My parents won't let me see a gynecologist, but I want to at least get regular check-ups. What are my options? by no_obgynin TwoXChromosomes

The pap smear has always been way more painful than the pelvic exam, imho. Neither one is that bad, but the pelvic exam is not much worse than sticking your fingers up there yourself and pushing on your stomach a bit. Honestly, the worst part for me has always been that it tickles :)

If you think about it, people did used to get by without refrigerators, and things like pizza are pretty loaded with preservatives - in the meat particularly.

Reddit, what do you do when you are screwed, seriously screwed, for the rest of your life? by Shwinksin self

[–]prionattack 2 points3 points ago

Have you considered the possibility of getting onto a state pool for insurance? Alternately, try contacting private hospitals - many are not-for-profit and may try to help connect you with reduced cost treatment, payment plans, etc. Also, I think with the new health care laws, insurance can't kick you off for costing too much, so at least there, you should be safe.

It also sounds like you're dealing with some depression. You might mention that to your primary care doctor, and see if they can help you with drugs or therapy (drugs might be the way to go here because doctor co-pays can add up...). You might also want to look into pain management techniques, because I've been in extreme pain for long periods, and drugs aren't always the best way to go to manage that - sometimes they make things worse.

You should look into getting classified as having a disability, because that may actually help your employment prospects - companies get credit for helping people with disabilities, and it makes it more difficult to overlook you in the hiring process, since they will want to avoid the appearance of discrimination. Once you get a job, they are required to make "reasonable accommodation" for your problems, which wouldn't seem to be too hard, since shifting position constantly isn't exactly a difficult accommodation - they may even be willing to find a special chair for you that wouldn't hurt you as much.

Also, if you can go swimming, it might take the pressure off of your back and allow you to move a bit more freely. It's certainly worth a shot, and any exercise you can manage to get will help improve your mood as well.

Good luck!

Can someone with multipersonality disorder go to heaven if... by jpedin Christianity

[–]prionattack 1 point2 points ago

Bipolar != DID. They're to separate, very different diagnoses. Your bf's coworker was nuts, but bipolar highs tend to be more of a lack of self-regulation (i.e. getting into a philosophical debate with yourself but not keeping it in your head) with a side of attention-seeking behavior.

The "Marginalization" of the Christian Right. by GoMustardin Christianity

[–]prionattack 9 points10 points ago

Yes, but none of these things are marginalization. Extinction happens for all sorts of reasons, but it's not like we've started on a systematic campaign to eliminate all Christian right-wingers. It's just progress and a failure to adapt to changing social and economic norms. (I'm agreeing with you, btw)

Funny how it's taken so long to create a male birth control option-but researchers caution that it should be non-hormonal b/c contraceptives that rely on disrupting production of the male hormone "cause side effects such as mood swings, acne and irritability." Hah. by Dianaein TwoXChromosomes

[–]prionattack 43 points44 points ago

Plus, it's a lot easier to disrupt the release of a single egg and prevent sperm from getting to said egg than it is to disrupt the production and release of a million sperm. It's a failure-rate probability thing.

Statistical Illiteracy: American Community Survey, used to distribute gov't funding for public health and education, is “not a scientific survey. It’s a random survey", according to Daniel Webster, R-FL. by prionattackin statistics

[–]prionattack[S] 0 points1 point ago

The responses in surveys like this are anonymous. The representative here is concerned about "privacy" and "government intrusion" because government should in his mind be small enough to not need data. Also, note that the Senate tends to be the more level-headed body, so it's not likely that it will be entirely eliminated.

You could customize parts for a robot, a model city, a ceiling full of airplanes, ...

You could use it to beta-test designs that you could then patent.

You could get the CNC Router version and use it to carve penis shapes out of Ivory soap (the only thing my hubby's router is good for at this point)

Basically, it's a hobby just like woodworking or gardening, you sink $$ into it because it makes you happy.

I was reading Titus this morning and found some advice about discussions on Reddit. by EarBucketin Christianity

[–]prionattack 5 points6 points ago

And here I thought it was this part...

I desire that you insist on these things, so that those who have come to believe in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works; these things are excellent and profitable to everyone. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

The rest of it is good, sensible advice. The stupid controversies, though... that seems to be what Reddit is made of.

Honestly, as a grad student, a certain amount of physical labor is not only something I crave, it often increases my productivity. In an age in which "virtual fatigue" is rampant, doing something physical and productive in the real world allows your brain to rest somewhat from the theoretical/computational/programming arena.

My husband and I go back to his parents' house every couple of months, to help with remodeling their house, whether or not they actually NEED the extra hands to get the job done. The physical labor is a wonderful break, and then when we get back, it's a lot easier to sit down and work.

When I get home, I quilt, because my brain is already more or less dead by the time I quit for the day. Making something physical helps me recuperate, solidify ideas in my head, etc.

tl;dr: You shouldn't assume that professors wouldn't be happy with a little manual labor. It might even make them more productive.

What did school teach you that was blatantly false once you researched it on the Internet? by peetssin AskReddit

[–]prionattack 2 points3 points ago

We heard it once as well - first day of class, the teacher held up a picture of his third kid and said "condoms don't work". Abstinence is the only method to guarantee you won't get pregnant or die of an STD.

The rest of the class was scaring us about sex. Also, a unit on how to maintain your body weight, because "girls don't like fat guys" and "guys won't go out with you if you're fat" (for the girls).

Amen. I'm colorblind and hubby isn't, and without him, I would be stuck making some very hideous quilts. I love to sew, but having someone who's willing to walk around JoAnn's with me and figure out what goes (he does colors, I do the patterns) means that I'm not just wasting money. I've never known another guy that would voluntarily go fabric shopping.

Don't worry, colorblind people are better at picking out camouflaged objects - all those adaptations we've made over the years to figure out what colors things were, etc. are actually quite useful.

Besides, purple is a dumb color. And Barney is an even dumber show than purple is a dumb color.
