TROPHY CASE

Former high-school star Brian Banks does serious time on trumped-up charge, now hopes for an NFL shot | Shutdown Corner - Yahoo! Sports by mystinkyfingersin nfl

[–]nickiter 6 points7 points ago

Wow, what a horrible story. I literally just read about a similar story with a baseball player, Garrett Wittels. He was targeted by a pair of women who believed (on advice of a relative of one) that they could extort money from the man or resort by pretending to have been raped.

I suspect that stories like this are going to lead to a reformation of rape laws in the coming decade.

There is a socially constructed "breadwinner" role for men which probably has something to do with it, as well.

The disproportionalities are probably due to bias in both cases, but the bias against blacks is much better documented.

Edit: Or what recreational said.

"The Calories In/Calories Out Myth" - This Is Sad by finkicarein Fitness

[–]nickiter -3 points-2 points ago

Here's a study from Nature where number of calories does not predict weight gain. There are plenty more, just look for any sort of overfeeding studies.

Tom Naughton on what happens with a caloric surplus on low-carb by nickiterin keto

My rule has always been: if hungry, eat. So far, it has never impeded my weight loss or caused me to gain weight, as long as I continue to eat the right foods.

"The Calories In/Calories Out Myth" - This Is Sad by finkicarein Fitness

[–]nickiter 35 points36 points ago

Okay, I get why this is annoying to this particular community, and this blog states the case against ci/co about as badly as can be... but calories in/calories out doesn't hold up in experimental settings. Overfeeding studies consistently show that people fed too many calories don't gain a predictable amount of weight. Why is it so important to cling to this simplistic model - eat calories, burn calories - when it's not totally accurate and totally not useful for actual weight loss? For most people, "eat less and move more" is far from adequate to actually help them lose weight. They need to know what kinds of foods regulate their appetites, they need to know what kinds of exercise actually accomplish what kinds of goals... Whenever I see "it's calories in, calories out, and that's all," I feel like people are intentionally oversimplifying the issue as a way of belittling fat people. Of all places, this subreddit has to know how different the three macronutrients are from each other - obviously a diet of refined carbs and fats with little protein is vastly, overwhelmingly different from a diet heavy on protein. Why ignore all of that knowledge in favor of an axiom which is, at best, misleading?

I can only speak for today. My company's entire success over the past few years hinged on reaching emissions targets, and our competition's troubles hinged on their failure to do so. It's that big of a deal. I wouldn't argue if someone told me there was a campaign against it in the past, but if there was, it's over now at the corporate level.

I have no interest in going back to being fat, tired, and moody, which is what happens shortly after going back to a high carb diet for me. I eat as much as i want of amazing food and feel great... other than occasional cheat meals, i'm never going back.

School lunches are literally less nutritious than prison lunches. The standards are incredibly low because of how low the costs have to be.

It's not genetically engineered, per se, but it was hybridized using chemical hybridizing agents, which permit extreme genetic changes which are practically quite similar to more direct genetic modification.

Kayle. Stomps like crazy against teams that overextend and/or don't ward, and gets super fast after a couple of items. Great damage and solid utility through mid game, solid damage and great utility at late game.

I also love Master Yi, but you generally need to last-pick him to ensure the other team isn't CC-heavy.

If I do a quick first pass at a program, it might take me 100 instructions to do action X. Once I get better at programming, I can come back to that code and go, "Shit, I could have done X in 25 instructions." That's sort of the gist of it.

[–]nickiter 0 points1 point ago

Former diesel engineer here.

Myth: Engine/car companies are suppressing green technologies to protect their profits.

Reality: Every single engine and auto manufacturer spends huge amounts of money and manpower working on efficiency and emissions, but those problems are actually hard, particularly when you're trying to improve both at the same time. Meeting emissions standards on new products is a make-or-break goal for engine manufacturers, and some of them have been unable to make it in recent years, despite tons of investment.

And Garrett Wittels. The full story was in ESPN magazine... made my blood boil. The girls had no evidence whatsoever, lied about a dozen things that were easily disproved by surveillance cameras and eyewitness testimony, and had a family member who had publicly suggested the possibility of using false rape allegations to ruin public figures. Still cost Wittels at least the draft, if not more.
