Gotta catch'em all by Awesomest_opossumin beer

What about Bier Brewery? They're in Indy, don't they have growlers? How about Broad Ripple Brewpub? Barley Island? It sounds like you haven't even looked up the breweries in your own city.

Adrian Grenier (of Entourage) launches the world's most hipster beer: yes, you actually need a Churchkey can opener to drink it by dmd53in beer

I don't like how a lack of a feature is presented as a feature in and of itself.

It's like people who buy something like a Smart Car. "Hi, I'd like to pay you extra money to remove features like power doors and windows and trunk space from my automobile. Just take all the features out. Thanks."

I don't see how having to find the appropriate opener adds to the enjoyment of a product, but that's just me.

Arcade Brewery is trying to get funded! Only $1500 and 13 more hours, help out! by lunchbox_incin beer

[–]redjameskidd 0 points1 point ago

Wow, I cannot believe how much money they've raised in just the last few days. With 5-6 days to go they were barely over halfway, and now they're only about $1,000 from the goal. It would really suck to see them fail at it now.

Mash Tun — a new craft beer journal from Chicago, and photos of the launch festival (Good Beer Hunting) by goodbeerhuntingin beer

[–]redjameskidd 0 points1 point ago

I was at the festival. It was a good time. Not quite as many places pouring as were advertised, but good beer on hand. Best thing was getting to try stuff from most of the homebrew collectives.

I love this about craft beer, that you can go to one of these events and the best thing you have while you're there has been made in someone's apartment closet, and not in a professional setting. How crazy is that?

What is the deal with the punch top cans? by hornytoad69in beer

[–]redjameskidd 79 points80 points ago

When you have a beer that tastes like watery crap, it's best to just let it flow directly into your gullet and bypass taste buds entirely. Hence, this can.

With only 6 days to go, Arcade Brewery is only about half way to their goal. Help them out and get some beer at the same time! (once they brew it) by ij00miniin chicagobeer

[–]redjameskidd 1 point2 points ago

Haha, I'm not against you. In fact, this is probably the only place I've ever seen two people actually agree with one another about the inherent problems of Kickstarter in general. I usually try, but am shouted down.

What I think is funny about the whole system is that there's not even any kind of guarantee of success. If somebody raises money to produce an album of music and they succeed in getting the funding, there's nothing legally binding them to eventually produce that album within a set amount of time. And who decides whether the eventual CD that consists of 60 minutes of ambient sounds and pot-banging equals "an album"?

Likewise, the $25,000 a brewery owns in no way makes their beer successful, once they start producing it. And stickers for/names on a plaque at a failed brewery don't really give a lot of satisfaction.

Thoughts on Beer Under Glass? by ChicagoBurdmanin chicagobeer

That is absurd that they would be charging for water.

[–]redjameskidd 1 point2 points ago

The thing that people sometimes don't understand is that with the breweries, unless it's the most nano of nano things in the world, they're not raising the money to start this business on Kickstarter. With the Arcade people, this $25,000 is just a drop in their bucket, and they're quite tiny.

The entire point is just to gather up a fanbase who are invested in your product. That's where the real value lies.

What CCBW events are people attending? by findablein chicagobeer

Mhm, that's why I'll be scarfing down a savory pot pie at Pleasant House next to Maria's beforehand, methinks.

[–]redjameskidd 0 points1 point ago

See, when I first looked, it was $40 for the Maria's event, and they had announced the breweries (which pretty much tells you which beers will be there). At the same time, it was $60 for the Fizz/Map Room event, they hadn't announced the breweries, it doesn't come with a copy of the new magazine, and there will be food trucks and food and whatnot on-hand at the Mash Tun event as well. The only downside is that they only give you four tickets for "rare samples," but I'm sure additional ones will be available for a few bucks. I'd prefer to start at the lower price and see if I want to spend more.

Does the Craft Day Afternoon event have food, by the way?

I'm sure it will be a great time, regardless.

I can only be in town on the next Saturday (live downstate), so I'm going to the Mash Tun Festival put on by Maria's and co. Seemed like the best variety of beer available that day, and a heck of a lot better deal than the simultaneous Craft Day Afternoon at Fizz.

I desperately wish I could make it to the Macho Man event.

Made a trip to Chicago- tell me what beers to try by Viva_Zapatain beer

[–]redjameskidd 1 point2 points ago

If I was you, the three highest priorities to hit would be Revolution Brewing, Haymarket Pub & Brewing, and Half Acre Brewing. I like big, brusin' American ales, and that's what those folks typically do.

Haymarket also does a lot of Belgian-American fusion stuff.

No, I meant that Dogfish Head is the same way. Their product backstories give me headaches.

I often hear contradicting opinions on the quality of their beers, although I've never gotten to sample any. Some people seem to feel that their whimsy isn't backed up by solid ideas, ala Dogfish Head. What do you guys think?

I think it's common courtesy to just tell the diplomat that you'll settle the whole matter over a meal of chilled monkey's brains. They love when you say that.

Yes, you might see this in a dive bar or something, but it's not really something going on at the beer bars or whatnot.

Where do you buy your beer glasses? by Wang_Davenportin beer

[–]redjameskidd 0 points1 point ago

You can get good deals on quality sets of low-end glassware in different beer styles like tulip, (which may be labeled "poco grande") at a store like Bed, Bath and Beyond. I've gotten sets of 4 nice glasses there for $9.99. Good for getting rocks and highball glasses as well.
