[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

[–]rauer 0 points1 point ago

I think that most of what he had to say was subtext. And I'm definitely not a Marx scholar. That said, what I got out of reading Marx (parts of Capital, the Grundrisse, and some other readings) was that human beings are inherently torn between being efficient members of a team and being wholly self-sufficient. We can't have both, and it seems that it's best to be a mixture, but I think he would argue that the maximal division of labor to the point where all a person does all day is one task (which is, in itself, meaningless), is bad for us psychologically. And I'd agree.

Another thing I got out of Marx is that I don't think he would have approved of modern communism because it ends up limiting and hurting the individual, and I don't like to think that he meant the Manifesto as a serious call to arms. I do think, however, that he values communities as systems that can both foster efficient production of goods (and whatever else satisfies the community's needs) AND a healthy respect for the multi-facetedness of each individual within the community. I ended up feeling that communism as he meant it could be adapted to small communities (like neighborhoods, nothing bigger than that)- not as a political system but as a social institution that would foster kindness and each member's responsibility for all other members of the community. And each of those communities might function better alongside a larger capitalist society (which I still value for its structure and production power), just to provide what everyone needs from their communities that capitalism is missing (so, I guess, socialized medicine, social security, etc, but on a personal, local level).

I dunno. I hope that made any sense :) It's been a long time since I've written about that stuff.

Came here to compliment you, too! And some kind of joke like "No shit, if I were that cat I'd take any opportunity to enjoy that living room as well"

...only imagine the joke is funny instead.

Totally uninformed here: What is the assumed risk, exactly, and why is it wrong?

Last paragraph: I've always felt that way, but haven't had a good way to describe it, as I'm terrible at understanding genetics! Would you mind elaborating with an example?

And Luria! Also a lot of social scientists had interesting things to say about the individual. Even Marx.

Today my girlfriend told me that she would never have kids with a guy with tattoos because she doesn't want her kids born with the tattoos of the father, as if they were passed genetically. A couple of kids walked into one of my classes in high school talking about how one of them had just gotten his driver's license:

"They asked me if I wanted to be an organ donor."

"What'd you say?"

"HELL no! I don't want no surgery!"

I thought it was a joke, but I looked back and both of them just looked deep in thought.

I like how at least half of these are based on Lamarckian evolution! Turns out the guy was just dumb like everyone else (except for the sliver of truth to it, I know I know)

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]rauer -2 points-1 points ago

There's absolutely no way exaggerated pronunciation in IDS will cause exaggerated speech as the child grows up. Common sense, an n of everyone I've ever met, and the entirety of the speech and hearing faculty at a top 5 SLP graduate program are against you. Sorry.

I always want to answer that with "It WAS! It WAS 10 feet closer! and 11 feet closer! and 900 feet farther away! And all of the different things that could have happened HAVE happened and WILL happen, and this one thing of gazillions of things that have happened happens to have created YOU, you idiot. I don't see what's so miraculous about that. More like bad luck."

Talking to an infant as if they were an adult will make them smarter.

Baby-talk (or "infant-directed speech") is amazingly, beautifully suited to maximize an infant's ability to learn language. Everything from holding the baby 8-12 inches from your face (optimized for infant vision) to using repetition, simple utterances, and exaggerated facial expressions....it all sounds and looks idiotic to adults, but there's a reason we all do it: it's adaptive and BETTER for the baby.

You lose special abilities in your brain after you're about 12 so that you can no longer learn a second language as well. FALSE: While you do lose the ability to discern speech sounds of foreign languages, you lose that ability when you're 12 months old. After that, there is no evidence to show that kids learn foreign languages any differently than adults, physiologically. More likely, they have less inhibition so they practice more, are often immersed in the new language rather than using a crappy textbook, and most of all have way, way, way more free time.

Please have mercy, I could not help myself. It's only because you mentioned grammar, and I...okay. I accept my punishment.

What are your favorite foreign idioms and phrases? by perrysixin AskReddit

[–]rauer 1 point2 points ago

I love "l'esprit d'escalier" (feel free to correct my spelling/grammar)

It means, literally, "wish/spirit of the staircase" and it refers to that feeling of "Damn, it would have been hilarious/biting/witty if I'd said BLANK." You know, when you're on the staircase leaving a friend's party.

My girlfriend just found out I occasionally pee in the shower, and was grossed out to no end. Back me up, Reddit. Most of you do it too, don't you? by atomic_hombrein AskReddit

How the fuck? I am a girl and I need a bush to squat behind and something to hold onto so I can hover at a non-gravitational angle, not to mention privacy to take my pants all the way off. I'm not saying you should be ashamed, but I would love some details so I can assess if this would be an option for me.

Parents, do you ever look at your child and just think about how unattractive they are, especially when they are teenagers? by Codadin AskReddit

BPD was my thought too, but my mom has it, so that's always my first thought.

Seven years on and I still think Tom Cruise was in the right by TheUKLibertarianin videos

Wha? Who are you? You don't belong here.

I made this comment, went to the store, and came back expecting a tirade. Instead, this imposter has come and validated my words????

[–]rauer 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone else but me think Cruise was overreacting? I mean of course, if you don't read into it, he's cool as a cucumber. But it seems very obvious to me that he wishes that guy would burst into flames. His intensity is wholly uncalled for, for such a small deal.

It could be it's a male/female thing. I don't thing "personal honor", as embodied in people not playing around with you, is something all that valuable. As a woman, I think the more equal we can be to one another, the better we'll all get along.

To me, it was sound and reasonable if you take it literally and take his words at face value. But the way he forbids the guy from walking away and the unusual eye contact, and those awful rhetorical questions you only use when you're trying to make a kid cry...used on an ADULT? And then when the guy's lip does start to tremble (which I'm certain it does), Cruise just gives this great big grin. To me, he's being a monster. I hope I would've laughed if someone squirted water in my face, ESPECIALLY if I'm some over-loved celebrity.

What keeps a nail attached to a toe or finger? Once the nail grows out of the "base", why does it grow still stuck to the skin up until the tip of the finger or toe? by kohakumidoriin askscience

[–]rauer 0 points1 point ago

Amazing! My big toe's nail is about in the middle, toes-wise. Half of my other toenails are twice as long and half seem to have not grown at all. In general, I clip my toenails about every other time I clip my fingernails.

[–]rauer 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if anyone else experiences this: all my fingernails grow at the same rate, but some of my toenails (seemingly random) grow much much faster than other toenails.

[–]rauer -1 points0 points ago

My friend once gave me terrible burns all over my hand and down my arm. We were at a peace vigil and it was a couple of candles I'd stupidly housed in the same holder, whose wicks came together and created a fire so hot it boiled the previously-solid wax. And then my skin. Accident, but still.
