How does something like Joomla, one of the most popular CMS platforms, get away with all of this? by spacez320in webdev

[–]onyxrev 1 point2 points ago

I hear you but many of the problems you describe are CMS problems in general, especially the database gripes.

MODx is soooo flexible that you can definitely hang yourself out to dry if you don't plan your site well but if you know what you're doing it's very very powerful.

edit you would probably like Refinery because it is designed for extension by developers

I used MODx from version .9 to around 2.1.x but left it behind because I refuse to do more work in PHP and I like the Rails ecosystem a lot better. That said, they recently got some nice corporate sponsorships so I expect it's a project with a lot of healthy future to it. They've written some solid intro docs:

edit wow, that page repeats itself like four times

If you need PHP, I'd recommend MODx. Otherwise I've been pretty happy with Refinery, a Rails CMS.

This makes the most sense to me. Thanks for you feedback.

I think the best choice is to practice without any effects and play as close to "live" as you can in rehearsals. I mean, even volume will have a big effect on the way the instrument behaves and I doubt most people practice at stage volume.

I know what you mean. I come from a studio engineering background so I have a love affair with good compression. To me it makes the bass sound "right" - but that's because I've heard the bass on recordings more than I've played it live.

I think I agree that it's best to turn it off when practicing.

Keep in mind that some pickups have natural compression to them while others don't. The signal will also compress a bit the closer you bring the pickups to the strings.

Exactly - I hear ya. Some basses are too edgy and rolling off the tone knob can be a bummer.

Bad compression is truly terrible. Can be a tonesuck and make the feel all wrong. But good compression is pretty amazing - like an LA2A or Summit Audio TLA-50. Not that you'd tour with either of those, but if you want to hear musical compression those would be great examples.

If you use Android I recommend running an app called Exfoliate that crawls through your entire history and deletes things one-by-one for you. It works! Then delete your account and it'll be really gone.

TrueCrack - a brute-force password cracker for TrueCrypt volume files [RIPEMD160, XTS block AES; CUDA optimized] by fnord0in netsec

[–]onyxrev 2 points3 points ago

It hides the data in the "free space" of the normal volume. Because it's all random data you can't discern which is which. That's why if you fill up the normal volume you hose the hidden volume's data. So don't do that.

You've picked such an easy example. Congress created the Oil Liability Spill Trust Fund to protect their oil buddies which limits their liabilities to a ridiculously low $75 million.

Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/02/us/02liability.html

Without the government's help that project would have been so risky to BP's liability that they would never have considered it. And that's not factoring in the revolving door policy where EPA officials get cushy oil job for giving dubious inspection exeptions for rigs just like BP's.

In need of help with an Al iMac and 12.04 by Uberg33kin Ubuntu

[–]onyxrev 2 points3 points ago

More recent Macs won't boot from an Ubuntu USB or CD unless you have both inserted. This took me forever to figure out. No idea why. And my MBP doesn't have a CD drive, so I had to borrow an external from someone.

I don't know if you really are missing an EFI partition. I think if it were really gone the thing wouldn't boot at all, so you GPT is probably just out of sync. The only way to get EFI back is to install OSX again, wiping the whole drive. Follow the most recent guides in the wiki from there.

I believe you will need rEFIt installed even if you are single-booting Ubuntu.

The worst part for me and the part that I think most Libertarians find most offensive is that one cannot typically hold one's government accountable for such mistakes like one can an individual or private company.
