Yeah, this always bummed me out. But I understand why they had to do in the movies, making them older made them look like Harry's parents rather than kids almost his own age. For those who didn't read the book (damn those people) and just went to see the movie, it would have been confusing for them and the movie makers had to appease to both crowds.
