow me to at least monitor audio on a T3i.

And i totally disagree with your comment "Great for when you need to strap a small camera to something and get an otherwise impossible shot, but otherwise of limited value."

They are of immense value. The ability to mount cheap photo lenses and shallow depth of field is awesome! I use them all the time! And the quality is amazing and affordable. I do most of my interviews with a T3i and 50mm lens. Us video guys are experiencing a DSLR revolution right now! Viva La Revolution! Free Tibet!

I use a T3i and a Zoom - the zoom records MUCH better audio than the T3i. Why cant they just put some decent audio features on the damn thing!

yeah, it looks like a good camera for the price. i dig the full 4:2:2. Does anybody here have experience with the EX1R? Can someone compare/ contast the HPX160 and the EX1R?

Both the HMC150 and HPX170 have a thumb roller for the iris - I'm really sick of those. if I'm blowing thousands of dollars, I'm gonna spend it on a camera with a real iris ring. But for the bang for buck, both those cameras look pretty good.

Same argument as FS100 and AF100 - its a cinema camera. Apparently Sony is working on building an ENG-esque zoom lens for the F3 - rumored to cost $12,000.

Same issues as the FS100 - both are camcorders I would call 'cinema cameras.' Neither one has a functional method of being used as an ENG camera. If you want to use a still photography lens, or even cinema lenses thats great - but neither camera has a real working ENG lens. I need fully manual focus/zoom/iris/ with a functional zoom rocker.

do you mean the Sony FS100? that looks neat - but as of yet there's no functional way to use it as an ENG camera. it doesnt even have an ND filter wheel. i think its more of a cinema style camera. I don't like the fact the HMC-150 is only 1/3" chips, and the iris is controlled by a thumb wheel. I really want a proper lens.
