TROPHY CASE

Why do Christians (and other religions) attend mass? by JThomsin Christianity

[–]pseudoanonymity 0 points1 point ago

No real disagreements, my wife came from an Episcopal background, but I haven't heard it called mass before.

So to summarize I'm not a fan of Catholic mass.

I know doubling isn't standard but depending on the level you're at when you leave you can get a substantial raise in pay plus options depending on your new employer.

I don't think we have to sugarcoat public accounting but it's also not the worst thing ever, I think we need to strive for more of a middle ground.

Primarily my view of the Catholic church, I disagree with the doctrine of the church, regardless of whether individual Catholics hold to the doctrine.

Mass and the elements of mass are not in and of themselves disagreeable, but taken in the context of Catholic doctrine they become disagreeable to me.

I'm confused, are you at odds with the Southern Baptist church now?

Not an expert on Southern Baptist doctrine, but none of your stated beliefs seem off key... In fact I would only take exception to the pacifism point, only to say that I think we as Christians could have an obligation to protect someone else that would necessitate violence.

I can see how a more rural environment could prove different, but I'm what you would likely consider a right wing Republican and I think I could get along with you in the pews. Does the church affirm Scripture as its highest authority? If so I think you need to start directing your opponents to Scripture.

I would stay the hell away from the local health and wealth church though, any church that tends to suggest that you all Christians are bound for prosperity clearly hasn't cracked open a Bible in years.

Mass is a different animal and holds a pretty distinct meaning in comparison with services of other denominations. I'm Reformed and not really qualified to speak to mass, nor would I speak kindly of it, so I'll leave that explanation to someone else.

As far as church services go, Christianity is relational and Scripture is pretty clear that we're meant to remain in fellowship with other believers. The structure of the service is supposed to remind us of what we believe. We worship, confess sins, repent and learn together as a community; the service should bring the congregation into closer fellowship (whether that's the case depends on your church) through the shared experiences and remembrance at Sunday service.

For me I just enjoy being there, I feel like it's a good reprieve from the world and kind of a period to 'recharge' as it were.

Yeah, one of my teams wrote 'no one has ever been killed by a debit or credit'; 70 hours a week outside is real work, we don't really do that much.

Busy season is a killer though, I have no idea how much weight I've gained but I definitely feel pretty nasty after sitting for 15 hours straight.

Anyway, just do the best you can, if you like it you'll be like me and think eh not the best but there are benefits. If not then you'll find some job with better pay in the industry. One way or another you'll make decent money in your life, so don't stress too much.

You still have free time outside of busy season. Not to mention the huge amounts of free time you'll get with significantly more money when you get out of public accounting.

Several people I know just left the firm and took significant raises, one doubled his salary and took a job that you'd need about 10-15 years of industry experience for.

Sure public has its downsides but the upside is free time with more money in a handful of years. Everyone is so doom and gloom and shortsighted here, it's depressing when you're trying to figure out what to expect.

What I started realizing a few years ago is that while God can be in every aspect of your life, talking about Christianity isn't the only way to show that. For your age, probably the greatest testament to your faith and the best way to witness to other people is to just be in relationships/fellowship with other people.

Christianity is relational, you should be involved in your church and with other believers supporting each other through your struggles; in fact if you have 'religious' friends (I'm not sure what that means in terms of their belief) I would recommend that you start talking about Christ with them. Discussing your beliefs and daily struggles is what fellowship is all about.

In terms of relationships with non-believers, one of the things I realize now is that in high school, the church and my faith were pretty central to my life, but my best friend was not a believer and we didn't necessarily spend all our time discussing Jesus. Yet eventually my friend came to Christ. Why is that? Can't be entirely sure because God wills what He wills, but I would suggest that the fact that I treated him like he was my brother, and my family opened our home to him (so much so that even my parents consider him a second son) played a part in the process.

Every human being is looking for two things, whether they realize it or not: something to worship and someone to relate to. You can provide the relationship, and point towards the one thing worth our worship with your life.

If you feel stalled, you should evaluate your spiritual life and your relationships with believers and non-believers. Scripture suggests that you're only going to feel fulfilled when you're in proper fellowship, because that's your purpose in life.

Last week, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board held its first public hearing relating to its 2011 findings that all of the Big Four CPA firms have failed to follow generally accepted accounting principles and frequently lack independence from management. by CalFlipin Accounting

[–]pseudoanonymity 1 point2 points ago

The PCAOB can kiss my ass. The ideas they're throwing out right now are absurd.

The audit firm rotation that they're pushing right now (and which the article doesn't mention but the tone certainly supports it) seems like a decent idea on paper, but in reality you're just screwing everyone who works on those jobs, and you're screwing the clients. I can't even imagine the amount of money that would be wasted transitioning every five years.

r/accounting, would you be so kind as to refresh me on the hierarchy of positions at Big 4 firms? by timeforfoodin Accounting

Associate

Experienced Associate

Senior

Manager

Senior Manager

Partner/Managing Director

Managing Director holds no equity in the firm but is still there. Basically most of the authority of a partner without the liability.

I start working a big 4 firm in a month, I am kinda terrified. by cweston9in Accounting

[–]pseudoanonymity 0 points1 point ago

So much whining.

/r/accounting is down on Big 4 big time so don't be too freaked out. It's surprising how quickly you get used to the hours, you think man I'm not going to be able to do this and then you're leaving at 6 or 7 and it's no big deal.

I came in without an internship so I had no idea what to do. For the most part just do what your senior/manager/anyone with more experience tells you to do, and if you're not sure, ask. Everyone is going to treat you like you have no idea what you're doing, so there's really no harm in asking.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

[–]pseudoanonymity 2 points3 points ago

The hours are not that bad. I was in your same position about a year ago and you really should just stop reading /r/Accounting if you don't want to be in total despair when interviewing.

I probably worked 60 hours a week during busy season, with a few weeks that had more hours. Granted, the few weeks that had more hours were like 100+ weeks. Anyway, point is it's not as bad as it sounds, the time passes very quickly and the experience is worth it.

Time flies when all you're doing is working and sleeping, and then you're out of it in March and I'm working normal hours with no weekend work. If you have more questions feel free to PM me.

Molinism and Calvinism. Anyone have some thoughts? by pridefulpropensityin Reformed

[–]pseudoanonymity 0 points1 point ago

Late to the party.

On a cursory glance of Wikipedia (I'm very scholarly as you can see) I would be very wary of Molinism primarily because it sounds to me as if certain logical laws are outlined as apart from God.

Basically my problem is that Molinism sounds as though it places a set of knowledge outside of God's will, which I don't think is right. God's will and God's knowledge have to be two sides of the same coin in order for God to be God, as far as I'm concerned, so the idea that there are facts that are aside from the will of God makes me nervous.

I could be interpreting it wrong though, but those are my two cents.

The only other question I have is why does it matter? I find that most people who try to wiggle around election and irresistible grace are typically struggling with letting go of a human-centric worldview.

Unable to Play Mass Effect 3 by pseudoanonymityin buildapc

[–]pseudoanonymity[S] 1 point2 points ago

I assume it's on the software side but I've only come across a handful of threads that address the issue. None of the solutions I've found have led to any real changes either. It's completely absurd to me that I built this computer last month from relatively high end parts only to have it crap out on me over a game that's not very resource intensive.

I am able to play Skyrim on ultra high with no problems, so the fact that Mass Effect 3 is somehow taxing is laughable to me.
