I'm an 18 year old girl who's had severe acne since 4th grade, AMA by breathedianain IAmA

[–]possumpaws 1 point2 points ago

I was also on accutane for 6 months (I had what was considered "moderate" acne, definitely not cystic), and my lips were pretty awfully chapped. That was the worst side effect I had. My skin cleared up and stayed that way for about 6 months. Then it went right back.
I would say it's likely not worth the other risks that you might experience, given that everyone seems to have had a completely different experience.

I've been to several dermatologists about mine, and every one of them said that having a better diet is good for your overall health, but that it won't change my skin. Myths from girly magazines.

We're still missing our guy who passed away in November. You did right by him, and I hope that all of the beautiful memories you and your wife have help you through this difficult time.

Please read if your dog has a choke chain!- A cautionary tale. by Evilrazzberi09in dogs

[–]possumpaws 0 points1 point ago

The daycare I worked at had a similar scenario with a buckle collar - and the buckle part was stuck inside of a dog's mouth. That did not result in serious injuries, but was nonetheless terrifying. They moved to clip release immediately following.

As a professional pet sitter, I had the same thing happen with clip release collars; again, with clip release in mouth. I came extremely close to cutting it off, but was able to release it. Always have tools on hand to deal with this sort of situation.

And please, people, do not leave choke chains on dogs. You should never be using one in the first place, but I became enraged every time I went to a house for the first visit to find a dog, IN A CRATE, with a choke chain on.

Dog Bite-Related Fatalities - What REALLY happened (x-post from r/dogs) by possumpawsin pitbulls

[–]possumpaws[S] 2 points3 points ago

I was informed by a woman yesterday that my dog (whom she hadn't seen) was a child eater. I'm so tired of pit bulls and pit-like dogs being unfairly represented in the media.

Next time someone tells you pet pit bulls are dangerous, keep a few of these reports on file to tell them about. And pass the link along so people can learn what's really going on outside of the sensationalized (and highly inaccurate) media reports.

I'm so tired of hearing media stories giving out half truths (and in several cases you can see in the 2010 report, BLATANT LIES) about dog bite-related fatalities. Spread this around, dog lovers.

IAMA Pedophile who handed himself in. I am including information about my rehabilitation AMA by welikejuicein IAmA

[–]possumpaws 6 points7 points ago

I'm so glad for you! I can't even imagine how difficult this is going to be for you, and I have to admit to being a bigot before reading your AMA. I can now distinguish between pedophilia and child molestation and I don't think that pedophiles necessarily suffer from mental illness. Thanks for enlightening me.

I hope that you find a way to deal with your attraction in a healthy (for all) manner and that someday you find a lasting and fulfilling relationship with someone you love. Best of luck to you!

Firstly, as an American I have little knowledge of the services available in the UK, but I find it extremely admirable that you did what you did in order to get help and prevent yourself from potentially participating, even if only passively, in child abuse. Thank you.

Secondly, are you attracted to any adults, even if to a lesser degree than children?

My best friend of 13 years is dead. I don't know what to do. by shitfucksin dogs

[–]possumpaws 1 point2 points ago

Tomorrow is 2 months since I lost my friend of 12 years (we got him when he was 6 - so he was 18). My husband and I cried, a lot, and had my other dog, Remy, to help keep us busy and gave us a shoulder to cry on. A few days later, we found a lost dog in our neighborhood, with no collar or tags. She stayed with us several nights before someone finally claimed her, after we had decided we'd keep her if she went unclaimed. So, about 2 weeks after saying goodbye to Taz, we went to the shelter in the next county over. We ended up bringing home two new pups who needed us.

We still miss Taz, but having the other dogs has helped us to have something else to focus on and love. Cleo loved you and it's obvious that you loved her. Thirteen years is a long time to build a bond, but start over with a new friend. You know that as much heartbreak as you feel now, you wouldn't trade a single minute that you had with her to avoid it.

Hugs to you.

Try a thundershirt whenever she's likely to have separation anxiety or when you're meeting new people. A muzzle isn't a bad idea until she starts getting better, to prevent accidents from happening.

I'm a big fan of the "Nothing In Life Is Free" philosophy. She's an ACD, so she's smart and should pick things up quick. Before she goes outside, she has to sit. Before she gets to eat, she has to sit. Before she gets her leash on, she has to sit (it doesn't have to be sit, but that's the easy one). No treats or toys or playtime unless she does something first. This helps build impulse control which will help her with more stressful situations later, and make her more confident in you being able to handle anything "scary."

You're already on the right track with school and your reading. Don't give up and don't get frustrated - she'll get it!

Just brought home our first puppy. Any thoughts/tips on how to go about training? by kelou4in dogs

[–]possumpaws 0 points1 point ago

  • Make the crate a good place - lots of treats and praise and never as a "time out" or punishment.
  • Cry it out method probably works best when you start crating overnight. He's young, he'll probably quit crying quickly if he isn't rewarded for it (i.e. gets attention from you).
  • Invest in some kongs and peanut butter to keep him busy during the workday/overnight. This can help distract him from being upset about his crate.
  • Walk him, don't carry him when you go places. Encourage him to meet strange people and dogs.
  • Don't have him off leash outside of contained and appropriate areas just because you think he'll listen/has no problem with other dogs. He could change his mind, and you don't know how another animal will react.
  • No choke chains. Ever.
  • Use a 6 foot regular leash. Flexi/retractable leashes are trouble for both of you.

Enjoy your new boy! Pics?!

Do atheists believe in the paranormal? by Catman789in atheism

[–]possumpaws 2 points3 points ago

Atheists typically are skeptics, so I think that it's unlikely that there are many atheists who reject the idea of deities and not other superstitions.

Demonic presences, possessions, exorcisms, things of that sort are religious in nature, so I can't imagine anyone rejecting god and religion without rejecting those ideas as well. Ghosts and the after life? Maybe, but it's still probably atypical.

Though I am a fan of unicorns.

So did they crush the elephant testicles, and then paint; or was the crushing occurring during the painting process? One way sounds way more interesting. There's a dead baby joke here.
