The only TAFE in Victoria teaching Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN) is cancelling the course due to budget cuts. by jpdynoin australia

[–]pengo 2 points3 points ago

Yep. Appears so. But it has a much larger barrier to entry and a higher cost. E.g. you wouldn't do a university degree just because someone in your workplace was deaf, but you might try a TAFE course one night a week.

Also I'm guessing people studying it at uni will be less inclined to become interpreters (if they're studying to become speech pathologists)

I studied Auslan at Kangan (~10 years ago). There's no way I could have learned Auslan through correspondence or by watching videos. It's hard enough when you have someone who can correct your movements and have people to sign with directly.

I've had that happen with Canon too.

No, it's not at all obvious that exactly the same food would have different effects based on time of day it was consumed.

[Community] Is there an interest in a match tracker? by naveedx983in SFxT

Main thing I want is something to remind me which characters my opponent used last time (or all the previous times) so I can pick mine accordingly.

When someone dies, does anyone actually go and change every "is" to "was" in their wikipedia article? by kobe_bryant_reactionin wikipedia

[–]pengo 2 points3 points ago

Yep, added manually and kept consistant between different language wikis with bots. If you view/edit the source of an article, the part that lists all the languages for the sidebar looks something like this:

[[af:Steve Jobs]]

[[als:Steve Jobs]]

[[ang:Steve Jobs]]

[[ar:ستيف جوبز]]

[[as:ষ্টীভ জব্‌চ]]

[[ast:Steve Jobs]]

[[gn:Steven Jobs]]

[[az:Stiv Cobs]]

[[bn:স্টিভ জবস]]

etc

Kingfisher which was in Northcote but is now closed (replaced by a charcoal chicken) because the owner moved to Perth :(

Update: The program I wrote that records my sleep every night and detects REM can now also decode Morse Code in the blinking patterns from within a dream. Relevant XKCD in 3. 2. 1. by I_Am_Coderin programming

[–]pengo 3 points4 points ago

You produce a chemical which effectively paralyses you while you sleep (as to prevent sleep walking/talking). Paralysed people can still blink.

Dear True Gaming: having just got a new netbook I decided to plow through all the indie games I've purchased. Is a main selling point of indie games that they're very hard and repetitive? by MontyAtWorkin truegaming

[–]pengo 1 point2 points ago

Indies make games they want to play themselves. If it's too easy, testing the game is no fun.

They're repetitive because they don't have the time/budget to make more stuff (though I wouldn't call Cave Story repetitive -- it has a huge number of places and creatures and story elements).

So I don't think "nintendo hard" is so much a selling point as it is just the devs making what they want to play and hoping there are others like themselves who will want to play too. Also balancing a game is really hard and boring.

We need to make this a requirement for police officers everywhere. To protect us AND them. by bhermitin pics

[–]pengo 39 points40 points ago

Except it's only the police who have access to the footage. In a legal situation it would become difficult or impossible or the public to review footage unfavorable to the police.

E.g. At protests where police have video cameras, you'll see the protesters also have them for the same reason.
