I don't normally agree with Iran, but in this case I think certain reality TV show hosts would benefit from such things.

You'd think so, but the opposite is in fact true, especially after knife scarring. Wood contains antibacterial agents. If you want filth, try looking up some research on kitchen towels.

My friend visited the US. He said New York was amazing (but too mad to live in), California seemed like a failed state and Oregon was amazing (said the folks were nice and there were some bad-ass tree houses).

That last thing you said rang bells. Made tears well up. I’m not exactly a councilor but I’ve got one thought. Sure, you’ve problems and I guess they need solving. One thing though…don’t you want to see cool stuff around the world? From your language, I’m guessing I live about 3,000k from you (UK/Iceland). Dealing with shit is…well, shit. But before you put an end to it, you have to check out some of the other cool things on offer. In the meantime, hugs are actually awesome. If your lass is draining you, demand them off other friends. Cry your eyes out and demand a bit of loving. When you’re really sad, it’s fine to do that. You'll be happily surprised. If not, then there's a place to stay over here for a while...

You're an idiot on a number of levels (I'm guessing you're either about 15, drunk or just stupid). Firstly...what's suing the queen got to do with anything? We weren't talking about that and I doubt she's done anything that deserves it. For the record though, it's been possible to sue the queen for civil issues for over 50 years and it was confirmed in the '90s by the House of Lords. If she did anything overtly criminal she'd forced to abdicate. She's only there because parliament and the people allow her to be. Now let me talk to the grown ups.

I’m an anti-monarchist, but even I have to admit that they’re so low key and cheap these days that there’s not much to complain about.

If you’re American, it might help to think of it like this…the queen to the UK is like the flag is to the USA. I suspect you spend more on your flags (both overall and per capita) than is spent on the queen in the UK (it’s about 62p per capita - £38m - per year). I’ve actually met someone who earned more than that in a year individually.

@ fragglemook – it’s sad that you honestly think she has any power. It’s all ceremonial. Do you seriously imagine our country would fall to bits if Black Rod was removed? Of course not, it’s all just for show. This has been proven in history several times (much like the recent stuff with the Lords). If they kicked up a fuss they’d be removed overnight.

I have a similar issue with brushing my teeth. It's not laziness (I was happy to argue with my family for several hours rather than brush them - I find the sensation horrible. If you ever had to wear really itchy clothes as a kid, that's what it feels like).

After essentially not brushing them for 14 years (just a few times a year), I had a conversation with a dentist who fixed the issue. I now fastidiously clean them with strips of cloth (not reused) and child's toothpaste - also flossing I don't mind. I can avoid the horrible sensation and my teeth end up waay cleaner than using the brush...it just takes a long time. The dentist (who was also a trained psychologist) said he'd met a lot of people who had the exact same problem. Weirdly, all my teeth are in great condition, probably because I don't like sugary foods?

If you knowingly make false statements about your opponent in an election in the UK, you risk the election being ruled void after you win. by otterplayin worldnews

You're missing the point. It's not that it's badly enforced but rather that lying about your opponent is considered very bad form (and I can't remember seeing it from any party), even if you just imply it (which I have seen a few times). A while back the conservatives had a poster where Blair had demon eyes: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/mar/25/m-c-saatchi-conservative-party

It went down so badly that a large number of conservatives themselves refused to vote for them for bringing bad taste into politics (my granny abstained that year because of it) . Trying to get around the laws by not explicitly stating something tends to end up with you being publicly humiliated in TV interviews. Interviewers like Paxman openly enjoy breaking down false logic on TV. You've also got to remember that a lot of people watch the BBC because they take a pride in the fact that they avoid instinctive or knee-jerk politics (interestingly, the BBC is often seen by the rightwing as a leftwing organisation, but when I had a nearly 2 hour chat with a prominent conservative, he said it was with them that he felt most comfortable but he couldn't put his finger on why (he was a bit drunk though). That said, we need stronger laws to hold elected politicians to account. He agreed. When I proposed jail-time for those who turned on (rather than failed on) election promises...he was a little hesitant.

Like with kids, I think positive reinforcement is the best approach to police. So here's a few experiences:

  1. After drinking a litre of Vodka, I passed out in the snow in someone's doorway in Iceland. I remember the cops chatting to me and me thinking I was in France (because their hats were similar). After going through my stuff and figuring out where I lived, they took me to my granny's house. She made me go down there the afterday to appologise. I had to ring her back and get one of the cops to confirm I'd done it. I was a little humiliated but they were really nice, so I felt good at the end.

  2. In England I was in a club that got raided. I was on E but only had dope on me. I shat my pants (almost) because the cops were hardcore and had dogs. I told him I was high and asked what he wanted me to do with my dope. He grinned and said he didn't mind about weed. Even after they left, I thought it was a trick and my heart was beating like mad. One of the bouncers (who looked a bit jumpy himself) said later that they would never take someone's weed because it would make the whole area kick off, and it's not worth it.

  3. I've read very good things about the Danish and Swedish police. Bill Bryson talks about them finding a drugged up teenager and asking what they're going to do with him. One of the cops says something along the lines of "We're going to take hime home. I think he needs his home. I'm sure he'll be in a lot of trouble with his parents".
