There is a lab in the Biology Department of my school that studies the effect of tourament style "catch, hold in a big tank all day, release" on fish mortality. Their field work is sitting in a boat and fishing all summer. They are funded by Shimano. I hate them.

If you really want to see what this "theory" is all about there is a rediculously long thread on TalkRational which has been going on for years (10,000+ posts)

The short answer is that the evidence is sketchy, and its main proponent (Algis Kuliukas) is an enormous crybaby.

There is a very well written rebuttal of the main points of the theory at http://www.aquaticape.org/ the author of which posts at TalkRational as Anthrosciguy.
