Here we go...privatised-schools-r-us. by KenHolmesin education

It puts the institution and its profits above that of the student.

Under free-market conditions a business of this type would go bust, especially if other consumers had a similar feeling. If the institution is still operating then it must be doing something right.

It is also unequal and elitist.

Its about getting results. Who cares about being equal if the students are getting super good educations. No one is equal in life. Life has never been equal and never will be equal. The key metric to look at is isn't equality, its maximizing the potential of each person.

The private for-profit schools around here (operating in k-12) blow all the public schools out of the water by a large margin.

Making a profit isn't bad as long as there is a free market operating. Likewise, non-profit isn't better if there is a monopoly (ie. our current system). With our current system there is zero incentive to improve. So its no surprise that our current system is a failure. That's what happens when you create a government monopoly. You get lots of inefficiencies and the system is run politically, based on ideology and not what actually works. Just look for yourself we end up fighting over if we should teach evolution or not and if we should teach gay civil rights or not. Politics as usual.

The main thing you want to focus on is for-profit with a competitive free market. When that occurs what you end up getting is INNOVATION. Companies will start to compete with each other. For the parents, they will want to send their kids to the BEST school that gets the best results for THEIR child. The good companies will be rewarded with profit while the other companies will shut down. The end result is a constant incentive to improve.

World's Largest One Stop Shopping for Free Online Courses! by scientist541in education

[–]randomvisitor3241324 0 points1 point ago

Glad you said that because I am one of those people actually building a free online university that actually grants degrees.

At the moment its a long ways off, so I am just focusing on building high quality free courses. Eventually I'll issue paper certificates that can be verified on the website as well as degrees.

Most of those courses from MIT, yale etc are just free samples and marketing material for the universities. They will never issue anything that will replace the degrees they sell.

Gonna release it once I get done with my first course. I don't want to release it early and have people complaining.

Universities have a monopoly on issuing diplomas. The price will not go down until competition is introduced into the marketplace.

A free online university.

Actually that's what I am building now. The courses are written by myself, including the books and lecture videos. The courses are 100% free (supported by adsense) and I plan to make money by selling certificates of completion. The ultimate goal is being able to issue my own version of associates, bachelors and masters degrees (that are actually marketable to employers). Mind you, these are high quality courses. They aren't merely a collection of other people's materials or a collection of tutorials/short videos. These courses will be at the same level as a college course. In fact, they will be BETTER than going to a real college. That advantage comes from the fact that I am using state of the art technology to improve the learning process.

I have some other ideas that I am going to implement that will make this business a true game changer, however, I cannot disclose it at the moment.

Right now its 100% funded by myself. I am hoping the first few courses will generate enough advertising revenue that I can actually hire people to work for me.

  1. is definitely true for me. I figured my ideas was so good it would go viral and i'd get millions of visits very fast. Didn't happens. It turns out for most businesses the word spreads slowly and your business will grow slowly.

Your business idea will only spread fast if you have good connections and you can get on good news/blog websites like forbes, msnbc, techcrunch etc.

So how exactly does one get featured on mashable, techcrunch etc? Assuming you have a decent startup.
