Throws those ugly CAPTCHA's away! Put some drinks in a coolbox instead by goodguybartin technology

[–]noorits 0 points1 point ago

Many captchas actually have a secondary purpose - using human pattern detection abilities to decipher the parts of scanned texts (old books, etc) that the software cannot understand by themselves.

With that in mind, I very much prefer the captcha instead of playing some (probably) annoying minigame every time you need to enter something to an online form.

Ah, good point.

Always bothered me about a lot of sci-fi by tastes_like_thumbsin scifi

[–]noorits 8 points9 points ago

I'm not sure I understand the picture (aside from it probably being from Stargate Atlantis), but if you mean to say that it bothers you when, after building the bad guys up to real threat level, the good guys blow their ship to smithereens with a single salvo or shot, then yes - that bothers me as well.

The space battles in a lot of scifi shows follow an easily predictable pattern where the protagonists almost always win without even seeming to try, sometimes spicing the scenes up with blinky red lights and people losing their balance on the bridge. This is bullshit; if the baddies are talked up to be dangerous, then it should be seen on the screen as well. One-on-one dogfight? OK, the good guys' ship may come out relatively unscathed. Two or three to one? Screw that, if they don't have to run for the escape pods in the middle of the fight, then the best they should hope for is to drift away as a crippled wreck. But that would mean that the ship would have to be repaired and stuff before the next space battle, doesn't it?

Hyperion Cantos Question by D-Rahl867in scifi

[–]noorits 0 points1 point ago

I read it a long time ago, but from what I remember, the Hawking Drive was a generic FTL (now that I think about it, was it really ftl, or sublight?) contraption that was not elaborated on. Travel with a hawking drive resulted in time dilation - as the ship approached (and exceeded) the speed of light, the time for passengers slowed down, while the rest of the galaxy continued in the normal timestream. Once the ships dropped out of FTL, time again passed at the same rate, but the years that had elapsed in transit meant that compared to the travellers, the rest of the galaxy aged very rapidly.

I don't remeber anything particular about these Local and Standard times, but I assume they're tied to the official Hegemony time, with the Local being planet-specific.

A proposed law in Arizona could give employers the right to fire women who use birth control. The bill, which sailed right through the state’s Senate Judiciary Committee, grants employers the right to ask for proof that contraceptives are being taken for non-contraceptive reasons. by inkratin politics

USA, v. 2.0.1.3:

-fixed bug where female citizens could hide their contraceptive use

-improved the ability of job-creators to influence government

-opened social engineering model "Theocracy" for public betatesting

-started to deprecate the 2.0.0.1 Afghanistan patch. New patch, tentatively titled "2.0.1.x. Iran" in development

-proposed new workarounds for the well-known "Internet" glitch. Permanent solution still unavailable

-finished preliminary work on the "Health Care Antics!" and "Drug War" DLCs

What's A Movie Everyone Hated, But You Loved? by irishsandmanin AskReddit

I didn't really love them, but I found the two Dungeons and Dragons movies to be fun - bad acting, cliched script and terrible special effects notwithstanding.

UK Government shuts down the popular blog RnBXclusive which posted news, commentary, and links to music. Authorities have arrested the owners of the site for allegedly defrauding the music industry. They are threatening users with 10 years in prison if they downloaded music through the site. by mepperin technology

[–]noorits -1 points0 points ago

This may be irrelevant, but as far as I understand, the victim of file theft, which online sharing unquestionably is, should be the owner of the file. Does the warning verbatim then mean that all files that were available through RnBXclusive were the property of their respective artists?

Also, the suggested legal alternative seems rather meager.
