thanks! i just finished a master's in an entirely unrelated field last year, so i think the B.Sc. option is out for me (for now!). i might focus on the group fitness class route for now. i'm probably best suited for it as i don't necessarily want to make a career out of training.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of people pushing the "you've had surgery, so therefore you're a fragile flower that needs to lay in bed for weeks" mentality. In reality, that's WAY more destructive than starting back up the things you love as soon as it's safe.

On another note, this may be a blessing in disguise. You may learn to love weights even more than cardio!

I had foot surgery (twice) in the summer. I know how much it must blow for you; the foot is such a sensitive area. The most important thing is not to be afraid, and not to feel sorry for yourself. I fell into those traps briefly and it sucked. Start everything slow, go out your own pace (group fitness is a very bad idea at this point!) and see how it feels.

Things that worked for me were weights (e.g. seated barbell curl, shoulder press, tricep extensions, quadricep extensions, assisted chin ups/dips), stationary bike, and a shit load of ab work (leg raises are great because as a bonus you'll reduce the swelling by lifting your feet above your head)!

Also, calorie reduction to compensate for less calories burned due to lack of mobility.

I work a desk job, so I sit on an exercise ball, and put a $1 in a jar on my desk every time I don't cave and get an unhealthy afternoon snack. When it gets to x amount, I buy myself a new piece of workout clothes.

Intervals, intervals, intervals. If you're not going for specific distance, and instead are just doing so to stay fit and complement your lifting, keep your distances under an hour and vary your speeds (i.e. Run hard for a kilometer, run slow for half a kilometer. Repeat).

If you're having a really hard time getting your ass out the door, piss yourself off. Re-read an old e-mail from an ex that makes you furious. Lace up, and sweat it out. You'll run faster, too.

Find/map/record routes that are beautiful. College campuses are usually near fairly scenic areas and running is one of the best ways to explore cities. Go to Mapmyrun.com, google your campus, and learn to explore your city while exercising. It'll give you a whole new perspective.

I'm doing the Toronto edition in August. Still am stumped on precise training, though I took a look at the course and it appears that doing a lots of pull-up and chin-ups (my best is 7 chin ups in one shot, though a full-hang pull-up is still difficult for me), push-ups, and running hills will be helpful.

This guy talks about the training he did, and the impression I get is that if you've run half marathons before and are relatively strong, you'll be fine. Honestly, the more I think of it the easier it looks. DIET DIET DIET. I used to run marathons, and then got into powerlifting, but until I cut out sugar and flour almost entirely (substituting it with protein and vegetables) my belly fat hung on tight. It's also important to remember you can't "burn off" unhealthy calories. If your diet is poor, you can exercise as much as you want, but your stomach fat won't go away.

alright, but what sort of "training" did you do? i mean, the recommendations on the site are um... not really precise. i can do a shitload of pushups and a solid amount of chin ups, and have run a dozen races of various distances, but am still worried i'm going to get an ass whooping.

Awww that's too bad! I am doing the one in Toronto - we could have had a team meet-up. Seriously though, how "tough" was it? Did half the racers end up in hospital? I'm up for a challenge but not really wanting to ride an ambulance. I'm also planning on doing a powerlifting competition the next day.

The people you love are going to affect your life as long as you keep loving them and they keep loving you. It's inevitable. That said, you're a grown up with plenty of experience, and a genuine disinterest in falling back into bad habits. So stay strong, and stick to it. You know you can't rely on anyone else to stop you, so rely on yourself.

As far as I know, and with my experience, you only really need the 1g of protein per 1 lb of body weight on lifting days.

oh, hardly impressive at all. i was in the 52kg class and needed a total of 342 pounds in all three lifts (unequipped class, of course. i wasn't about to invest a ton of money in equipment not knowing if i'd stay int he sport!).

it was a great, great experience. i hope you find a fun meet to go to!

I'm 5'4" and I just did my first powerlifting competition last summer, at 25. I qualified for provincials, placed third in my weight class and am going to gun for a shot at nationals next year.

Powerlifting communities seem to be more lively in some cities, but no matter where you are, you can find one :)

Also, very, very hot that you're going to be a firefighter.
